Why Bojack Horseman’s “Hollyhock” would make a fantastic sequel series

Netflix's Bojack Horseman

Netflix’s Bojack Horseman came to a perfectly satisfying conclusion earlier this year. Unfortunately, Bojack’s half-sister, Hollyhock, had countless unresolved story beats. From the letter she wrote Bojack, to her complicated family tree, Hollyhock has plenty of story beats already established. Not to mention, those that are hinted towards, yet never developed. Although no sequel series is currently confirmed to be in the works, Hollyhock Manheim-Mannheim-Guerrero-Robinson-Zilberschlag-Hsung-Fonzerelli-McQuack would be the perfect main character if one were to be made.

In season six of Bojack Horseman , the show’s titular character, Bojack, had his life turned upside down. During this, Hollyhock sent Bojack a letter. Despite never seeing what was written in the letter, the audience can assume Hollyhock cut Bojack out of her life for good. This isn’t enough for an entire series to be centered around. However, it would be nice to finally see Hollyhock's perspective of season 6’s events leading up to the letter.

Was his involvement with Penny what led her away? Or was there another, sharper, final nail in the coffin? We’d love to see these questions answered in a series all to Hollyhock.

Whether or not Hollyhock cutting Bojack out of her life was justified or not is hard to decide without seeing her perspective. After all, Bojack was family.

Speaking of family, similar to Bojack, Hollyhock has a rather complicated one. Being the love child of Bojack’s father, Butterscotch Horseman, and his maid, Henrietta Platchkey, is complicated enough. On top of that, Hollyhock was adopted by eight gay men; hints the long last name. The Horseman family has always been a strong plot motivator in Bojack Horseman; and that would likely continue to be the case in a sequel series. With its toxic nature, the Horseman family could easily set up dozens of plot lines for Hollyhock.

Season 4, Episode 6, titled “Stupid Piece of Sh*t ” gives the audience a peek inside Bojack Horseman’s inner monologue. Although this episode plays a lot of it off as jokes, it ends on a darker note. Toward the end of the episode, Hollyhock tells Bojack about a tiny voice in the back of her head telling her everyone hates her, all too similar to the voice in Bojack’s monologue. Desperate to make her feel better, Bojack assures Hollyhock that the voice will go away. It would be absolutely heartbreaking to see Hollyhock years down the line with the same insecurities her half-brother, Bojack, had.

On that note, it’d be even more heartbreaking if she fell into some of Bojack’s more toxic habits like drinking, manipulation, and substance abuse. After the devastating downfall of Bojack in his final season, our hearts can’t take any more pain.

Of course, we’d also love to see some stories completely uninvolved with Bojack. Some Hollyhock drama and stories all for her. Perhaps, this hypothetical spinoff series could have a happier story when compared to the bittersweet one we got in the original animated series, Bojack Horseman.

However, it is important to realize the ending show creator Raphael-Bob Waksberg was going for with Bojack Horseman was an unfinished one. His intention was never to wrap everything up in a nice bow and give us resolution to all the drama in the final episodes. Instead, Diane perfectly captured the essence of what the show is all about with her final quote “Sometimes, life’s a bitch and you keep living.”

Either way, we’d be happy to see further adventures in the post-Bojack Hollywoob world. And although it is unlikely Hollywoob will return to the silver screen anytime soon, it is fun to imagine what could be if it did. Maybe, just maybe, if we’re lucky, Hollyhock will one-day return, warts and all.
