Top 10: Annoying Female Characters in Anime

Let's see who made the Annoying list this time!

I thought I'd do annoying characters lists for anime characters and initially I was going to start with female characters because ladies first and all that jazz. Unfortunately, however, I underestimated the task at hand and couldn't put a list together - too many names to choose from. So I did male characters first and now I think I've got some names for the ladies!

Let's get into it!

Number 10: Louise de la Valliere - Zero no Tsukaima

Louise the Zero (Ms en Scene)

Louise Francoise le Blanc de la Valliere (man, that's a mouthful) is the leading lady of Zero no Tsukaima. She's a student at the Tristain Academy of Magic and has the nickname of 'Louise the Zero' because she has a 0% success rate with magic.

The most annoying thing about this character is primarily the initial stuck-up attitude she gives. With that said, she's at the very bottom of the list because she just doesn't quit. She keeps going regardless of the difficulties she faces and I have to admire that kind of determination.

I've seen a lot of people call her relationship with the series' main character Saito toxic or abusive and I can certainly see where they're coming from. At the same time, the relationship does get better as the series progresses.

Number 9: Yukari Sendou - Rosario + Vampire

Child Prodigy with a mischievous streak... (MyAnimeList)

Yukari Sendou is a child-prodigy and a witch who skipped a few grades at Yokai Academy and has a reputation as a troublemaker. She's introduced early on in the series and makes trouble for main character Tsukune Aono.

Much like Louise, Yukari is lower down on the list because despite the occasional lapse in judgement and childish behavior that she exhibits; she, as a character, improves a lot as the series progresses. She becomes more useful and more likable.

Number 8: Tea Gardner - Yu-Gi-Oh!

Miss Tea 'Friendship Speeches' Gardner (Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia)

Tea Gardner or, if you prefer, Anzu Masaki is the best friend of Yugi Mutou and is there to show support for him whenever needed. She's a likable character and I get what the writer was going for but sheesh, lay off on the friendship speeches will ya?

I'm not kidding about the speeches. She's always ready with words of encouragement or some sort of speech about the power of friendship. Trust me after a few episodes it gets pretty irritating.

Number 7: Chihiro/Sen - Spirited Away

Run Sen Run! (European Film Awards)

Chihiro is a character that I debated long and hard about putting on this list because she's not all that annoying after the first 20 or 30 minutes when she's stuck in a supernatural realm and has to survive.

Still, she does have a few instances of sheer clumsiness and lapses in judgement (i.e. unwittingly inviting a man-eating...thing into the spirit's bathhouse) but it's nothing too egregious to land her higher than 7 on the list.

Number 6: Amy - Burst Angel

Fiendishly intelligent and irritatingly childish (IMDB)

I haven't seen Burst Angel in a while so I can't remember it too well. Amy was the mercenary group's info specialist - another child prodigy. She's mostly harmless but she's also known to be more than a little immature and her actions have the potential to endanger her friends and innocents alike.

For all her immaturity, however, this little girl is fiendishly intelligent and not above using subterfuge to get her way. Annoying as she is, one has to respect that kind of spirit.

Number 5: Misa Amane - Death Note

Cute but clingy... (Death Note Wiki)

Misa Amane is another character that I had to debate putting on the list - though not quite as hard as I had to when putting Chihiro on the list. The reason for that is pretty simple: I'm not sure what to make of her. On one hand, she's a total ditz with a serious obsession with Light Yagami - willing to do anything to be his girlfriend...yes, really.

On the other hand, Light takes the fact that Misa is in love with him and uses it to manipulate her into doing his dirty work. The sad part is that at one point, she acknowledges that she's being used. It's like she knows what's happening but is absolutely powerless to stop it. Now obviously, all she has to do is leave; right? Except that Light is the one that she's in love with and he knows exactly what to say and/or do to keep her under his control.

With all that said, her ditzy nature and manner of speech as well as her absolute craziness for Light...and I just realized how that sounds - is enough to drive anyone with a brain completely bonkers.

Number 4: Kyoko Kirisaki - Black Cat

This girl...I think Train's expression says it all! (Tumbral)

Cute and clingy. Those are the two words that I can use to best describe the character of Kyoko Kirisaki. She has a serious crush on Train Heartnet and is a little bit temperamental at times.

Overall, she's not too bad as a character but she's just so irritating when she's onscreen! Every time I saw her I had to take a deep breath and console myself that she'd end up kissing a cat at some point in time. The worst part is that it's not even the character herself but more what the anime adaptation DID to her!

Yes, she was cute and clingy in the manga too but she was also fiendishly intelligent, ridiculously strong and had far more personality than what was shown in the anime! She had her fair share of dark moments in the manga whereas in the anime she was all sunshine and rainbows most of the time which irritated me because those darker moments were the points where her character grew the most.

Number 3: Angel - Angel Cop

Why's she pouting? (Emblems for Battlefield)

Okay, so Angel is an interesting character for the list because depending on which version of the series you saw she may be more or less annoying. In the English version she's a heartless killing machine for most of the run time until suddenly developing a conscience towards the end of the series.

I'm going to highlight a scene real quick: her partner Raiden asks her a question: if a child were taken hostage by a terrorist, what would you do?

In both versions she replies that she'd take the shot but the difference lies in the reasoning behind her decision. In the English version, she says something about it not being her fault that the kid got caught in the crossfire and therefore not her problem. In the Japanese version she actually explains that she'd take the shot because she may not get the chance to do it later; which makes sense...sort of.

While the Japanese version of Angel is shown to have at least a little bit of depth to her, the English version is a flat, foul-mouthed, killer who doesn't care one way or the other about getting innocent people injured or killed - until her last minute personality switch at the end of the series, of course.

Number 2: Pinoko - Black Jack

Spritle 2.0 (Absolute Anime)

Pinoko is the titular doctor Black Jack's faithful sidekick - she's basically the Spritle Racer of the series. If you saw my previous list on annoying male characters; you'll know that Pinoko being the Spritle equivalent here isn't too good.

Like Amy from Burst Angel, Pinoko is mostly harmless; popping in every now and then to give support and/or assistance to the titular doctor. She even has key roles in some episodes which is fine. What isn't fine is that when she's not playing a key role or assisting Black Jack in his work; she's driving me nuts!

Argh! I know it's not the intention of the performer to irritate the viewer but that voice just...after a while it grates on my nerves. The immature outbursts don't help things either!

Number 1: Asuka Langley Soryu - Neon Genesis Evangelion

Hotheaded and stubborn (SUMOverse Wiki)

I almost put Rei Ayanami on this list! I changed my mind though when I found that Asuka annoyed me even more!

Asuka is the typical spoiled, pretty girl that everyone in school goes gaga for and she knows it. She's cocky, arrogant, and so full of herself that it's not even funny. Now, for those of you thinking that's all an act: you're at least halfway right. She is a very insecure girl and when you know her past it's easy to understand why. She's got the skills but is impatient and easily frustrated. Unfortunately she takes out her frustrations on fellow protagonist Shinji Ikari.

The term 'toxic' was used to describe her and Shinji's relationship and, frankly, I think I'm going to have to agree here. I said it with the last list: a bad past doesn't give you the right to be jerk to everyone around you. Thankfully, however, the Rebuild of Evangelion films have toned down the more negative aspects of Asuka's character; she's still cocky and arrogant, and she still lashes out primarily at Shinji but it's nowhere close to as bad is it was in the original series.
