Whenever a new Batman is cast, there tends to be a sect of fandom that feels skeptical about the new actor in the role. This goes way back to the casting of comedic actor Michael Keaton for the titular role in the 1989 film simply titled Batman. Lo and behold, Keaton now tends to be a fan favorite for many, with some even clamoring for him to return in a possible live-action Batman Beyond.

More recently, there have been many fans skeptical about the casting of Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves' film The Batman, which will likely be separate from the DC Extended Universe films. Known for his role as vampire Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, fans have joked about how a "sparkling vampire" might not live up to the Batman mantle. However, other fans have been quick to point out how history repeats itself when it comes to overreactions to casting announcements that work very well in the long run.

Zack Snyder, director of the divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is no stranger to seeing such fan reactions. When Ben Affleck was cast as Batman for that DCEU film, lots of fans were skeptical. While the film itself proved to be controversial, partially due how Batman was so open to killing people this late in his career as a crimefighter, some fans have come around and even claimed that Ben Affleck is their favorite Batman.

In an exclusive interview with Grace Randolph on the Beyond The Trailer YouTube channel, Snyder shared his thoughts on The Batman. Commenting on the new direction for the character, Snyder said, "I'm super excited about that, by the way." He expressed his belief that Reeves is "an amazing filmmaker," and that "Robert's cool."

For the fans who are loyal to Snyder's take on the DC characters, these comments may be enough for them to accept Robert Pattinson's Batman. Essentially, Snyder is giving his blessings regarding the whole situation, being a good sport despite the shift in direction for the Batman character. Then again, fans are capable of reserving judgment until they see the finished product, of course.

Perhaps it is easier for Snyder to be a good sport about all this now that he is being given the chance to show the world his cut of the DCEU's Justice League, which is set to be released on HBO Max sometime in 2021. There is a lot of enthusiasm from fans of Snyder, and really, multiple DC projects from different creators and different actors should be co-existing peacefully. This is how things have been, what with the various DC comic books, animated shows, and live-action shows that take place in different continuities. Fans will see more of Affleck's Batman in Snyder's edit, and they will also get to see a fresh interpretation from Reeves and Pattinson.

According to recent reports, the goal is to have The Batman back in production in September, with the film's release date currently slated to be October 1, 2021, having been pushed back from the original June 25, 2021 release date. The film is said to be a more noir take on the Caped Crusader, focusing more on the detective aspect of the character. This will be the first live-action Batman solo film since 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, and it may be interesting to see a different interpretation with a potentially smaller scale plot. The debate over Batman actors will continue, but there are sure to be fans who will want to flock to The Batman just to see the legendary hero in action regardless of the portrayal.
