The legendary, ultra-prolific, direct-to-video horror saga is back. Officially keeping its crown as the longest-running continuous horror franchise in history, the series is cooking up its eighteenth installment: Witchcraft 18: The Lanterne of Light.

Produced by Deathstalker Productions alongside series mainstays Vista Street and Sterling Entertainment, this upcoming film is aiming to breathe fresh, terrifying new energy into the cult-classic supernatural saga.

While the Witchcraft franchise is historically famous for its campy, overly complex occult lore, late-night cable aesthetics, and the enduring battles of good warlock William Spanner, Witchcraft 18 is taking a hard creative turn.

Director Carissa Pierson has revealed that this horror film will be a found-footage movie, designed to reintroduce the series with a much more grounded, atmospheric, and genuinely unsettling tone.

The story will be about a paranormal investigation team ventures into the wilderness to document the legend of The Children of the Hollow, a sinister pagan cult rooted in local folklore. As the team pushes deeper into the woods searching for answers, their investigation spirals into increasingly dangerous, occult territory.

The film is dedicated to the memory of Jerry Feifer, the founder of Vista Street Entertainment and the creative force behind the Witchcraft franchise, who passed away on September 20, 2025. The producers have stated their intention to carry Feifer's legacy forward by blending the dark, supernatural tone of the original films with a modern vision. Initial shooting took place in North Carolina in January 2026, with main production scheduled for October 2026.

Witchcraft 18: The Lanterne of Light is an ambitious film that aims to reinvent the long-running franchise by combining occult mythology, psychological dread, and an immersive live-broadcast format.

Inspiration

The origin of William Spanner's cursed bloodline is that he is the descendant of evil witches and warlocks who want to bring about the end of the world. This heritage is central to his character, as he is a powerful warlock who fights for good despite having an inherently dark lineage.

He resists this heritage, preferring a normal life, but events conspire to force him to use his powers, often with the fate of the world at stake. The upcoming film aims to expand this mythos by exploring William Spanner's cursed bloodline and his unceasing battle against malevolent forces.

The film's story centers on a cursed lantern connected to an ancient cult known as The Children of the Hollow, which is described as a pagan cult rooted in North Carolina folklore. The lantern is said to demand blood to stay lit, and the cult's rituals are inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins. While the cult and its practices draw on general occult and pagan themes, the lantern appears to be an original narrative device created for this installment of the franchise.

The film aims to reinvent the mythology for a new generation while digging deeper into the occult history behind the cursed lantern at the center of the story, but no real-world folklore or historical artifact is mentioned.

The cursed lantern in Witchcraft 18: The Lanterne of Light demands blood to stay lit as part of the film's original occult mythology. The lantern is tied to an ancient cult known as The Children of the Hollow, a pagan cult rooted in North Carolina folklore. The cult's rituals are inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins, and the lantern itself is a central artifact that requires blood sacrifice to remain active.

The film's narrative suggests that the lantern is not merely a passive object but an active force that demands its final sacrifice. As the paranormal investigation crew uncovers the cult's rituals, their search turns deadly when the lantern's need for blood becomes a central threat. This concept aligns with the film's broader themes of ritual sacrifice, deteriorating sanity, and blood-soaked ceremonies.

While the filmmakers have not explicitly detailed the in-universe mechanics of why the lantern requires blood, the available information indicates that it is a cursed artifact with a will of its own, sustained by the blood of its victims as part of the cult's dark practices.
