Why Ruby Rose Left Batwoman

The former lead star of the CW series came forward regarding her surprising departure after just one season

Ruby Rose debuted as Kate Kane/Batwoman in December 2018

I'm a big fan of Ruby Rose; I've seen her in quite a few things. I loved her appearance on SyFy Channel's series, Dark Matter, as evil cyborg Wendy, and she also appeared in John Wick 2. When I learned that Rose would be playing the role of Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, on The CW's Arrowverse shows, I was all in! The Australian actress actually debuted as Batwoman before her self-titled series actually premiered; her first appearance as the Caped Crusader came in "Elseworlds," 2018's muti-show Arrowverse crossover. The crossover aired in December of 2018, and it was in the fall of 2019 that the Batwoman series premiered. Rose's Batwoman also appeared in the epic 2019 crossover, "Crisis on Infinite Earths," and other than Batwoman, fellow Arrowverse shows Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow were involved.

To no surprise, I truly enjoyed watching Ruby Rose as Batwoman on the series by the same title. However, as Season One ended, we were hit with a big surprise: Rose was leaving the series. A lead star leaving their series is a huge shocker, and one has to believe that their has to be a reason. Boy, is there!

So Rose went on social media and gave all of the details of her departure. First off, she didn't "quit," as was publicly stated, she was forced out because she basically refused to play their game. The game included not taking time off to heal bad injuries she suffered on set; I remember reading about Rose's injuries, too, just awful. It's a myriad of issues; Rose stated that Peter Roth, the chairman of WBTV, hired a private investigator to follow her regarding the aforementioned injuries, and then adding that she was forced to return to work just after surgery--which was to fix a pair of herniated discs. This was clearly part of the unsafe work environment that Rose said she was in, which also included a terrible on-set accident that left Amanda Smith, a production assistant, paralyzed at age 30! Rose also stated that showrunner Caroline Dries lied about how Rose got injured, with Dries stating that Rose got hurt doing yoga (Rose doesn't do yoga).

Dougray Scott played Jacob Kane for the show's first two seasons

In addition, Rose stated that her co-star, Dougray Scott (who played Kate's father, Jacob Kane), was abusive to women on set, claiming that Scott hurt a female stunt double and yelled at women on more than one occasion. Regarding the other stuff, I wouldn't be shocked if it's all true; I've heard all sorts of horror stories about what goes on when shows are filmed; in fact, this whole thing reminds me of the MacGyver controversy, and the statements made by series star Lucas Till about showrunner Peter M. Lenkov's conduct. Regarding the stuff about Scott, honestly, I 100% believe it, and here's why. I have, to be honest, never liked Jacob Kane. I always saw the character as a self-righteous person who was set in his ways and thought his way was always right. I was behind on Batwoman as late as three days before the Season Three premiere, so I played catch-up, of course. The more I watched Jacob during those days, the less I liked him. Scott left the series after two seasons.

Wallis Day as Kate Kane during Season 2

The second season premiered on January 17, 2021 with Javicia Leslie taking the lead as the new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder. As for Kate, she was originally written off during the season opener when her plane crashed, and it was believed that she was killed off. As revealed in episode 2.08, Kate was very much alive, but badly disfigured and held captive by the season's Big Bad, Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask. With the help of Enigma (aka hypnotherapist Evelyn Rhyme), Black Mask, manages to take out any memories of Kate Kane and convince her that she was Roman's late daughter, Circe Sionis. So with that, Kate actually returned as a villainess (albeit altered), and continued to be portrayed as a heel character until the final moments of the season finale. Kate was portrayed by British actress Wallis Day for seven episodes during Season 2.

Of course, Rose's statements are met with denial from those she mentioned. WBTV heads are accusing Rose of "revisionist history," while Dougray Scott is also denying everything. Yeah, this thing's far from over.
