Wesley's Favorite Things About the 90s: Part 2

Highlighting more of my favorite things about this amazing decade

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 4 months ago • 3 min read

Greetings, Vocal readers and subscribers! I figured that one part highlighting my favorite things about the 90s wasn't enough. So, I'm back with a second part and just a heads up, almost all of the following entries on this list might be in the same category highlighted in my last story. In case you missed my previous story, you can read it in the link below. Without further ado, let's get this show started.

Fox Kids

If you grew up in the 1990s, chances are you've watched at least one of your favorite shows on Fox Kids. It was a children's programming block that first launched in September 1990 and aired until September 2002. Shows like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Bobby's World, and X-Men: The Animated Series were some of the shows we were invested in. Today, your favorite shows can be found on free streaming services like Tubi.

Disney Movies

The 1990s were the last great decade of Disney movies. The last Disney movies I saw in theaters were Freakier Friday last year and the live action versions of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid in 2015, 2017, and 2023 respectively. 90s Disney movies had great storytelling and stellar animation. The Lion King was the highest-grossing Disney movie from that decade, which earned nearly a billion dollars worldwide. One last thing I liked about 90s Disney movies were the catchy songs. Non-animated Disney films like The Mighty Ducks and Angels in the Outfield are timeless classics.

Nickelodeon Game Shows of the 90s

Two of my favorite Nickelodeon game shows I enjoyed watching back in the day were Get The Picture and GUTS. In the late 2000s, I discovered a channel called Nickelodeon Games and Sports for Kids, most commonly known as Nick GAS. GAS stood for Games and Sports. It aired from March 1999 to New Years Eve 2007. It aired the game shows you see in this image and for me, it was great reliving my childhood.

When Football Was, Well, Football

The 1990s were a time where football, specifically the NFL, was physical, aggressive, and the sport was enjoyable to watch. Now, it's too soft and Commissioner Roger Goddell ruined everything about football, such as fining players for wearing customized cleats during games, but they could wear them during practices. The league has an initiative called My Cause, My Cleats, where players showcase their customized cleats representing the causes that were very close to them. The double standard is hard to ignore. No wonder why people have called it the No Fun League. Rant over. Going back to 90s football, they were more exciting and engaging to see. I've been a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan since 1994, and they were the most talked about team during the 90s. They were the NFL version of the New York Yankees, who were also super successful in that decade. I'm showing my age a bit and in case you couldn't tell, I'm an old millennial. I'm glad that I grew up in the 90s, because it was the perfect time to be a football fan. I'm still waiting for the day that Jerry Jones is no longer the owner of the Cowboys and a real owner who actually cares about winning Super Bowls takes his place. It's been 30 something years since the Cowboys won a Super Bowl. For now, this Cowboys fan will have to deal with egotistical Jerry Jones for a little while longer. Dammit!

Field Day Was Awesome!

For the final entry on this list is a day that I've always looked forward to every May during my years in elementary school. It was the one day filled with fun. Events like tug of war and sack races was one of the things I loved about being a kid in the 1990s. I loved earning ribbons for doing different events. I'm not sure if schools participate in Field Day today, but I loved not having to sit in class all day. It's been 25 years, but it's good to reminisce about this annual event at school.

I might do a third part to this story, so let me know in the comments below what some things you loved about the 1990s. In the meantime, please give this story a like if you enjoyed it.
