The prison surrounded by fear
On an isolated island in the waters of San Francisco, California is the famous old prison called the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. This notorious prison, which goes by the name “The Rock,” is well-known because of its notorious inmates, rigid discipline, numerous acts of violence, and many failed attempts at escape. It is also known for some very scary ghost stories.
Despite the absence of any scientific proof, Alcatraz’s horrific history and creepy surroundings have gone a long way toward making it one of the most haunted places in America.
History of Alcatraz
The story of Alcatraz starts long before it turned into the federal prison. It was during the nineteenth century that the U.S. Military realized the strategic location of the island as it is situated at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The construction of the island's fortifications started in the 1850s, and later it turned into the military prison.
In 1934, the prison opened and started receiving its first convicts who were selected among the most challenging ones for imprisonment all over the country. For 29 years from then until its closing, more than 1,500 prisoners stayed in Alcatraz, such as gangster Al Capone, bank robber George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and criminal Robert Stroud.
The conditions for the prisoners there were very tough. They were supposed to follow many rules, had no privileges, and spent much time alone. Some of them were even kept in dark silent cells.
However, violence was not spared this place either. For example, the infamous “Battle of Alcatraz” took place in 1946 where there was an escape attempt that ended in a deadly fight between the inmates and the authorities. It was also in 1962 that three inmates escaped in one of the most complex plans.
In 1963, the prison had to be shut down due to the cost of maintaining and running it. However, the buildings still stand as they preserve the history of the inmates who used to call this place their home. Today, the island is managed by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Ghost Stories and Paranormal Accounts
Over the years, fans of ghosts have told many tales about happenings at the historic penitentiary. Even without any proof that these are true, these have definitely added to the haunted reputation of Alcatraz.
1. Voices and Sound
A few people have reported hearing cries, footsteps, whispers, and cell door movement in the absence of anyone close by. The concrete walls and iron structures of the prison may create some peculiar echo effects especially in a deserted place. Paranormalists consider these sounds as the manifestation of ghosts of prisoners who used to live there. There has been no concrete evidence proving these to be of any supernatural cause.
2. The Isolation Cells Haunted by Spirits
Among the scariest places on Alcatraz Island are the isolation cells. The prisoners in them faced many limitations and were separated from other people for a very long time.
According to common ghost stories, visitors to these places feel a sudden chill, uneasiness, or the presence of another person observing them. Sometimes people attribute these phenomena to spirits residing in the cells.
However, coldness, lack of light, the state of the building itself, and the effect of the environment can explain similar phenomena as well.
3. The Legend of Cell 14D
One of the most popular stories about Alcatraz prison is the story connected with Cell 14D, which is a solitary confinement cell. According to the paranormal legends, one of the prisoners died here because he saw a strange person with glowing eyes observing him.
It is said that the guards found him dead, bearing strange traces on his neck, and heard screams afterwards.
Even though this story is widely spread when talking about hauntings at Alcatraz, there are no solid historical facts about it.
4. Shadow People and Weird Feelings
Some of the other experiences that have been claimed include the sighting of shadow people in deserted hallways, feeling the presence of someone unknown, and being watched during exploration of the old cells.
The foggy conditions on the island along with the dark interior of the jail and its rich history of incarcerations make it very easy to instill fear. However, none of these claims have ever been proven with the help of any paranormal investigation.
Why Alcatraz is So Haunted
Not only are the ghosts that roam the halls of Alcatraz scary but the history of human pain and torture is what makes the prison so frightening.
While for some it is just the sight of the empty cells that hold such a memory, for others it is the island itself that inspires the tales of hauntings.
Is Alcatraz really haunted? No one can say for sure, since there is no scientific evidence that proves that ghosts exist. What we know for sure, however, is that it is the history of the place that makes it so frightening.
The most frightening thing about Alcatraz is perhaps not that it may be haunted but rather that people were imprisoned there.
