So I guess now that it's the Halloween season it's the perfect opportunity to stick on a few scary movies to watch as the cold dark nights draw in. I've got to say I don't actually need any excuses as I'm a self-confessed horror addict! But what the hell, I'll take it. So if you're looking for some hidden gems that'll leave you with a few sleepless nights then look no further than my 8 Halloween horror recommendations below but, I warn you, continue at your own peril…

Halloween 3: Season of the Witch

Star Tom Atkins Screams About This Movie

So you might already be familiar with the Halloween franchise, namely for its iconicly masked killer Michael Meyers. Well, how can I put this, he doesn't appear in this movie and it works all the better for that. Let me explain, This entry revolves around a conspiracy by an evil mask-making company that has a sinister agenda all set for a horrific climax on Halloween night. This film should have signalled the start of an anthology of Halloween flicks all with different storylines but the confusion surrounding how it fit the franchise has dogged the movie ever since its release. Don't let that stop you though, it has more than earned its cult status over the years and deserves a chance, It's fucking brilliant and no one can…STOP IT!!!

Trick r Treat

Beware Samhein

It's Halloween night and Trick r Treat follows 5 different tales of terror interwoven throughout this enthusiasticly-festive horror flick. Produced by Bryan Singer and having a pretty decent cast from Anna Paquin to Bryan Cox. The stories vary from killer on the loose to children coming back from the dead but the poster child Sam Hain has made this movie a cult favourite already and is definitely worth checking out. I can't believe it failed at the box office back in 2007, See it before the much rumoured sequel gets made. Unless your too scared that is?

INSIDIOUS

That Boy Aint Right

When a couples son lands in a coma, they find there home besieged by spirits and a dark demonic entity that want to lay claim to their boy's empty vessel. This modern-day haunted house movie has everything going for it, produced and directed by horror Maestro James Wan himself who's been behind most of the horror smash-hits of the last decade. A great cast and some decent scares, this has to be on every serious horror fans go-to list this Halloween.

The Houses October Built

Beware The ULTIMATE Horror Haunt

A set of documentary filmmakers set about visiting every festive haunted maze or spooky house experience they can. As they try to find the scariest most intense experience they can, they find a place that just might be the real thing. I've got to say I bloody love! Found footage movies and this one is a fantastic example of what can be done right within this often overlooked sub-genre. A low budget independent effort with inexperienced actors makes this a visceral raw film and you might start to believe what your watching is actually real. See it asap and follow it up with the sequel if you can find it online.

Ready or Not

You Can Run But...Well, Just Run

A new bride celebrates her wedding at her husband's luxury estate where she's invited to play a little game of ready or not. Unfortunately, the stakes are life and death and she must survive until sunrise to be allowed to leave the property alive. This movie is an absolute treat, walking a fine line between horror and comedy which makes for many a scream of laughter throughout. There's tons of memorable on-screen deaths and gore by the bucket load. The filmmakers have managed to craft a truly unique and fun movie that bleeds uber-cool and has landed them at the helm of Scream 5 as a result. I really don't want to say much more so just go fire up your Netflix account and watch it before it's too late.

WNUF: HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

Live Horror Straight From The Past!

Set on Halloween night, a news reporter and his team attempt a live broadcast in a haunted house with deadly consequences. This is a truly unique movie as it plays like a tv broadcast viewed from an old VHS tape with corny ad breaks and the frequent tracking and fast-forwarding issues the format had. It truly captures the feel of the season and the 80s but, I have to warn you, does gets a little repetitive by the second half. Worth having on in the background to get you into the mood for something with a little more bite. Go stream it on shudder today folks.

V/H/S 2

Blank Video Scares A Plenty

Another anthology horror movie for this list, this one has 4 tales that are shown via a stack of old VHS tapes found under mysterious circumstances. While I enjoyed the first movie in this franchise, this sequel dials it up a notch in the adrenaline department and if you don't like 1 story the next one will grab you with both hands. The stand out segment for me has to be a go-pro filmed zombie apocalypse story happening in real time. Pick this one up and you'll surely binge the sequels and then have to wait with the rest of us for the eagerly awaited next instalment entitled V/H/S/94.

Trick or Treat

Rocking Horror Tunes

This one is bat-shit crazy and deserves to be seen at least once in your lifetime. A bullied metal obsessed teen gets his hands on a mysterious record from a late rockstar and when played it releases his spirit who goes on a murderous rampage. This one has all the charm and cheese you'd expect from a mid-80s horror movie and even has cheeky cameos by metal legends Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne. Worth a watch and I'm pretty sure you can find it on youtube in its original grungy Video format as it was probably meant to be seen.
