Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Vanchana, including the identity of Father Joseph’s killer and the movie’s final twist.

The 2024 Telugu thriller Vanchana begins like a familiar murder mystery. A respected priest is found dead inside his house, his trusted driver is surrounded by evidence, and a young lawyer unexpectedly steps forward to defend him.

But Vanchana is not really about discovering whether Chalam killed Father Joseph.

Its biggest mystery is why Krishna, the lawyer apparently fighting to save Chalam, becomes involved in the case at all.

By the time the truth is revealed, almost everything we believed about Krishna’s investigation changes.

The Curse of Gokulam Village

The movie opens with an old legend connected to Gokulam village.

Years earlier, a sage named Agnihotri lived near the Araku hills and devoted himself to Lord Shiva. After a devastating flood destroyed the villagers’ food and homes, starving people entered the sage’s ashram while he was away and killed some of his animals for food.

When Agnihotri returned, he became furious and cursed Gokulam. According to the curse, a terrifying demon would repeatedly return to destroy the village and its people.

The desperate villagers prayed to Lord Narayana for protection.

Narayana eventually appeared, killed the demon and protected Gokulam. However, before leaving, he established an important condition: whenever the danger returned, the villagers had to remain inside their homes at night. As long as they followed the rule, Narayana would return in another form to protect them.

This mythological story appears separate from the murder investigation at first, but its ideas of wrongdoing, punishment and a protector appearing in an unexpected form mirror the events that follow.

Father Joseph Is Found Murdered

The main story begins early on December 17, 2022.

A milkman arrives at Father Joseph’s house but receives no response. Chalam, Joseph’s longtime driver, is also outside.

Chalam has a key to the rear entrance because Joseph sometimes suffered medical episodes and had previously given him access in case of an emergency.

When they enter the house, they discover Joseph dead on the floor.

Police immediately begin investigating.

The circumstances quickly make Chalam look suspicious.

Joseph’s locker is open and money appears to have been stolen. Investigators also discover physical evidence near the body, including a shirt button similar to one missing from Chalam’s shirt.

Things become even worse when police search Chalam’s home and discover a bag containing ₹5 lakh.

Forensic evidence appears equally damaging.

Chalam’s hair, skin traces and other DNA are found around the crime scene, while his fingerprints are connected to the murder weapon.

From the police’s perspective, the case appears almost complete.

Krishna Takes Chalam’s Case

Chalam’s wife and sister initially hire another defense lawyer.

However, the lawyer admits that the evidence is heavily against Chalam and becomes frustrated when the family cannot immediately pay his fee.

That is when Krishna enters the story.

Krishna is a young lawyer who lives with and cares for his paralysed mother. After hearing Chalam’s case in court, he approaches the family and says he believes Chalam may be innocent.

He even offers to fight the case without charging them.

To Chalam’s desperate family, Krishna appears to be their only hope.

Krishna studies the evidence and immediately notices something strange about the ₹5 lakh recovered from Chalam’s house.

Chalam’s mother says that an unknown man wearing a mask brought the bag to their house. The stranger claimed to be Father David’s driver and asked her to give the money to Chalam so it could later be delivered to Joseph.

Krishna visits Father David.

David gives him a shocking answer: he does not have a driver.

In fact, he does not even own a car.

Someone deliberately lied about being David’s driver.

Krishna Challenges the Forensic Evidence

In court, Krishna begins questioning the prosecution’s case.

He argues that Chalam had worked around Joseph for approximately eight years. Because he regularly entered the house and handled Joseph’s personal affairs, finding his hair, skin particles and other DNA inside the property would not automatically prove murder.

Even the forensic doctor acknowledges that DNA belonging to someone who regularly works inside a house can naturally appear in many places.

Krishna also questions why police failed to properly investigate the mysterious man who delivered the ₹5 lakh.

Despite these arguments, the court refuses to release Chalam because Krishna still cannot produce direct evidence proving someone else committed the murder.

Then Krishna discovers another problem.

The Missing Hour in Chalam’s Story

Krishna watches a video showing an accident on Araku Ghat Road.

Joseph can be seen in the footage at around 8:30 p.m.

Based on the travel time, Krishna calculates that Chalam should have dropped Joseph home at approximately 9:00 p.m. and reached his own house around 9:30 p.m.

But Chalam claimed he returned home at approximately 10:30 p.m.

