When Tumbbad released in 2018, it wasn't the blockbuster many expected it to become. The film struggled at the box office despite receiving critical acclaim for its breathtaking cinematography, haunting atmosphere, and unique blend of Indian mythology and folklore. Over time, however, it found a loyal audience through streaming platforms. Its theatrical re-release proved just how powerful word-of-mouth could be, earning more than ₹38 crore and cementing Tumbbad as one of Bollywood's greatest cult classics.

Now, Tumbbad 2 is officially happening, and while the announcement has generated excitement, it has also created one of the biggest debates on social media. The reason isn't the story or the production scale—it's the casting of Alia Bhatt.

The original Tumbbad became legendary because it relied entirely on storytelling rather than star power. Sohum Shah, who served as both producer and lead actor, believed in the project even after several people rejected it. The film's success wasn't driven by celebrity appeal but by its unforgettable world-building, slow-burning horror, and atmospheric filmmaking.

That is exactly why many fans are worried.

According to reports, Tumbbad 2 has already begun production under director Adesh Prasad, while original director Rahi Anil Barve will not be returning to helm the sequel. A massive seven-to-eight-acre set has reportedly been built in Mumbai, recreating an entire town for the first shooting schedule. With an estimated budget of around ₹100 crore and a planned release in December 2027 under the tagline "Pralay Aayega", the sequel is clearly aiming to be much bigger than the original.

The cast has also expanded significantly. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was already confirmed for a major role, and now Alia Bhatt has officially joined the project. Sohum Shah announced her inclusion on Instagram, calling it the beginning of a new chapter.

From a commercial perspective, the decision makes complete sense.

Alia Bhatt is one of Bollywood's biggest stars. Her presence can attract wider audiences, generate stronger marketing campaigns, and increase the film's global visibility. Large stars often help secure better theatrical distribution and bigger investments.

But the concern among longtime fans goes much deeper than simple casting.

Many believe that Tumbbad represented something rare in Indian cinema—a film where the story remained the true hero. Once major stars enter a franchise, filmmakers often feel pressured to adjust the screenplay, expand certain characters, increase screen time, and market the film around celebrity appeal rather than narrative depth.

That shift is what worries audiences.

The debate isn't really about whether Alia Bhatt is talented. Most viewers acknowledge that she is a skilled performer. The bigger question is whether she is genuinely the best fit for the mysterious and unsettling world of Tumbbad, or whether her casting reflects Bollywood's familiar tendency to rely on established industry names instead of discovering fresh talent.

Social media reactions have reflected this divide. Some fans are thrilled that such a respected actress has joined the franchise, believing her presence will only strengthen the sequel. Others feel the filmmakers should have cast a relatively unknown actress to preserve the grounded realism that made the original so memorable.

Adding to these concerns is the absence of the original director. Creative leadership often shapes a franchise's identity, and whenever a new filmmaker takes over, audiences naturally wonder whether the original vision will remain intact.

To be fair, Alia Bhatt herself has expressed genuine admiration for Tumbbad. She revealed that she agreed to the project after being deeply impressed by the screenplay and described the original film as one that stayed with her long after watching it. According to her, very few films create such an original cinematic world.

That statement suggests this may not simply be another commercial assignment. It could be a role she truly believes in as an artist.

Ultimately, the real issue isn't Alia Bhatt's casting. It's whether Tumbbad 2 can preserve the qualities that made the original unforgettable. If the filmmakers maintain the slow-burn horror, rich mythology, eerie folklore, and immersive storytelling that defined the first film, then even a major star can become a valuable addition rather than a distraction.

However, if celebrity appeal begins to overshadow narrative craftsmanship, fans' concerns may prove justified.

The future of Tumbbad 2 will depend on one simple question: Will the story remain the heart of the film, or will star power take its place? If the sequel remembers what made the original special, it has the potential to become another modern classic rather than just another big-budget franchise installment.
