Zack Snyder Shares Expectations For Future Beyond His Cut Of 'Justice League' And Talks A Little Lex Luthor

The recent DC FanDome event was probably one of the most massive events for comic book movies, especially during this pandemic, which has been feeling like forever. DC FanDome conquered every comic book-related corner via reveals from DC Entertainment, including teaser trailers for The Batman starring the menacing Robert Pattinson and the Snyder Cut of Justice League, as well as revealing the new title for the sequel to 2019’s hit film Shazam! Starring Zachary Levi, who, along with Asher Angel, is back as the titular character whose civilian identity is Billy Batson.

Fans gave the most excited reactions, and some (but not all) were very hyped by the new glimpse at the vision presented by director Zack Snyder, who had signed on to direct multiple DC Extended Universe films almost a decade ago starting with 2013's Man of Steel. Throughout the recent madness of the DC FanDome event, Zack Snyder revealed more in-depth information regarding his highly anticipated upcoming director’s cut, while also addressing the possibility of potential future sequel installment in the vein of what he has done.

On his special guest appearance on The Reel in Motion Roundtable on YouTube, the Justice League director not only discussed his own frame of mind regarding this highly anticipated director’s cut that many of the fans have been eager to see since the theatrical release, but also acknowledged his thoughts on whether or not a sequel to the Snyder Cut is in the cards.

“When I made the movie, the design of the movie, I always thought we would do this movie and I’d be setting up a bunch of stuff for what would come after it. It is what it is… I’m not expecting… I don’t know what is going to happen, but my expectations are not, ‘Oh, Warner Bros. is going to ask me to make another movie.”

Regarding the original intent of 2017’s Justice League, Snyder also teased the future of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, which has more to offer and has not materialized since the film's debut.

“There is a whole Lex Luthor concept I had that would unfold over a longer narrative trajectory. I don’t know, we will see.”

The comment about Lex Luthor is very interesting, considering Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as the iconic DC villain earned mixed reviews. Some found him to be more strange than threatening. His appearance in the post-credit scene of Justice League feels out of place at the moment, given that this version of the character has not resurfaced or been announced for any other upcoming film since then. It is still a mystery whether or not this portrayal and the intended path will continue to unfold in the future DCEU films. Some fans do want to see more depth to the story of Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor in the future DCEU films.

Snyder does not hold anything back regarding how proud he is of the work that he has dibe for his version of the DCEU team-up movie. Although there is ongoing criticism, he is still open to coming back for more films in the future. Snyder clearly has a great deal of pride on all the works that he has done for the franchise over the years. He helmed both 2013’s Man of Steel and 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which both also starred Henry Cavill, and he also served as a writer and producer on the successful 2017 Wonder Woman film, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine.

Snyder's Cut of Justice League will be released in four one-hour parts on HBO Max sometime in 2021.
