I tucked my son into bed and closed his closet door, reassuring him there were no monsters inside. As I turned off the light, I heard a whisper from the closet say, “But he’s lying.”
I was about to drift off to sleep when I felt a warm breath on my neck. I live alone.
My phone buzzed with a text from Mom: "Come downstairs, dinner's ready!" But she had died ten years ago, and the message was sent from her old number.
I kissed my wife goodnight and turned over in bed. As I closed my eyes, I heard her voice from the doorway: "Who were you just talking to?"
I checked the baby monitor after hearing soft giggles from the nursery. The crib was empty, but the camera showed a pair of glowing eyes staring back at me.
Every night, I hear my dog scratching at the bedroom door, begging to be let in. The only problem is… I buried him last year.
I woke up to my husband gently stroking my hair. He died in a car accident six months ago.
A stranger’s reflection blinked at me from my bathroom mirror. I hadn’t blinked yet.
The attic door creaked open on its own, revealing a dusty staircase leading up. I don’t have an attic.
As I whispered, “I wish I had a friend,” into the empty darkness, something whispered back, “Me too.”
