An Intriguing detective Thriller That keeps You on your Toes

Story Line

Ha Young is a criminal behavioural analyst. He looks cold on the outside but, he knows how to understand and see through people better than anyone else. He decides to become a criminal profiler who always puts the victims and their families first and takes full responsibility for them to the end. Young Soo is the team leader of the Criminal Behavioural Analysis Team, and he acts as a headman of the National Forensic Service, who knows what true authority is. He realizes the importance of criminal psychology from the beginning, and therefore, he establishes the Criminal Behavioural Analysis Team with Ha Young. As predicted, hideous murder cases with no motive occur in a row, and finally, the need for the Criminal Behavioural Analysis Team begins to emerge.

Performance

The casting choice was fantastic. It's is one thing to choose the right actor & actress for the right role, but it is even more important for the actor to absorb the character and perform in the most plausible style and retain that tone throughout the course of the show. The lead trio has been phenomenal and I loved Ha-Young so much that I couldn't tell if he's acting or just being himself.

The Outstanding Teleplay

The TV script for this show was a step above excellence. I wouldn't call this a Korean remake of Mindhunter despite the show making a direct reference to the book . I'd rather say that this is another detective show set in the similar theme as Mindhunter while bringing in the real life events from its own world. It needs a massive skill and talent to make a TV show of such quality, especially when it comes to adjusting the tone of the show to cater to its own audience and the overall appeal to the international audience who should be able to empathize and sympathize with the characters. And I gotta say, the show got really addictive after a point and that's only coz of its spectacular teleplay.

The Captivating drama

While the show doesn't have a menacing character like Ed Kemper or Charles Manson, It's got its own share of notorious criminals with a sick motive. The dialogues were spot on and the conversations with murderers were remarkable. The creators used the internal politics of the department and the supporting character's back story as another subplot to the show so that we're not overwhelmed by the dark tone of the show. The drama never ends. There's always something happening and not a single episode felt like a filler. The crime inspections and the investigations were so gripping and organic that it transports us to the real world of darkness.

The Real Life events:

One of the best things about this show is how it brilliantly encompasses around the real life events (including the one that we saw in Memories of Murder and I screamed when they showed that scene) and turns into a completely compelling documentary styled exposé. The research the makers have put into this show when it comes to the attention to detail, is mind blowing. There were so many thought provoking segments in the show and my favourite part is when Song interviews the killers.

The Nail Biting Tension

The tension this show creates right from its first episode is so impressive. The puzzling mystery glues you to your TV screen and I was surprised when every episode had similar tone, theme and tempo that kept me engrossed. The anxiety of whether they're gonna catch killer and whether they can implicate the criminal will keep you intrigued until the end. Everything about this show is by the book and I absolutely loved it's undiluted focus.

Production design

Right from period specific set pieces to the costumes to the artwork, the production design of this show was top notch. That's not surprising coz K-dramas are known for the efforts the makers put in to the creative and technical aspects of their TV shows. It added a lot to the overall look and appeal of the series. The music was outstanding. The original score especially during the chases or during the investigations was truly outstanding.

OverAll

Trailing on the path laid down by the Netflix blockbuster TV show Mind hunter, Through the Darkness is yet another nail-biting detective thriller that pushes you to the edge of your seat, just as exhilaratingly as the former. With an amazing narrative structure and interesting demonstration of real life crimes this a perfect binge material. And I'd rate this show a neat 90%
