Thudakkam Movie Review: Vismaya Mohanlal Makes a Powerful Debut in a Gripping Survival Thriller

Malayalam cinema has once again entered the thriller space with Thudakkam, a film that has attracted plenty of attention even before its theatrical release. The biggest reason is Vismaya Mohanlal, daughter of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, making her acting debut with the movie.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, Thudakkam was released in theatres on August 7, 2026. The film runs for around 2 hours and 19 minutes and combines family drama, survival, action and thriller elements.

But the biggest question is obvious: Does Vismaya Mohanlal manage to make an impact in her very first film?

More importantly, does Thudakkam offer the kind of suspense Malayalam thriller fans have come to expect from films associated with the Mohanlal name?

What Is Thudakkam About?

The story revolves around Meenu, played by Vismaya Mohanlal, who lives a peaceful life with her father in the high ranges of Kerala. Sai Kumar plays her father, and the early portion of the movie spends considerable time establishing their relationship.

Everything initially feels like a simple family drama.

However, Meenu soon finds herself caught in a dangerous situation that completely changes the direction of her life. What follows is a desperate fight for survival as the movie gradually moves into much darker territory.

This is where Thudakkam begins revealing its thriller side.

Instead of giving away every mystery immediately, the film takes its time before shifting gears.

The First Half May Test Your Patience

Thudakkam is definitely not a movie that starts with nonstop twists and action.

The first half concentrates heavily on its characters and emotional setup. Because of that, viewers expecting a fast-paced crime thriller from the opening scene may find the beginning slightly slow.

At times you may even wonder where the story is actually going.

But this slow setup becomes important once the second half begins.

The movie suddenly changes its rhythm and starts introducing danger, action, mystery and survival elements much more aggressively.

That transition is easily one of the most interesting things about Thudakkam.

Second Half Is Where Thudakkam Becomes Exciting

The second half is considerably stronger.

The tension increases, Vismaya's character gets much more to do and the movie begins moving towards the thriller experience promised by its trailer.

There are confrontations, action sequences and situations where Meenu has to depend on her own courage and physical ability to survive.

Vismaya looks particularly comfortable during the action portions.

Filmfare's review also highlighted her physical performance and action scenes as some of the strongest parts of her debut.

And that is important because Thudakkam puts a lot of responsibility on a first-time lead actor.

Vismaya Mohanlal Makes a Promising Debut

Being Mohanlal's daughter automatically creates enormous expectations.

Comparisons are unavoidable.

However, Vismaya does not appear to be trying to imitate her father. Instead, she approaches Meenu as a physically strong but vulnerable young woman placed in an increasingly dangerous situation.

For a debut performance, she handles the demanding action sequences confidently.

There are certainly areas where she can improve as an actor, especially in some of the heavier dramatic moments, but Thudakkam gives her enough opportunities to establish her screen presence.

Critical reception to the film itself has been mixed, but even reviews that criticised the screenplay have acknowledged Vismaya's potential, particularly in the action sequences.

For a first movie, this is definitely a promising beginning.

Mohanlal's Cameo

And yes, Mohanlal is also part of Thudakkam.

His appearance was already teased through the movie's promotional material and trailer, so mentioning it isn't really a spoiler. The trailer itself revealed a glimpse of Mohanlal before the movie's theatrical release.

Naturally, seeing Mohanlal and Vismaya connected within the same film makes Thudakkam even more special for fans.

However, viewers should not go into the movie expecting Mohanlal to be the main character.

This is primarily Vismaya Mohanlal's film.

Does It Feel Like Drishyam or Thudarum?

If you love Malayalam thrillers such as Drishyam or Thudarum, Thudakkam may appeal to you because it also uses a relatively calm beginning before moving towards darker and more intense events.

That does not mean Thudakkam is another Drishyam.

The storytelling style and central conflict are different.

But the idea of allowing the story to build slowly before raising the stakes makes the comparison understandable.

The film works better when viewed as a survival-action thriller rather than expecting a complicated mystery with a new twist every few minutes.

Thudakkam Box Office Opening

Thudakkam also received a respectable start commercially.

Early estimates reported approximately ₹2.40 crore India net on its opening day, giving Vismaya Mohanlal's debut a decent theatrical beginning.

It will be interesting to see whether positive word of mouth around Vismaya's performance helps the film maintain momentum over its theatrical run.

Thudakkam OTT Release

Many Hindi-speaking viewers will naturally be waiting for the movie's digital release.

However, as of now, an official OTT platform and streaming release date have not been reliably confirmed. Some online speculation may suggest different platforms, but current listings still show the OTT details as TBA.

So it would be better to wait for an official announcement before assuming that Thudakkam will stream on JioHotstar or any other particular service.

A Hindi dubbed version would certainly help the movie reach a much wider audience if one is released later.

Should You Watch Thudakkam?

If you enjoy Malayalam survival thrillers, father-daughter emotional stories and movies that become more intense after a slow setup, Thudakkam is worth trying.

The first half may feel slower than expected, but the second half provides much more action and tension.

The biggest attraction remains Vismaya Mohanlal.

She enters the industry carrying one of Malayalam cinema's most famous surnames, but Thudakkam gives her enough room to create an identity of her own.

It may not be a flawless thriller, but as the beginning of Vismaya Mohanlal's acting journey, it is certainly an interesting one.
