Vimanam Ending Explained: What Happened to Raju and Veerayya in the Final Flight?
The heartbreaking ending of Vimanam reveals the true meaning behind Veerayya’s promise to his son Raju and turns a simple airplane journey into an unforgettable story of a father’s love.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Vimanam, including the complete ending and the fate of Veerayya and Raju.
Vimanam Story Explained
Vimanam is an emotional father-son story built around one innocent dream: a young boy wants to travel on an airplane at least once in his life.
Veerayya is a poor, physically disabled single father whose entire world revolves around his young son, Raju. Raju’s mother died while giving birth to him, leaving Veerayya to raise the boy alone.
Despite his poverty and physical limitations, Veerayya never allows Raju to feel that something is missing from his life. He works hard, treats people with kindness and constantly encourages his son to study.
Raju, meanwhile, is fascinated by airplanes.
Whenever father and son pass the airport, Raju stops to watch planes take off. He collects airplane toys and dreams about eventually becoming a pilot. He even promises that when he grows up, he will take his father with him wherever he flies.
For Veerayya, Raju’s dream initially seems like something that can wait.
Then everything changes.
Why Does Veerayya Decide to Take Raju on a Flight?
Raju performs brilliantly in his studies and earns a scholarship, giving Veerayya hope that his son could genuinely build a better future.
But shortly afterward, Raju suddenly collapses.
Doctors reveal the devastating truth to Veerayya: Raju is suffering from advanced blood cancer and may have very little time left.
Veerayya hides the truth from his son.
Instead of telling Raju that he is dying, he decides to fulfil the boy’s biggest wish—to travel in an airplane.
The problem is money.
For someone like Veerayya, even an ordinary flight ticket is incredibly expensive. He tries almost everything he can think of to raise the money. He takes physically demanding jobs, asks for help, sells possessions and accepts humiliating situations because nothing matters more to him than giving Raju one moment of happiness.
Every time Veerayya gets close to collecting enough money, another obstacle appears.
Eventually, he is even willing to give up his home because, in his mind, a house has no meaning if the son he built it for will no longer be there.
Does Raju Finally Get to Sit in an Airplane?
Yes.
After an exhausting struggle, Veerayya finally manages to buy the tickets.
The day of the flight becomes one of the happiest moments of Raju’s short life.
At the airport, the boy is overwhelmed with excitement. Everything fascinates him—from seeing the aircraft up close to finally sitting inside the cabin.
Veerayya watches his son’s face and realizes that all the suffering was worth it.
Raju has finally achieved his dream.
But the movie saves its most devastating moment for the final few minutes.
Vimanam Ending Explained: Does Raju Die?
Yes. Raju dies while sitting inside the airplane.
Before takeoff, Veerayya asks Raju to look outside the window, but his son does not respond.
Veerayya soon understands what has happened.
Raju has quietly passed away in the seat beside him.
Yet Veerayya cannot accept the idea of ending the journey there.
He had sacrificed almost everything to give his son this flight. More importantly, Raju had dreamed not merely of sitting inside an aircraft but of actually flying through the sky.
Veerayya therefore pleads for the journey to continue.
The airplane finally takes off.
As it rises above the clouds, Veerayya continues talking to Raju as though his son can still hear him.
He tells him to look outside.
He talks about the beautiful clouds.
And through his tears, the father tells his son that his dream has finally come true.
Raju is finally flying.
Why Does Veerayya Die at the End?
The ending becomes even more heartbreaking after the aircraft lands.
Veerayya is also found dead beside his son.
This moment connects directly to one of the most important promises between the father and son.
Earlier, Raju had asked his father whether Veerayya would always stay with him wherever he went.
Veerayya promised that he would.
The ending completes that promise in the most tragic way possible.
Raju leaves the world, and Veerayya follows him.
Symbolically, the two never separate.
What Is the Real Meaning of Vimanam's Ending?
The airplane in Vimanam represents much more than transportation.
For Raju, it represents wonder, freedom and a future he desperately wants to experience.
For Veerayya, it becomes the final proof of his love.
He cannot save his son from cancer. He cannot change his poverty. He cannot control the unfair circumstances surrounding his life.
But he can still fight to give Raju one beautiful memory before everything ends.
That is what makes the final flight so powerful.
Veerayya fails to save Raju's life, but he succeeds in fulfilling his dream.
And ultimately, Vimanam is not really a story about airplanes.
It is a story about how far a parent can go for a child.
