Thor’s Magic Belt: Stormbreaker Might Not Just Be the Only Weapon to Look out for in 'Avengers 4'

Although Thor: Ragnarok did mock Thor for recognizing himself as the strongest Avenger, Avengers: Infinity War removed all doubts as to his capabilities. One might even consider the God of Thunder as the strongest indeed yet (We know Captain Marvel is a strong contender).

Stormbreaker, Thor’s new weapon, increased his powers to a stage which tipped the battle at Wakanda in their favor. Now, what if I said that what we witnessed in Avengers: Infinity War was only a half powered Thor? What if I said that Stormbreaker isn’t the only weapon we might see Thor using when he goes all out at Thanos?

Spiderman: Homecoming was a treasure trove for all Marvel geeks out there as it hosted a lot of Easter Eggs. The coolest, however, was the one when Happy Hogan mentioned some of the gadgets they were transporting to the new Avengers facility upstate. He mentioned Tony’s old Hulkbuster armor, a prototype of Captain’s new shield and Thor’s magic belt, Megingjörð (which he couldn’t pronounce correctly).

References in the Comics

Megingjörð is the legendary belt of strength owned by Thor and is believed to double his strength when worn. It was generally kept in Asgard, protected by Odin when Thor didn’t wear it.

In the comics, Thor used it for a handful of times to get out of a patchy situation. He used it while fighting the magician, Sandu. Sandu was manipulated by Loki in the comics. Thor also wore Megingjörð to increase the strength of the blast from Mjolnir. The combined blast of power was required to penetrate the armor of the Celestial Exilar. He also wore it when Kurse was being strengthened by the Beyonder.

However, the most important reference is perhaps when Thor used it, coupled with a shield and a gauntlet, to finally defeat Thanos in the comics. This might be a subtle hint that we will see Thor using Megingjörð in Avengers 4.

References in the MCU

So far, there hasn’t been many revelations regarding Megingjörð. It can be assumed, however, that when Thor left Earth in search of knowledge regarding the Infinity Stones after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, he left his belt for safekeeping with Tony Stark. Now, why would he leave his magic belt if he knew he was going to face a supervillain like Surtur and possibly, Ragnarok? The fact is, he didn’t. He didn’t know anything about his sister until Odin disclosed it. Regarding Surtur, he might have been confident enough to go lashing out at him even without his full arsenal. He is the God of Thunder, after all.

We can, however, assume that Tony probably did some research on the belt considering his heightened curiosity for anything out of the box. He did the same on Loki’s scepter. He probably didn’t make the most out of it or was perhaps unaware of its capabilities. This was probably why he left it to be transported in a cargo plane along with other gadgets instead of taking it personally.

Why didn’t Thor wear the belt in 'Infinity War?'

We have to consider that the events of Avengers: Infinity War unfurled all of a sudden. None of the Avengers had time to prepare for the destruction headed their way. The only people who even knew about Thanos before were the Guardians of the Galaxy. Coming back to Thor, he didn’t return to Earth after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. He was scouring the universe to learn more about the Infinity Stones and was then involved in the legendary fight with Surtur and his sister, Hela (Thor: Ragnarok).

He returned to Earth through the Bifrost directly from Nidavellir. He was then was involved in the battle at Wakanda and with Thanos, himself. So, basically, he didn’t have time to go looking for his belt with the matters at hand. Also, Tony, who knew about the belt, was off fighting at Titan along with the other members. So, he wouldn’t have known if Thor had arrived on Earth.

However, there is enough reason to believe that Thor will wield Megingjörð in Avengers 4, when the heroes unite to take down Thanos. This time they will be prepared and wouldn’t dare underestimate the Mad Titan like they did. Thanos really has his bad days coming if Thor decides to use Megingjörð along with Stormbreaker.
