Vimi: The Tragic Rise and Fall of Bollywood’s Forgotten Star
From the glamorous success of Hamraaz to a lonely and heartbreaking end, Vimi’s life remains one of the most tragic stories from Bollywood’s golden era.

Bollywood history is filled with stories of actors who became stars overnight, but very few are as heartbreaking as the story of Vimi, the beautiful actress who rose to fame during the 1960s and then almost disappeared from the film industry.
At the height of her career, Vimi worked alongside some of Hindi cinema’s biggest names. She lived a glamorous life, appeared in magazines, wore expensive clothes and became a recognizable face after the success of Hamraaz. Yet only a few years later, her career, finances and personal life reportedly fell apart.
Her journey from stardom to obscurity has made Vimi’s biography one of the most discussed forgotten stories of old Bollywood.
Who Was Vimi?
Vimi, whose original name was reportedly Vimlesh, was born in Punjab and later moved to Bombay, now Mumbai.
Apart from her striking appearance, she was also known for her voice and reportedly participated in programs connected with All India Radio during her younger years.
Vimi eventually married businessman Shivraj Agarwal. Her decision to enter the film industry created tension within the family, but her life changed dramatically when she received an opportunity to act in Hindi cinema.
And the opportunity could hardly have been bigger.
Hamraaz Made Vimi an Overnight Star
Vimi made a spectacular entry into Bollywood with B.R. Chopra’s Hamraaz.
The film featured established actors including Sunil Dutt and Raaj Kumar, yet the newcomer managed to attract considerable attention.
The success of Hamraaz transformed Vimi into one of the most talked-about newcomers of her time.

Audiences were fascinated by her beauty, magazines wanted her photographs, and filmmakers reportedly became interested in casting her in upcoming projects.
For Vimi, it appeared that the dream had finally come true.
She reportedly bought a luxurious apartment in Mumbai's fashionable Pali Hill area and began enjoying the lifestyle associated with a successful film star.
Unfortunately, the success did not last.
Career Problems Began Soon After Hamraaz
According to accounts surrounding Vimi’s career, disagreements involving film contracts and her husband’s involvement in professional decisions created difficulties with filmmakers.
After the extraordinary attention generated by Hamraaz, expectations surrounding her next films were naturally high.
Her film Aabroo, however, failed to recreate the success of her debut.
She later appeared in other films, while the Punjabi religious film Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai became widely remembered by audiences.
But Vimi herself struggled to build the consistent Bollywood career that many had predicted after Hamraaz.
One unsuccessful project followed another, and gradually the offers became fewer.
Personal Problems Made Everything Worse
Career failure was reportedly only one part of Vimi’s struggle.
Accounts about her later life describe serious problems within her marriage as well as growing emotional distress.
Her relationship eventually deteriorated, and she separated from her husband.
At the same time, she was reportedly struggling with alcohol.
For someone who had experienced fame so quickly, losing professional opportunities and personal stability at almost the same time proved devastating.
During this difficult period, another man, often identified in retellings of her story as Jolly, entered her life.
He reportedly promised to help revive her acting career.
Instead, later accounts describe the relationship as deeply troubled and damaging.
Vimi Tried to Make a Bollywood Comeback
Vimi did not immediately give up on films.
She eventually appeared in Vachan, which featured actors including Prem Chopra and Shashi Kapoor.
But the movie failed to restore her earlier position in Bollywood.
By then, the film industry that had once welcomed her as an exciting new star appeared to have moved on.
Vimi eventually disappeared from mainstream cinema almost completely.
Did Vimi Really Turn to Prostitution?
One of the most disturbing claims repeated in stories about Vimi’s final years is that extreme financial hardship eventually pushed her into prostitution.
This claim has been repeated in numerous retellings of her life, but because detailed documentation of her final years is limited, it should be treated carefully rather than presented as unquestionably established fact.
What appears clear from accounts of her life is that Vimi experienced severe financial difficulties.
She reportedly sold many of her possessions and even attempted to rebuild her life through a textile business called Vimi Textiles.
That venture reportedly failed as well.
Her financial condition continued deteriorating while her dependence on alcohol became increasingly serious.
Vimi’s Tragic Death
Vimi died on August 22, 1977, after reportedly suffering serious liver-related health problems.
She was still very young.
What happened after her death became perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the Vimi story.
Accounts claim that the actress who had once enjoyed enormous public attention had almost nobody around her during her final journey.
Her body was reportedly taken for cremation on a simple cart because there were not enough people present to carry it traditionally.
The contrast was devastating.
Only a few years earlier, audiences had watched her on the big screen alongside some of Bollywood's biggest stars.
Now, the former star reportedly left the world almost unnoticed.
Was Vimi Sourav Ganguly’s Mother?
Another strange rumor that occasionally appears online claims that Vimi was somehow connected to legendary Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly, with some versions even claiming that she was his mother.
The claim is false.
It appears to be one of several internet rumors that became attached to Vimi’s mysterious life after her death.
Did Vimi’s Story Inspire Om Shanti Om?
Fans have also compared Vimi's tragic life with elements of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s film Om Shanti Om.
There are certainly themes that may remind viewers of old Bollywood tragedies—fame, glamorous actresses, exploitation and forgotten stars.
However, similarities should not automatically be taken as proof that Om Shanti Om was directly based on Vimi’s life.
It is better viewed as an interesting comparison rather than an established connection.
Why Vimi’s Story Still Matters
Vimi’s life demonstrates how unpredictable fame can be.
She experienced something millions of aspiring actors dream about: a major film, famous co-stars, money, magazine coverage and instant recognition.
Yet fame provided no guarantee of lasting happiness or security.
Her career collapsed, her relationships deteriorated, her finances disappeared and the industry that once celebrated her gradually forgot her.
That is why, decades after her death, people continue searching for Vimi’s life story, Vimi’s death, Hamraaz actress Vimi and the forgotten actresses of Bollywood.
Perhaps remembering her today gives Vimi something she reportedly did not receive during her final years: recognition.
She may have disappeared from Bollywood screens long ago, but the tragic story behind the beautiful actress of Hamraazcontinues to ensure that Vimi is not completely forgotten.
