Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Unmadham, including its mystery, climax and ending.

What Is Unmadham About?

Unmadham begins with a strange legend surrounding an old police case file.

For nearly six years, nobody at a particular police station has dared to touch the file. According to the officers, something terrible happens whenever somebody tries to investigate it. Accidents, deaths and personal tragedies have gradually turned an ordinary cold-case file into something everyone believes is cursed.

Then Shelly enters the picture.

Shelly is a police constable, but becoming a successful filmmaker is his real dream. He spends his time developing stories and approaching producers, only to face rejection again and again.

Eventually, financial pressure and family responsibilities force him to return to police duty.

That decision unexpectedly leads him to the strangest story of his life.

How Does Shelly Discover the Cursed Case?

After a difficult incident at work, Shelly is transferred to another police station.

There, without knowing its history, he touches the mysterious file that other officers have avoided for years.

Almost immediately, strange incidents begin happening around him.

His colleagues are convinced that Shelly has awakened the curse.

Shelly initially dismisses everything as superstition. But when he hears the complete story behind the file, his reaction is very different from everyone else's.

Instead of running away from it, he sees an incredible movie idea.

He even presents the concept to a producer, who finally shows interest in his story.

There is only one problem: Shelly does not know how the original case ended.

To complete his screenplay, he needs to discover the truth.

Why Does the Case File Burn?

One night, Shelly secretly removes the file from the cupboard and begins reading it.

The electricity suddenly goes out.

A mysterious lizard repeatedly appears around him, becoming one of the film's most important supernatural symbols.

Before Shelly can properly study the evidence, he briefly leaves the file unattended.

When he returns, it is burning.

The entire original case file is destroyed.

Terrified that he will lose his job, Shelly replaces the burned documents with blank sheets, wraps them in the same cloth and secretly returns the fake file to the cupboard.

Now he has an even bigger reason to investigate the case himself.

Who Was Keerthan?

Shelly eventually tracks down the retired officer who originally investigated the case.

He learns that the file concerned a young woman named Keerthan, whose body had been discovered near a railway track six years earlier.

Investigators could never conclusively determine exactly what had happened to her.

The retired officer gives Shelly his old notes, allowing him to restart the investigation.

Shelly discovers that Keerthan had been in love with a young man.

But there is another disturbing detail.

Her boyfriend had also died.

Shelly begins to suspect that the two deaths were connected.

Why Does Shelly Start Seeing Strange Visions?

As Shelly becomes obsessed with the investigation, his behaviour changes dramatically.

He begins experiencing strange visions, losing awareness of his surroundings and seeing events he could not possibly have witnessed.

His family believes the investigation is destroying his mental health.

But the movie eventually reveals something much darker.

Shelly is not simply imagining everything.

Keerthan's spirit has become connected to him.

The strange visions are actually fragments of Keerthan's memories.

Even the recurring lizard appears to function as a supernatural guide, pushing Shelly closer to the truth.

What Really Happened to Keerthan?

The visions finally reveal the events surrounding Keerthan's death.

On her boyfriend's birthday, the couple went to an apartment connected to a property matter.

After her boyfriend entered the building, Keerthan eventually followed him.

Inside, she discovered something horrifying — a dead body.

Realising she may have discovered a serious crime, Keerthan began recording evidence on her phone.

Then another tragedy occurred.

Her boyfriend fell from above and died.

Keerthan realised that dangerous people inside the apartment were responsible.

She tried to escape and reach the police with the evidence on her phone.

But the criminals caught her.

Keerthan was attacked with an iron rod and killed. Her phone was taken, and her body was dumped near the railway track to make her death appear connected to a railway accident.

For six years, the truth remained buried.

Unmadham Ending Explained

Shelly now understands what happened, but supernatural visions alone cannot prove murder.

He needs physical evidence.

His attempt to expose the people connected to the apartment initially goes disastrously wrong. Shelly is caught with money and accused of accepting a bribe.

Because of his increasingly unusual behaviour, the people against him successfully portray him as mentally unstable.

Shelly eventually ends up in a psychiatric facility.

But Keerthan has one final clue for him.

During another vision, the mysterious lizard leads his attention toward an area outside the apartment and an underground location.

Shelly realises that something is buried there.

After receiving help from another officer, police reach the location and excavate the area.

They discover a body hidden beneath concrete.

Forensic examination provides the breakthrough Shelly desperately needed.

The remains are connected to Keerthan's boyfriend.

The discovery finally proves that the old deaths were not simply accidents.

They were murders.

The people responsible are arrested, and after six years, Keerthan and her boyfriend finally receive justice.

What Happens to Shelly at the End?

The cursed investigation also transforms Shelly's personal life.

The case that nearly destroyed his career ultimately gives him the story he had spent years searching for.

Shelly turns the extraordinary experience into his film.

The movie becomes successful, finally allowing him to achieve his long-held dream of entering the film industry.

There is an interesting irony here.

Everyone else believed the cursed file would destroy whoever touched it.

For Shelly, it almost did.

But the same file eventually became the reason his dream came true.

Does Unmadham Set Up a Sequel?

The final moments suggest that Shelly's connection with the supernatural may not be completely over.

Although Keerthan receives justice, there are indications that the mysterious force surrounding Shelly could continue guiding him toward other stories and unexplained cases.

That gives the ending a sequel-like tease.

The first mystery may have been solved, but Shelly's unusual journey could only be beginning.

Final Thoughts

Unmadham combines a police investigation, murder mystery and supernatural elements with the story of an unsuccessful filmmaker desperately searching for the idea that could change his life.

The cursed case file is an effective hook, but the deeper mystery is not whether the file itself carries bad luck.

It is why Keerthan's story refused to stay buried.

By the climax, the supernatural elements become the bridge between an unsolved crime and the evidence needed to expose it.

And that is what makes the ending satisfying: Shelly does not simply solve an old mystery. He gives two victims justice while finally discovering the story that changes his own future.
