Two Biggest Fantasy Movies You Cannot Miss: Jumanji: Open World and Children of Blood and Bone
Two spectacular trailers promise magical kingdoms, dangerous adventures and completely new fantasy worlds.

Fantasy cinema is preparing for two massive adventures. Over the years, audiences have explored unforgettable fictional worlds through franchises such as Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. However, the latest trailers for Children of Blood and Bone and Jumanji: Open World suggest that fantasy fans may soon have two very different but equally exciting cinematic experiences.
One movie introduces a magical African kingdom filled with ancient powers, rebellion and mythology. The other brings the dangerous world of Jumanji into reality, completely reversing the concept of the previous films.
Here is why these two fantasy movies deserve a place on your watchlist.

Children of Blood and Bone Introduces a New Kind of Fantasy World
Children of Blood and Bone is based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the movie transports viewers to Orïsha, a fictional kingdom inspired by West African mythology and culture.
The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman belonging to a community that once possessed magical abilities. In the past, powerful people known as the maji could control different supernatural forces. However, King Saran feared that magic would eventually threaten his rule.
To protect his throne, the king violently removed magic from the kingdom and oppressed everyone connected to it.
Years later, Zélie discovers that magic may not be completely gone. She begins a dangerous journey to restore the powers that were stolen from her people. Accompanied by her brother and two members of the royal family, she must challenge the king’s army and inspire a rebellion against his brutal rule.
The official synopsis confirms that the central mission involves reclaiming magic while fighting the monarchy that destroyed it. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theatres and premium formats in January 2027, with dates varying slightly by region.
The Trailer’s Biggest Strength Is Its World-Building
The first trailer may remind some viewers of Black Panther, especially because of its African-inspired settings, costumes and powerful visual identity. However, Children of Blood and Bone appears to be building its own mythology rather than simply following an existing superhero formula.
The landscapes look huge, the costumes feel carefully designed and the magical sequences contain a strong cultural identity. Instead of presenting another medieval European-style kingdom, the movie introduces architecture, traditions and spiritual ideas inspired by African cultures.
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood reportedly filmed in real locations across South Africa and the Canary Islands. She wanted the actors to experience physical environments instead of performing every sequence against green screens. Production designer Hannah Beachler, known for her work on Black Panther, also helped construct the world of Orïsha.
The cast is another major attraction. Thuso Mbedu plays Zélie, while the supporting lineup includes Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Regina King, Lashana Lynch and Viola Davis.
That combination of talent, mythology and large-scale production gives the movie franchise-level potential. Since the original novel belongs to a completed trilogy, a successful first film could naturally lead to multiple sequels.

Jumanji: Open World Completely Reverses the Game
While Children of Blood and Bone creates a new fantasy universe, Jumanji: Open World expands a world audiences already know.
At the end of Jumanji: The Next Level, animals from the game appeared in the real world. That scene suggested that the boundary between Jumanji and reality had finally been broken.
The new trailer takes that idea much further.
This time, the characters are not simply entering the game. Jumanji itself is entering their world.
Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, Franklin “Mouse” Finbar and Professor Shelly Oberon appear outside the game without being controlled by the original players. They are now independent video-game avatars moving around in the real world.
Meanwhile, other characters appear to have been pulled into Jumanji. This creates two parallel adventures: one team must survive the chaos unfolding on Earth, while another must enter the game and discover how to repair it.
According to the trailer’s setup, Jumanji has become trapped in a malfunctioning “demo mode,” allowing its characters, animals and dangerous environments to spill into reality.
Two Worlds and Two Versions of the Heroes
The most fascinating part of the trailer is the possibility of seeing the same avatars in two different realities.
Dwayne Johnson’s Bravestone can apparently exist outside the game while events involving the avatar system continue inside Jumanji. The same could apply to the characters played by Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.
This creates several interesting questions. Who controls the avatars when they are outside the game? Can they survive without players? What happens when a real person meets the character who once represented them? Most importantly, who created Jumanji and why does its technology possess such extraordinary power?
The franchise has explained its rules, levels and magical dangers, but it has never fully revealed the origin of the game. Since Jumanji: Open World is being promoted as the final instalment of this modern trilogy, the movie may finally explore some of those unanswered mysteries.
Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan return alongside Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Nick Jonas and Danny DeVito. The film is directed by Jake Kasdan and is scheduled to open in theatres on December 25, 2026.
Which Fantasy Movie Looks More Exciting?
These movies offer completely different experiences.
Children of Blood and Bone is a serious fantasy epic about lost magic, oppression, identity and rebellion. It has the potential to introduce audiences to a visually fresh mythology that has rarely received this level of Hollywood investment.
Jumanji: Open World, on the other hand, promises comedy, action and nostalgic entertainment. Its real-world invasion concept also gives the franchise an opportunity to deliver its biggest and most unpredictable adventure.
For originality and world-building, Children of Blood and Bone currently looks more ambitious. For pure entertainment and familiar characters, Jumanji: Open World may become the bigger crowd-pleaser.
Either way, fantasy fans have two major theatrical adventures waiting for them.
