I don’t care what anyone says...I wish it was Christmas today! And every day.

I’m writing this in 2020, so as you surely can understand, I simply cannot wait for Santa to come and bring us some joy. We deserve it.

To get you in the festive spirit, and help you escape any difficult situation you may find yourself in, I’ve put together this list of Christmas movies you should definitely watch this year.

Enjoy!

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

We have to start with this one, because what a nightmare before Christmas this year has been! In 2020, we actually may have to get out of our own scary Halloween Town like Jack Skellington did in the movie, to be able to enjoy a little break. The contrast of the two worlds will be apparent in our own life as well, and the story so relatable.

So, if you are not totally convinced that Christmas will cheer you up after the emotional rollercoaster this year has been, maybe this dark-humoured animated fantasy film is exactly what you need.

2. The Grinch (2018)

I watched this new adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Benedict Cumberbatch last year, and I loved it. It’s cute, funny, and the soundtrack is just delicious. It will definitely stay on my Christmas watchlist this holiday season.

3. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)

Another new take on a Christmas classic, this Disney fantasy sparks joy and transports you into a spectacular world of adventure and magic. I really appreciate the strong female characters we can see in this film, as well as a bit of diversity at last.

4. In Bruges (2008)

The picturesque Belgian town of Bruges is the perfect place to go on a romantic Christmas getaway, or at least it used to be in those times when we still could travel. The iconic gangster movie set in it, however, is far from what you would want to experience on your holiday break. I’d gladly watch this dark comedy with moody atmosphere and legendary dialogues any time of year, but I think this Christmas it will be yet another great juxtaposition we can relate to.

5. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)

This is the ultimate escapist movie we can all use this year. It will transport us to the time of our carefree childhoods when everything was much simpler, and J. K. Rowling was still just an innocent author of children’s fiction. Even the soundtrack to this movie itself is so Christmassy, and Christmas celebrations at Hogwarts are epic.

6. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

This movie will transport you to a time when Johnny Depp was just an innocent drug user. (Sorry.)

Again, it is not so obviously Christmassy, but I feel we possibly cannot have enough Tim Burton this year, since it all has been so spooky. And I hope it snows this Christmas.

7. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Put your best Christmas jumper on and watch this legendary rom-com. Let’s see how far feminism has got since this movie was shot. (I’m not sure it’s far enough.)

8. Home Alone (1990)

Nope, we are not going to leave this one out.

It's a classic. But do you see how accurate it is this year? When we are all literally trapped in our homes. Alone.

Plus, Macaulay Culkin turned 40 this year, so let’s celebrate!

9. Hogfather (2006)

This geeky TV adaptation of a Discworld novel tells an alternative Christmas story from a parallel universe of Terry Pratchett’s imagination. It’s good to be transported to a different world for a bit sometimes, to be able to make fun of our own.

As Death, my favourite character of the series, says: “Humans need fantasy to be human.”

10. A Christmas Carol (2009)

I saved the best for last. This is my favourite Christmas movie ever.

Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol may as well be the foundation of Christmas as we know it. And this animated adaptation with Jim Carrey truly does it justice. The traditional Victorian ghost story perfectly fits this year’s theme of spooky Christmas, but it also reminds us of something really important. Now more than ever, we should all look out for each other with compassion and empathy and help one another overcome these troubled times.

Keep Christmas in your heart. Always.
