Why I actually enjoyed Julie and the Phantoms

The show that impressed me

“Tell your friends!”

I grew up in the era of Big Time Rush and The Jonas Brothers, this show actually brought me back to why I loved shows of the same category. True this show did have me cringing at some points, it’s still a very solid premise and premiered its idea tremendously.

What’s the Show About

This show picks up with a boy band trying to make it huge in Hollywood in 1995 that consists of Luke (singer), Alex(drummer), Reggie(bass), and Trevor(other guitarist). As three of the four band mates go to get food, while not even two hours before they play live at the Orpheum, they die due to the hotdogs they ingest. Trevor is the only one to survive due to being a vegetarian.

Twenty-five years later we meet Julie, a girl who is still hung over the loss of her mother. Given the musical gift her mother had, she is too upset to even play infront of her class at school. Her best friend Flynn tries to help her out of her funk, but Julie is the only one that can push herself out into the light. As her father tells her to clean her mothers stuff, Julie finds a CD of a band named Sunset Curve. Unbeknownst to her, three boys pop up right in front of her out of nowhere.

Why I Think This Show is Amazing

Most comedy shows do end up becoming too cheesy and ridiculous to follow as the show progresses. This one, in my opinion, brought so much more to the table. The boys think about what’s left for them, what they regret, how to move on. They do have the boys become visible when they are in a band with Julie, and that’s what makes it so much more incredible. They play it off like they are some holograms from another country, and it’s actually a plausible excuse since technology is at its prime right now.

They also show the hardships of being dead and what death means to them. Luke visits his parents that he ditched for the band, Reggies house becomes a bike shop and never approved of his desires, and Alex just came out to everyone that he was gay. (Side note, I think it’s amazing how they accept their friend. LGBTQ has come a long way.) Julie still wears her mother’s clothes as her personal sign of keep moving forward.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but one thing that was interesting is that the boys fourth band mate actually is the father of Julies rival. It’s almost like he was destined of being on the other side of things. And Julies rival, Carrie, has her own band that’s pop. It’s almost like a clash between rock and pop mixed into this one show!

Why I Can’t Wait To See More

This show is filled with relationships that you want to see more of come a, hopefully, second season. We are introduced to Willie, a skateboarder that is Alex’s love interest. He shows him how to use his ghost abilities and helps him relax from his current state. He’s actually a nice guy to crush on, with some hidden secrets. Also, Julie and Luke have some energy together that we could potentially discover in the future. Even Nick, Julie’s first love interest, starts having a thing for her. Love triangle at its fullest!

I also would like to see how Julies mother plays a role in all of this. There must be some reason Julie is the only one to see the boys, and why she somehow helped Julie from beyond.

Conclusion

This is a show that blew me away from beginning to end! Secrets and twists around every corner, and even the villain of the show is something to be afraid of! I’m really impressed of this show, as anyone can watch this no matter what age. The music is beautiful and fun, and even the passion igniting in Julie could inspire a whole nation of people to do what they love. I hope this helps anyone find a new show to watch!
