Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Trending, including the reality game, Arul’s secret, Arjun and Meera’s past, and the movie’s ending.

Trending Movie Story Explained

Trending begins with Arjun and Meera, a popular YouTube couple who appear to be living the perfect social-media life. They have spent around four years making videos together, are approaching three million subscribers, have won recognition as a popular couple, and have used their online income to buy an expensive house and car.

But beneath that perfect image is a dangerous obsession: they are desperate to remain relevant.

Their views are falling, and Arjun is constantly thinking about what they can do next to become viral again. He even suggests that they pretend to be getting divorced for a month just to create dramatic content.

Then their situation suddenly becomes much worse.

Their main YouTube channel disappears, taking their biggest source of income with it. They create a new channel, Arjun Meera 2.0, but the audience response is weak. Their finances collapse, loan payments remain unpaid, and men from whom they borrowed money begin threatening them.

They desperately need around ₹20 lakh.

That desperation opens the door to the movie's most dangerous element: a mysterious reality game.

The Mysterious Call That Changes Everything

Arjun had earlier received a strange phone call from a private number offering him money for completing ridiculously simple tasks. Thinking it was a prank or scam, he ignored it.

Later, Meera receives a similar call.

Her first challenge is almost laughably easy: go outside and ring her own doorbell three times within ten seconds.

She completes the task.

Then money actually appears in her account.

Suddenly, the mysterious caller no longer looks like a scammer.

At 5 p.m., Arjun and Meera receive another call and learn the full offer. They can participate in a seven-day game consisting of four stages. If they survive and complete the challenges, they could potentially win ₹2 crore.

They do not have to travel anywhere. The entire game will happen inside their house.

Cameras, speakers and other equipment are installed around their property. Yellow and red boundary lines are marked outside, and they are warned not to cross the red line while the game is active.

There is also a red button that can be used to quit—but both players must agree to press it together.

That rule becomes extremely important later.

The First Stage Makes the Game Look Harmless

Initially, the challenges seem innocent.

Arjun and Meera complete simple activities involving balloons and balls. Then the game begins targeting the thing that matters most to them: social media.

They have to upload Instagram reels and achieve a required number of likes within a short time.

Meera posts a much bolder video than usual, while Arjun attempts a rooftop challenge.

They succeed.

The game rewards them with ₹1,17,000, and when they question whether the money is real, a bag containing the cash is delivered to their doorstep.

This is the moment the game truly hooks them.

Arjun realizes that if they continue winning, they may quickly make the ₹20 lakh they desperately need.

What he does not realize—or chooses to ignore—is that the person controlling the game can hear almost everything happening inside their house.

The game now understands exactly what motivates them.

Money.

Stage Two Turns Arjun and Meera Against Each Other

The next stage changes the rules.

Arjun and Meera receive separate tasks through earbuds, and neither is allowed to reveal their challenge to the other.

This means one person can unknowingly destroy the other person's task.

When Meera's mother visits, Meera is told to prepare sambar rice for her and feed it to her within a fixed time. She even places ₹3 lakh at risk on the challenge.

It appears simple.

But suddenly, Meera's mother receives news that her husband has been injured and needs medical attention. Distressed, she immediately leaves.

Meera later learns something disturbing.

Arjun's challenge was to get her mother out of the house within ten minutes.

The emergency was part of his strategy.

Meera is furious because her mother has heart problems and could have been seriously affected by such frightening news.

This reveals the real structure of the game.

The challenges are not merely about winning.

They are designed to create conflict between the players.

Arjun Hides the Return of Their YouTube Channel

Another major betrayal occurs when Arjun discovers that their original three-million-subscriber YouTube channel has been restored.

This should solve a huge part of their financial crisis.

Instead of immediately telling Meera, however, Arjun hides the news.

He wants to continue playing until they win enough money.

He even deactivates the restored channel again.

The decision becomes even worse when Meera receives a challenge requiring her to upload a video to their old channel. Because she believes the channel is still gone, she loses money.

Only then does Arjun admit what he has done.

At this point, the movie makes something clear: the mysterious game may be manipulating the couple, but greed is also exposing problems that already existed between them.

Meera's Pregnancy Shows How Deep the Paranoia Has Become

On Arjun's birthday, Meera gives him surprising news.

She is pregnant.

