Two Comical K-Dramas to Watch in December

I've recently added stumbled across these funny Korean shows.

While cramming last-minute information into my brain during finals, I have found two new Korean dramas to distract me from my studies. Needless to say, it was the best procrastination tactic that I had ever taken because now I am hooked on a fishing line, and I am not going anywhere. Without further ado, let’s get into this “persuasive” article.

The first show on my tiny list, well, it’s barely a list, is True Beauty. Before I dive into this series, it is in my best interest to inform whoever is reading this that True Beauty was originally a Webtoon by Yaongyi. Webtoons is a website and an app for comic fans to read their favorite webcomics, manga, and so much more. The stories have over twenty-three genres for readers to enjoy various fields of comics.

Comic book fan, Im Ju-kyung has always been known as an outcast among her peers in school and in general because of her looks. With unappealing features, comes a great deal of tribulations that Ju-kyung faces daily, including being bullied by a group of girls in her grade. When Ju Kyung attempts to take her own life on a rooftop, a former K-pop idol, who is currently a student in high school, saves her from going through with her action.

Things take a turn from here when Ju-kyung’s father loses their home, to which she and her family have to move, and she has to transfer to a new school. Suddenly, Ju-kyung is inspired to do makeup and alter her mien physically thus creating a new and distinct “it” girl look/identity that gives her a chance to have a fresh new start as a new student. When Ju-kyung and her family move to another apartment, Ju-kyung is unaware that the same boy on the roof who prevented her from making the biggest mistake of her life, Lee Su-ho attends the school that she is transferring to. If matters aren’t made worse, a friend and former member of Su-ho, who was in the same band as him, Han Seo-joon, has decided to come back to school after a hiatus of God knows where. If you’ve seen Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, then you can paint a vivid picture of both Seo-joon and Su-ho fighting over Ju-kyung.

Despite Ju-kyung becoming popular at her new school for her pretty appearance, life stops at nothing to remind her that without her makeup, she is someone who should not be treated with respect.

So far, this show is off-the-wall hilarious. I recommend watching it on Rakuten Viki, an Asian streaming service for films and TV shows) or any other streaming service that may or may not be legal. (Side note: I am not condoning anyone to do such an immoral thing.)

My second favorite on my tiny list is The Uncanny Counter, which stars Gugudan’s Sejong as one of the protagonists in the series named Do Ha-na. The show follows So Mun, a boy, who was traumatized at a young age when his parents (police officers), were killed in a car accident at a stoplight. Luckily So Mun survived, however, the tragedy cost him the price of being crippled for years until he gets possessed by a spirit that is linked to a group of demon hunters called the Counters. If you’re a fan of Supernatural or Ghostbusters, I think this is a perfect show for you on Netflix as it focuses on the paranormal while adding a sprinkle of comedy on the top.

While doing some research on this article, it has come to my attention that The Uncanny Counter is yet another Korean drama based on a Webtoon called Amazing Rumor by Jang Yi. Way to go, writers and illustrators of Webtoons for grabbing the spotlight this year.

Boy, I sure hope this article was convincing enough to persuade you all to watch two of the most popular K-Dramas to watch during the holidays. If not, “carry on” as Beyonce would say.
