Wolf Pack Review: "Incendiary"

A huge swerve takes over Episode 5, and leaves viewers with many questions

Ooh boy! I've had a lot of excitement on TV in so little time! After watching the latest episode of The Flash, I tuned in to the final moments of the Blackhawks/Stars game, and almost saw a game-tying buzzer-beater from Dallas. A couple of hours later, I went to Paramount+ to watch the latest episode of Wolf Pack, because it's Episode 5, kicking off the second half of the season. I had been waiting for this; Episode 4 began the twists and turns for this season, and I figured that Episode 5 would continue to deliver.

Oh boy, did it deliver!

So after a flashback of Everett helping Harlan perfect his hearing skills, we see the quartet at the house, where they come to a conclusion about the prowling werewolf. The werewolf apparently targets those who plague the group, hence why the creature killed Miller. The beast went after Danny because he struck Blake, and it's at this moment that they get a phone call. Lo and behold, it's that same mystery caller, who recites some poetry before hanging up. According to Luna, the poetry is a bit of Greek mythology; a tale of Lycaon, the king of Arcadia. There are many versions, but the one Luna tells is that Lycaon murdered a child (his son, according to some versions) and fed him to Zeus to test his all-knowing abilities. Upon finding out, Zeus used his power to turn the villainous Lycaon into a wolf; making him the first werewolf and the centerpiece of the current term, "Lycanthrope."

The caller later sends the group to a destination where the werewolf would strike, which led them to a car accident and a nurse pleading for help, but they would fall short of saving her. Meanwhile, Garrett and Kristin's arson investigation leads them to a student named Cyrus Nix, with the interrogation revealing that Cyrus' father died in a fire 17 years prior. The group later receives another destination: the home of Tia Patterson, where a party is being thrown. Upon arrival, they find a roadblock in the form of Phoebe, but Harlan has the golden ticket: mushrooms.

After Cyrus mentions an abandoned construction site, the investigation heads there, where Kristin grills a woman regarding her past as a "radical" environmentalist. She later turns her attention to Garrett, asking him about the twins and if the death of Cyrus' father is connected. All Garrett said was that the twins were abandoned before he found them and took them in, and as for Kristin, she reveals that her son died in a fire.

A number of developments occur at Tia's party. We see Austin and Luna grow closer thanks to the former's piano playing, but more importantly, Everett and Blake finally kiss, something I had been rooting for this whole series. In addition, we see Phoebe get humiliated, which she has coming, by the way. However, Blake (of all people) puts the kibosh on the comeuppance by tossing Austin's phone in the pool. I'm honestly not mad at Blake for coming to Phoebe's defense, as it shows that Blake is definitely the bigger person in this whole scenario.

Austin dives in to get his phone, and it's at this moment that he encounters the big bad werewolf and leaps out of the pool. Meanwhile, the investigation reveals that someone set the fire from that very site, but after a warrant is made, Kristin decides to do some further investigating, with only a security guard accompanying her. We see the pair head towards the pit of bodies we saw in Episode 4, and when the guard asks what killed those people, Kristin says..."a werewolf." So she knows after all. It gets crazier. After giving her description ("an incredibly powerful supernatural predator"), Kristin suddenly turned heel on the guard; bludgeoning him with her flashlight and killing him! Wowza!

Kristin Ramsey turned heel in Episode 5's final moments

In the brief time that has passed since I watched this episode, my brain has been working double overtime in the Stanley Cup Playoffs...and it's nowhere near April! Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn't kidding. She promised big twists by the season's halfway point, and boy, did she come through! I also predicted a heel turn from Kristin Ramsey, and again, boy, did she come through. She's clearly connected to the werewolf, but how? I still say she's one herself, maybe not the one I thought she was, but even so. A theory I read is that Kristin could be Harlan and Luna's actual mother, and if that's the case, then I foresee a lot of chaos from this (potential) villainess.

The group keeps saying that the werewolf could be protecting them, but the method is very sinister. So yeah, the werewolf's no good, and Kristin Ramsey's definitely up to no good. Episode 5, "Incendiary," hit Paramount+ on February 23, 2023. Episode 6 can't get here soon enough. SMG's last statement still stays with me: "In Eight, you'll get the me you came to see." Even with that twist, that could mean so much. Hopefully, Episode 6 will give us some of the depths of Kristin Ramsey's heel turn, but for now, I will patiently wait for next week's episode by watching that good ol' hockey game to make it much easier.
