Why Michael Scott is the Anchor of The Office
And why he is the goat
Michael was the anchor of the Office. It was literally structured around him and him finding love and getting to have a family he so desperately craved. He befriended Packer, a toxic and horrible man, made more apparent by sleeping with both women they met in a bar, You could see the pain in Michael's eyes when recalling this. He was also the dumb and the bigot but he was also shown to be quite the salesman and often showed why he was the boss.
Comedy is a unique genre because we put in qualities to laugh at but also to empathize with. Michael is a lonely human being and grows along the way and wants to belong and tries to make his work family a surrogate family. He wants to be seen as an expert when he often puts his foot in his mouth.
We also have the whole will they won't they with Jim and Pam. That ended around Season four and we ended that part of the journey and when Michael found love and left the shoe the last two seasons were just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck. It was aimless and wreckless and pointless. They broke up Erin and Andy and lost any hope of giving two shits once Michael left.
The writing was worse and desperate and just trashier than had been prior. There were low hanging fruit jokes AND CHARACTERS ACTING UNBELIEVABLY AND IT WAS just desperate and boring and idiotic. The Office was one of those shows that you had to be somewhat intelligent to enjoy. You also had to be someone that was patient. Someone like my mom would get too easily upset with the actions of the characters and write off a Dwight or a Michael Scott too easily before appreciating the humanity beneath.
To me the idiotic and selfish bullshit, like the senator and Angela shit was more trashy bullshit that was meant to entertain you more than ha ha Angela has a gay husband. Her soul mate was Dwight and everything else was just a liberal bunch of atheists hating on all conservative Christians. Michael Scott really started to get respect from his employees during the Chilli's episode during the first Dundy's award.
When that asshole was picking on Michael the group rallies behind him. Michael Scott was by far the funniest character and made the show what it was. Steve Carrel was not afraid to look like a doofus and be vulnearble. He could play the audience like an organ. Now Jim and Pam also carried plenty of things, serving as our emotional core but seeing Jim and Michael during their final scene where Jim confesses Michael was the best boss he ever had.
When Pam and Michael hugged before leaving was an emotional and tear-jerking scene. Michael just made the show better when he was onscreen. On the Office olympic's episode the more interesting place would be wherever Michael went that day, I believwe he went with Dwight to see the condo that day.
Michael Scott was literally the one that they structured the show around. It was dealing with him. The coworkers would either team up against Michael or endure together.
None of the other bosses had Michael's charisma and we were not invested in them as characters. We did not know them on a deeper level like we did with Michael. He was our main focus and raised the biggest question ont he show. Will Michael get married and have kids? And when he dumps Packer for Holly it is the best part of having to endure Packer.