They have apparently been trying to have a child for years, so this should be one of the happiest moments of their lives.

Instead, Arjun immediately suspects that the pregnancy announcement could be another game challenge.

That reaction devastates Meera.

Eventually, Arjun realizes she is telling the truth, apologizes and gives her his mother's chain.

For a brief moment, it seems their relationship may recover.

But the game has already planted something much more dangerous between them: permanent suspicion.

Neither person can now tell when the other is being sincere and when they are completing a secret task.

The Game Is Actually Entertainment for Hidden Investors

Arjun eventually asks the mysterious controller why anyone would pay them huge amounts of money for strange challenges.

The answer reveals the disturbing purpose of the entire operation.

Unknown investors are betting on how Arjun and Meera will react in specific situations.

The contestants' emotions, relationships and decisions are effectively being turned into gambling opportunities.

Even the tasks can apparently be influenced by the situations developing around them.

Arjun and Meera are no longer simply playing a game.

Their private lives have become entertainment.

Meera Tricks Arjun Into Pressing the Red Button

As the psychological pressure increases, Meera tells Arjun they should quit.

She argues that the game is controlling their minds and could eventually force them to do anything.

Arjun finally agrees.

He presses the red button.

But instead of ending the nightmare, the controller congratulates Meera.

Making Arjun press the button was her challenge.

Arjun feels emotionally betrayed because Meera used genuine concerns about their marriage and safety to manipulate him into completing her task.

From this point onward, even honest emotions become impossible to trust.

The Past-Secrets Round Completely Destroys Their Relationship

The third stage focuses on their past.

Arjun and Meera are asked questions designed to test how well they actually know each other.

One question leads Arjun toward a secret Meera had never revealed.

While speaking with one of her friends, Arjun discovers that Meera had previously undergone an abortion.

The revelation shocks him.

Meera explains that she wanted to tell him but never found the courage.

Instead of responding calmly, Arjun becomes increasingly angry.

Their relationship becomes so damaged that during another confrontation he pushes Meera underwater in a bathtub before she manages to escape.

When she asks whether that was another challenge, Arjun refuses to give her a clear answer.

That uncertainty may be more frightening than the act itself.

The game has created a world in which violence, manipulation and genuine emotion have become indistinguishable.

The movie's source story follows this escalation from the couple's obsession with views through the secret challenges and eventual breakdown of their marriage.

Arul Arrives and the Game Becomes Even Darker

Eventually, Arjun and Meera try to stop playing.

But their financial problems remain.

Then Arjun's relative Arul arrives asking for ₹15 lakh because his child needs an operation. In return, he offers Arjun a diamond necklace.

Soon afterward, the mysterious gamer offers Arjun another chance.

This time the prize could reach ₹2 crore in only two days.

The condition is simple: Arul must remain inside their house until the specified time without discovering the existence of the game.

Arjun agrees.

And this begins the darkest part of Trending.

Arjun Is Ordered to Make Arul Cry

One challenge requires Arjun to make Arul cry within an hour.

He eventually accomplishes it by arranging a video call involving Arul's hospitalized child.

Seeing his child causes Arul to become emotional.

Arjun wins the challenge, but even he begins feeling guilty.

He promises Meera that once they receive the money, they will use some of it to help pay for Arul's child's treatment.

But the game continues pushing everyone further.

The Diamond Necklace Is Replaced

During the night, Meera receives a secret task involving Arul's diamond-necklace bag.

She hides it on the rooftop.

Then Arjun receives another task instructing him to find the hidden bag and replace the necklace box.

Neither fully understands what the other is doing.

The controller is once again carefully arranging events so that future conflict becomes almost inevitable.

The Seduction Challenge Causes Another Explosion

Then comes one of the most destructive challenges.

Meera is ordered to attract Arul, while Arjun must cooperate with the setup.

Initially both refuse, but the promise of money eventually convinces them.

Arjun drinks with Arul and helps create the opportunity. Meera then enters and performs her part of the challenge.

She succeeds.

But immediately afterward, Arjun becomes jealous.

Even though he helped arrange the situation, he accuses Meera of being attracted to Arul.

Their argument becomes loud enough for Arul to hear.

And that confrontation reveals another enormous secret.

Arjun Was Responsible for Meera and Varun's Breakup

Before Arjun, Meera had been in a relationship with a man named Varun.

