There are more haunted places on earth than anyone can count. The most famous ones tend to be the locations of gruesome deaths or murders, but there are some very creepy spots out there that don't have a violent background. The Winchester Mystery House is a famous California house that was under construction from 1884 until her death in 1922. Sarah Winchester, the heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune, had psychic visions that told her she was being haunted by the souls of people killed by Winchester rifles.

Sarah believed that the only way to appease these restless spirits was to build a house for them—a house big enough to keep them busy for all time. To make sure that she didn’t die before it was finished, Sarah also built-in lots of secret staircases and doors—so she could continue to live in the house while.

Poveglia Island

Poveglia is an island located in the Venetian Lagoon, between Venice and Lido. It is also called Tomb Island or Plague Island.

During World War II, the island became a place for dragging victims of the plague to die away from populated areas. In addition, Poveglia was a quarantine center for people with infectious diseases, including leprosy and typhus.
