In 1929 during the depths of the Great Depression, a young and innocent boy named Tommy found himself residing in a makeshift neighborhood that was constructed entirely out of cardboard. This unique community, nestled by the serene edge of the river, served as a humble abode for families who were grappling with the harsh realities of poverty and struggling to make ends meet.

In this desolate and challenging environment, Tommy discovered solace and companionship in the form of his best friend, Jimmy. Both ten years old, they shared a common dream of a brighter future, a future that held the promise of escaping the clutches of destitution and embracing a life filled with hope and prosperity. Their friendship was a source of strength and support, as they navigated the hardships of their daily lives together.

However, fate took an unexpected turn one fateful night when temptation gripped Jimmy’s heart, leading him to commit a regrettable act. Driven by a momentary lapse in judgment, Jimmy succumbed to the allure of stealing a quarter from his father’s meager earnings. Overwhelmed by guilt and fear of the consequences, Jimmy made the ill-fated decision to shift the blame onto another child within the cardboard city, hoping to escape the wrath of his actions.

As news of the stolen quarter spread like wildfire throughout the community, the inhabitants of the cardboard city were consumed by a fiery rage. Fuelled by their own frustrations and the hardships they endured on a daily basis, they yearned for justice to be served in the face of this theft. The sense of betrayal was palpable, as they grappled with the idea that one of their own had committed such an act.

In a collective outpouring of anger and resentment, the residents formed a tight circle around the accused child, their eyes filled with a mixture of fury and desperation. Their emotions were raw and intense, as they sought to find an outlet for their pent-up frustrations. The weight of their collective anger bore down on the young soul who stood at the center of their wrath, as they sought to make an example out of the accused child.

With each passing moment, the tension in the air grew palpable, as the crowd’s anger reached its boiling point. Stones were picked up, clenched tightly in their hands, ready to be hurled towards the innocent child who had been wrongfully accused. The night air became a haunting symphony of anguished cries, as the weight of the crowd’s fury threatened to consume them all.

Tragically, the life of this innocent child was abruptly cut short, snuffed out by the vengeful hands of those who had lost everything. The once vibrant and hopeful cardboard city had now transformed into a place shrouded in darkness and despair, forever marred by the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful night. The loss of innocence and the devastating consequences of unchecked anger were etched into the very fabric of the community.

A few dreadful nights for Jimmy had passed, his heart filled with grief. Thinking of his actions and the blame he had placed onto his best friend. This cold and dark night was not like any other. The moon was bright and the people were all gathered inside of their cardboard structures. Some would burn a fire made with a can, trying to attempt some warmth.

As Jimmy huddled up next to his father, a small child's voice could be hear outside calling his name. In curiosity young Jimmy crawls out from his small dwelling to take a look. He carefully walks to where this voice of a small child was coming from. Down by the river was Tommy holding out his cold wet hand for Jimmy.

Two small bodies they say could be seen floating down the moon lite river that night.
