Why Clueless Is Still Relevant in 2020

Thank you, Alicia Silverstone, for giving us a quotable fashion icon.

Clueless, the quintessential 90's movie, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Actually, to the date, July 19th. And the movie has stood the test of time, still being one of the most popular teen movies to date.

Even though I wasn’t alive during the iconic Clueless era, I am still very much drawn to the 90's: its fashion, music, sayings, and lifestyle. Ever since high school, my friends and I doted over Clueless like it was the greatest movie of all time (in my mind, it still is.) A few weeks ago, when Clueless was put back on Netflix, this called for a gal-time watch party with pjs and popcorn in hand. And anyone that knows me knows that I quote this masterpiece constantly. Thank goodness Clueless is still timeless today, and it represents 2020 perfectly.

Iconic Clueless lines, even in 2020

Cher: “Ugh, as if!”

Cher, the most popular girl in school, is wanted by every single boy, no matter their social status. But that doesn't mean that she reciprocates these feelings. When she's walking at school and a boy comes around and puts his arm around her against her will, cue the famous "ugh, as if!" line. Ladies, remember- your body is yours alone, and you get to give consent always.

Cher: "Oh my god, I am totally buggin'"

I don't know about you, but I've been buggin' at everything that's happened in 2020. Every day there's something new to freak out about, and it's been hard to stay calm. Luckily, we have Clueless back on Netflix to give us the sense of stability we need.

Cher: "Everything I think and everything I do is wrong.”

At this moment in our lives, nothing is going as planned. 2020 was supposed to be the year of new beginnings, yet it all went down the drain the minute it started and seemingly only gets worse. The minute we think we're doing something right, something gets in our way and makes it wrong. Raise a glass to a (hopefully) better 2021.

Cher: "Well, some teachers are trying to low-ball me, Daddy. And I know how you say, 'Never accept a first offer,' so I figure these grades are just a jumping-off point to start negotiations."

Cher is the absolute queen of standing up for herself, especially when it comes to schoool and grades. Her confidence is unparalleled, and we could all use a lesson in self-advocation, especially with the transition to online school.

Tai: “If I’m too good for him, then how come I’m not with him?”

The question of the century, Tai. We're always told that we're too good for him, but she has a point in saying that we deserve only the best. And we should be able to determine what's the best for us. Once quarantine is over, you'll see that the perfect guy is right around the corner.

6. Tai: “And my buns: They don’t feel nothin' like steel.”

Since quarantine, we've all been trying our best to keep up our fitness skills and trying out new workouts. Whether it's been Chloe Ting's challenges, daily walks/runs around the neighborhood, or anything in between, we've been trying to get those buns of steel and the perfect summer bod. But with corona, it's hard to keep up a strict routine, and everyone deserves a cheat day.

Cher (to Tai about Amber): “She’s a full-on Monet. It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s okay. But up close, it’s a big old mess.”

Today, we call this "a hot mess." Always relevant. The world itself has been a hot mess this entire year, and cleaning up our own hot messes and emerging from quarantine will be a difficult task.

Cher: “And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say ‘RSVP’ on the Statue of Liberty.”

Nothing has changed! Even the Statue of Liberty has stayed the same since the release of Clueless. And this still proves to be the greatest speech of all time. #Cherforpres