Arjun was also in love with her.

According to Arul's revelation, Arjun deliberately helped engineer the destruction of Meera and Varun's relationship so that he could eventually be with her.

Arjun arranged circumstances involving another woman and Varun and helped trigger a police raid that ultimately led to Meera and Varun breaking up.

Arul had helped Arjun with the plan.

For Meera, this revelation changes everything.

Her past heartbreak was not simply bad luck.

Arjun had manipulated her life long before the mysterious reality game ever began.

Even worse, Meera connects those events to the abortion and reproductive problems she later experienced.

Arjun claims he never knew she was pregnant and insists that he acted because he loved her.

But for Meera, that explanation cannot erase what happened.

Arul's Death Reveals the Biggest Twist

Meera tells Arul where his necklace bag was hidden.

They go to the rooftop and open it.

The diamond necklace is gone.

Instead, there is a gun.

Arul points the weapon at Arjun.

Then, overwhelmed by his situation and his inability to help his child, Arul turns the gun on himself.

But the gun does not contain a bullet.

Still desperate, Arul jumps from the rooftop and dies.

Then comes the movie's biggest twist.

Arul is wearing the same type of earpiece used by Arjun and Meera.

Arul was also a player in the game.

Trending Ending Explained: Was Arul Part of the Same Game?

Yes.

The ending reveals that Arul had previously been participating in the mysterious game with his wife.

During one of their challenges, they were required to cover their faces with plastic for a fixed period.

The task went horribly wrong, and Arul's wife died.

Instead of allowing Arul to simply leave, the controller offered him another “lifeline.”

His next mission was to take the diamond necklace to Arjun and sell it to him for ₹15 lakh at a very specific time.

This completely changes our understanding of Arul's arrival.

He did not randomly appear at Arjun's home looking for money.

His presence was engineered by the game.

Why Did Arjun and Meera Have to Keep Arul Inside Until 6 PM?

This detail exposes how carefully the mysterious controller designed the entire situation.

Arul was reportedly instructed to complete his necklace-related mission around 5:55 p.m.

Meanwhile, Arjun and Meera were required to keep him inside their house until around 6 p.m.

The tasks were deliberately connected.

The game was essentially placing different players on intersecting paths without necessarily telling them that the other people were also contestants.

That explains many of the strange coincidences throughout the movie.

The controller is not reacting randomly.

It is building situations in which one person's challenge creates another person's crisis.

Did Arjun and Meera Win the Game?

Technically, yes.

After Arul's death, Arjun and Meera receive the money they earned from the game.

They then use part of it to help pay for the treatment of Arul's child.

Financially, they have achieved what they wanted.

But emotionally, they have lost almost everything.

The price of winning was their relationship.

Why Does Meera Divorce Arjun at the End?

At the beginning of Trending, Arjun wanted to create a fake divorce storyline because he believed relationship drama could generate views.

By the end, that fake idea becomes reality.

Meera decides to genuinely divorce Arjun.

Her decision is not caused by a single challenge.

Throughout the game she discovers that Arjun hid important information from her, manipulated situations for money, became dangerously jealous and, most importantly, had secretly interfered with her relationship with Varun years earlier.

The game did not simply destroy their marriage.

It revealed what was already hidden inside it.

And in one final piece of irony, news of Arjun and Meera's real divorce becomes viral across the internet.

They finally become “trending” again—but because their relationship has collapsed.

What Does the Ending of Trending Really Mean?

The ending gives the movie's title a darker meaning.

Arjun and Meera spend their lives chasing subscribers, likes, money and viral attention. Their identity as a couple becomes increasingly connected to how strangers react to them online.

Then they enter a game that takes the same concept to its logical extreme.

Their private arguments become entertainment.

Their jealousy becomes entertainment.

Their secrets become entertainment.

Their suffering becomes something strangers can bet money on.

Eventually, even death becomes part of the game.

The final irony is powerful: Arjun and Meera originally consider staging a divorce to create successful content, but after chasing money and attention through the reality game, they destroy enough trust that the divorce becomes real.

The internet gets the dramatic story it wants.

Arjun and Meera get attention again.

But the relationship behind that content no longer exists.

Trending ultimately turns the obsession with going viral into a psychological trap: once every moment of life becomes content, people may stop knowing where the performance ends and reality begins.