That leaves around one unexplained hour.

When Krishna confronts him, Chalam finally admits that after dropping Joseph off, he went to see a woman named Mamatha, with whom he was having an affair.

Mamatha confirms that Chalam visited her. However, he had to leave quickly when her husband unexpectedly returned.

Chalam later admits that he remained nearby for around 40 minutes, hoping Mamatha’s husband might leave again.

The explanation creates uncertainty, but it does not completely clear him.

Chalam also tells Krishna about another woman named Ananya whom he met while travelling with Joseph. She once invited him to a hotel, gave him sweets, and he later lost consciousness. When he woke up, his money and belongings were missing.

At first, this sounds like an unrelated cheating incident.

Later, it becomes one of the most important pieces of the entire story.

Chalam Is Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

Krishna continues searching for alternative suspects.

A shopkeeper tells him that a man named Seenu was near Joseph’s house on the night of the murder. Krishna tracks him down, but Seenu explains that he worked for a drama company that regularly received donations from Joseph.

Seenu says he was only there to thank Joseph.

He ran from Krishna because he was involved in supplying marijuana and mistakenly believed Krishna was a police officer.

With no solid alternative theory, Krishna ultimately fails to overturn the prosecution’s case.

The DNA evidence, fingerprints, missing button and ₹5 lakh found at Chalam’s house remain too powerful.

The court sentences Chalam to life imprisonment.

It appears Krishna has lost.

Then Vanchana reveals its real story.

Who Really Killed Father Joseph?

After Chalam has been sent to prison, Krishna visits him.

Chalam breaks down and asks why he has been punished for a murder he did not commit.

Krishna calmly tells him that he knows Chalam did not murder Joseph.

He also knows exactly who did.

Because Krishna himself killed Father Joseph.

This confession completely changes the meaning of everything we have watched.

Krishna was never genuinely trying to discover Joseph’s murderer.

He already knew the answer.

Why Did Krishna Kill Joseph?

The movie then travels approximately five years into the past.

Krishna’s father, Koteswara Rao, was a farmer living in Gokulam with his wife and daughter Tulasi. Krishna was away studying law in Delhi.

Koteswara Rao’s farming had been struggling because his crops were being damaged.

Meanwhile, foreign Christian organisations provided money to Father Joseph to establish a new church in an area where one did not already exist.

Joseph became interested in Koteswara Rao’s land near Araku Ghat.

He told the farmer that a chemical factory would soon be built nearby and would eventually destroy the agricultural land. Joseph offered to acquire Koteswara Rao’s property and supposedly help him obtain better land elsewhere.

But the story about the chemical factory was a lie.

Koteswara Rao eventually learned that a ring road was planned for the area, meaning the value of nearby land was likely to rise significantly.

Joseph wanted the property before its real value became known.

Koteswara Rao also accidentally overheard evidence of Joseph’s other wrongdoing, including financial manipulation and an attempt to frame another priest by planting drugs inside his home.

Realising Joseph was dishonest, Koteswara Rao refused to sell.

Joseph then found a crueler way to pressure him.

How Joseph Destroyed Krishna’s Family

Joseph noticed that Chalam had feelings for Koteswara Rao’s daughter, Tulasi.

He ordered Chalam to become intimate with her and secretly record the encounter.

Chalam initially resisted because he claimed he genuinely loved Tulasi.

Joseph then exploited Chalam’s financial problems, promising to help pay for his sister’s marriage.

Chalam eventually agreed.

He took Tulasi to a hotel and secretly positioned his phone to record them.

Joseph later showed the intimate video to Koteswara Rao and used it as blackmail.

He demanded the farmer’s land.

Joseph also admitted that he had intentionally contributed to the destruction of farmers’ crops by selling manipulated agricultural chemicals. Once their farms stopped producing properly, desperate farmers became easier to pressure into selling their properties.

With his daughter’s reputation being threatened, Koteswara Rao finally transferred the land.

Unable to deal with everything that had happened, he later took his own life.

Tulasi believed her actions had caused her father’s death and also died by suicide.

Krishna returned home to discover his family destroyed.

His mother had suffered such a severe shock after losing her husband and daughter that she became paralysed.

For Krishna, Joseph was responsible for everything.

And Chalam had willingly helped him.

