Because why be bored when you can be scared instead?

The nation has, for the most part, been put under house arrest. The weather is getting better and I'm sure a lot of you would rather be making the most of the new sunshine by socialising out and about with your pals or sunbathing, or basically doing anything other than staying inside watching the sun tease you through the window (aside from my misanthropic, autumn/winter bunnies. I feel you).

If lockdown is getting you down and you don't know what to do with yourself I have the perfect solution. Use this time to binge watch the best in horror that Netflix has to offer. It might just scare you to the point of never wanting to leave the house again, which might actually be beneficial at present.

10. IT (2017)

The first half of Andy Muschietti's movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same title is on Netflix for your viewing pleasure (or terror). Bill Skarsgård plays the title character and does an excellent job. It is not hard to make a clown scary being one of the most common phobias that people have, but Skarsgård takes it to another level. Not to say that Tim Curry's performance in the 90's miniseries wasn't just as frightening, but the two portrayals of the character as so different. Definitely worth a watch and might help you overcome your coulrophobia...or make it ten times worst. There is only one way to find out!

9. Sinister (2012)

In Sinister a true crime writer moves his family into a home where horrific crimes took place, all for inspiration and information for his new project. His loved ones are blissfully unaware of the gruesome history of their new home but dark things start happening when the writer finds tapes of the horrific events that took place there.

8. Malevolent (2018)

Some fake paranormal investigators who are used to cashing in on their theatrical lies receive the biggest reality check of their lives when they are hired to investigate on old orphanage. The group learn the awful history of the place and start to question their beliefs around the paranormal as they come across strange and unexplained sounds and sights at the home. It turns out that these supernatural spooks are only the beginning.

7. Verónica (2017)

This Spanish horror flick got a lot of hype when it was released being called the scariest horror film ever with claims that people had even passed out while watching it. Let me manage expectations a little here: Verónica is not that scary. Not to say that it is not worth a watch because it is, but you will be a lot more impressed with it if you don't go into it with the mindset that it is going to frighten you into a coma. The movie follows a girl that becomes the victim of supernatural forces after messing with a Ouija board.

6. The Platform (2019)

The platform has received a lot of attention since first appearing on the streaming service and given the unique story it is understandable why. The movie is set in a vertical prison where there is one cell on each level, and each cell contains two inmates. There is enough food to feed everyone in the facility equal portions at the top, but it is fed down through each pair and it is up to them to decide how much they eat and how much they leave for the people below them. On a monthly basis each platform is moved to a different level and inmates can only but hope that they end up somewhere closer to the top, away from the carnage that ensues on lower levels. The Platform is a bleak and interesting watch that will fill you with a deep sense of foreboding, but since you're probably feeling that way anyway you might as well watch it!

5. The Perfection (2018)

Another one here that is a little different from your typical horror story filled with supernatural jump scares. The Perfection is about a musical prodigy who seeks out the new star pupil of her old school. This ends up leading the two girls on a sinister journey. The movie has a couple of good twists and a dark underlying theme.

4. Shutter Island (2010)

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead, this movie may be more of a thriller than a full-blown horror but it is still one of the most unsettling and creepy movies I have even seen and it contains one of the best on-screen twists I have ever seen. If somehow this movie has passed you by waste no more time and watch it right now. Although it may be a commitment as it clocks in at over two hours long don't let that put you off. Shutter Island is worth every minute of screen time. This is a movie that will stick with you long after the credits start to roll.

3. Orphan (2009)

Another one here with a shocking plot twist. A couple adopt a 9-year old girl named Esther who initially appears to be a unique but sweet young girl. It quickly becomes apparent that there is something amiss about the girl and her new mother becomes suspicious and starts to investigate Esther's troubled past. It turns out that Esther has a big secret and it not at all what she appears to be. Orphan is well worth a watch for the absurdity of the twist.

2. Quarantine (2008)

One here that is in-keeping with current events, Quarantine follows a news reporter and her cameraman as they are stuck inside a building that is under quarantine. This is because of the outbreak of a previously unknown virus that seems to turn the infected into brutal killers.

1. Gerald's Game (2017)

Another adaptation from the master of horror himself, Stephen King. Gerald's Game follows the story of a couple that have lost the passion in their relationship. In an attempt to reignite the flame between them they travel to a secluded lake house for some quality time together. While there, Gerald handcuffs his wife to the bed frame to spice things up a bit and then he unexpectedly dies. She must now attempt to free herself, both from the handcuffs and from the demons that haunt her mind.
