You Should be Watching The Owl House

One of the most enjoyable animated shows you'll ever see

Who doesn’t want to watch a fun cartoon? I’m a huge fan of animation in all forms, usually anime. So, when I was recommended this cartoon on Disney, I wasn’t sure if I’d actually like it. Luckily for me, I fell in love almost immediately. The Owl House is an adorable, heartfelt, and exciting show on Disney+, and it’s one you can enjoy no matter how old you are.

The show focuses on Luz, a young teen, who stumbles onto a portal to the magical world of the Boiling Isles. A super imaginative and creative girl, Luz wants to learn magic and become a witch herself in her adventures on the Isle. On the journey with her is Eda the Owl Lady, a powerful fugitive witch with a wild and offbeat personality, and King, the adorable mini demon. Along with some other friends and love interests, the story is all about Luz’s growth as a witch, as well as some more conflicts that I don’t want to spoil here.

The Owl House is such a playful and enjoyable show. One of its strongest points is the characters. The main trio are a diverse and interesting group, learning from each other, growing closer, and giving the audience plenty of memorable moments that will stick long after you’ve finished watching. King always makes for some adorable shenanigans as well as having some hard-hitting emotional arcs as well. In particular, the relationship between Luz and Eda is by far my favorite. I love Eda’s wild and rebellious nature, and the way she grows to love Luz throughout the season genuinely brought me to tears in some places.

Luz is also one of the most fun protagonists out there. She’s sweet, stands up for what she believes in, and has all the wide-eyes enthusiasm you’d expect from such an imaginative person. I adore her. Her interactions with every character are always rewarding. The arc she goes through with Amity Blight, another witch student her age, is one of the best parts of the show. Luz is someone you want to follow and cheer on, and she’ll effortlessly carry you through the series.

To say too much about Eda and King’s backstory would spoil the fun of the plot, so I won’t. There are curses and long lost parents, estranged siblings, etc. What I will say is that it strikes a great balance of being appropriate for people of all ages. You can take it seriously, but it’s nothing so overwhelmingly heavy that makes this more of an “adult” cartoon. I think it’s a great thing. Older audiences get to enjoy a well told story, while younger viewers can learn some valuable lessons about life and the people around them. The show tackles being different and having a sense of belonging, and all sorts of interpersonal tensions in a way that’s relatable and powerful. I enjoyed watching characters who seemed one way at first turn out to be completely different by the time we got to the finale.

What’s even better, the second season started airing in June 2021, with a new episode coming out every Saturday. At the time of this review, about four episodes have come out, and each of them has all the trademarks of the show. The characters are quirky and funny, but they have intense emotional moments that will deeply affect you. Not to mention, episode four has already given an insane twist that I certainly never saw coming. It’s really a wonderful and charming show, and it won’t take long to get hooked. So take a look at this fantastic show on Disney+. The Owl House is open to all.