Krishna’s Revenge Plan Explained

Krishna did not simply decide to murder Joseph.

He created an elaborate plan designed to punish both Joseph and Chalam.

Another priest had previously been framed after drugs were planted inside his home. Chalam had participated in that plan by hiding the drugs.

The priest later died by suicide after being unable to cope with the humiliation and false accusation.

His daughter was Ananya.

She also wanted revenge.

Krishna and Ananya therefore joined forces.

Ananya was the same woman Chalam earlier described to Krishna as someone who had drugged and robbed him.

That incident was not random.

It was part of Krishna’s larger preparation.

Ananya brought Chalam to a hotel and gave him drugged sweets. While Chalam was unconscious, she collected material that could later be used against him, including hair, skin traces and a button from his shirt.

Krishna then murdered Father Joseph.

After killing him, Krishna planted Chalam’s biological evidence around the crime scene and arranged the evidence so that police would naturally identify Chalam as the killer.

The ₹5 lakh was another part of the setup.

The mysterious person pretending to be Father David’s driver was connected to Krishna’s plan. The money was deliberately placed inside Chalam’s home so police would interpret it as stolen cash and establish a financial motive.

Krishna had manufactured an almost perfect murder case.

Why Did Krishna Become Chalam’s Lawyer?

This is the most disturbing part of the ending.

Krishna did not become Chalam’s lawyer because he wanted to save him.

He became Chalam’s lawyer because he wanted to supervise his own crime.

By gaining access to the investigation, witness statements and forensic evidence, Krishna could see whether police had discovered anything capable of exposing him.

Every apparent attempt to defend Chalam also allowed Krishna to inspect the strength of the case he had constructed.

Krishna challenged certain pieces of evidence and investigated suspicious details, but he never pushed the case far enough to reveal himself as the real murderer.

In other words, Chalam’s defense lawyer was also the person who had framed him.

Krishna controlled both sides of Chalam’s fate.

Why Did Krishna Frame Chalam?

Joseph was Krishna’s primary target because his corruption, blackmail and manipulation led to the destruction of Krishna’s family.

But Chalam was not innocent in Krishna’s eyes.

Chalam had helped Joseph exploit Tulasi by secretly recording their intimate encounter.

He had also helped frame another priest by planting drugs.

Even though Chalam did not kill Joseph, Krishna viewed him as someone who repeatedly helped Joseph hurt innocent people whenever it benefited him.

So Krishna created a punishment based on Chalam’s own past behaviour.

Chalam had once helped frame an innocent man.

Now Chalam himself was framed for a crime he did not commit.

That irony is central to Vanchana.

Vanchana Ending Meaning

The ending leaves us with an uncomfortable moral question.

Legally, Krishna is unquestionably guilty. He murders Joseph, manipulates evidence and intentionally sends Chalam to prison for a murder Chalam did not commit.

But the movie also reveals that Joseph and Chalam had previously destroyed other lives through corruption, manipulation and false accusations.

Krishna therefore becomes both victim and criminal.

He uses the law not to deliver conventional justice, but to create his own version of punishment.

This is also where the opening legend of Gokulam becomes meaningful.

The story begins with a community suffering because of wrongdoing and waiting for a powerful figure to confront the evil threatening it.

In the modern story, Joseph becomes the destructive force whose actions ruin multiple families.

Krishna then appears as the person who destroys him.

But unlike the divine protector in the legend, Krishna is morally compromised. His revenge creates another injustice rather than restoring innocent lives.

That contradiction makes the ending much darker.

Final Thoughts

Vanchana initially presents Krishna as an inexperienced but determined lawyer fighting against an unfair investigation.

The final revelation turns that image upside down.

Krishna never accidentally entered Chalam’s case.

He created it.

He killed Joseph, planted Chalam’s DNA, arranged the money, manipulated the investigation and then positioned himself close enough to the legal proceedings to make sure his revenge remained hidden.

Joseph dies for what he did to Krishna’s family.

Chalam receives life imprisonment for a murder he did not commit, but Krishna sees his punishment as repayment for the lives Chalam helped destroy.

The final twist transforms Vanchana from a courtroom murder mystery into a revenge thriller about guilt, consequences and the dangerous line between justice and vengeance.

And that is what makes the ending so effective: the lawyer we spend most of the movie trusting was never trying to solve the murder.

He was making sure nobody ever solved it.
