The trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 has just dropped. Gal Gadot herself dropped a short teaser yesterday.

In short it's spectacular.

Wonder Woman 1984 has become one of my most anticipated movies.

Which is funny as I was one of the people not excited for the first one.

Full Disclosure. Prior to her appearance in Batman V Superman, I was completely ambivalent to Wonder Woman’s place in the DC Extended Universe. I walked into Batman V Superman hoping for a big screen version of my action figure fantasies. All I wanted was to watch a man dressed as a flying rodent fight a space alien. I got that, with much more angst and murder than I would have liked.

The movie might not have been good, but it would serve as an overwrought two-hour trailer for a Wonder Woman movie in which I previously had no interest. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was my favorite part of that film and I have been looking forward to this movie for more than a year. And, I think it’s everything a comic book movie should be. It’s a war movie, but it is never mired down by taking itself too seriously, and in a departure from the rest of the movie universe it inhabits, it’s fun.

Patty Jenkins, best known before this for her movie Monster for which Charlize Theron won the Oscar for Best Actress, had an enormous task, and she needed to thread the needle in order to make this movie work. It was equal parts, fantasy epic, period piece, war movie, and comic book movie. She balances each of these movies with a deft hand, especially since there were not many examples of this type of movie.

Simply put, Gal Gadot nails this role as Diana of Themyscira. She is funny when she needs to be. She handles the action with aplomb, and she is everything Wonder Woman should be: strong, stoic, humble, kind, thoughtful, and most importantly, good. She has a natural charm on camera and it makes up for any tiny shortcoming in her range as an actress. It’s clear Gadot has fun in the role, and she has chemistry with everyone with whom she shares the screen.

Onto the trailer.

I just got done watching the official trailer on the Wonder Woman twitter account. Here, they were showing the footage from CCXP where Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins were presenting the trailer.

It was pretty awe inspiring. Gal Gadot rose from under the stage like a rock star to a massive applause.

Gal Gadot returns as demi-god Diana Prince. The world once again needing the daughter of Zeus.

But this time, we aren't in the trenches of World War 1 but in the 1980's. The time of big personalities and and even bigger hair.

It's action packed and looks like Jenkins again brings more deftly directed fight scenes.

Everything about this trailer works. It has a somber tone in the beginning which makes sense. Diana is immortal and now that she lives in the mortal world she has to watch her friends die. Everyone from the first movie could be gone at this point.

Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord is perfect.

Kristen Wiig's comedic timing is flawless and she looks to have excellent report with Gadot. This will make for a great arc as Wiig's character makes a turn.

And, we get Steve Trevor back from the grave. His chemistry with Gadot is as great as ever.

There looks to be several action pieces one of which reveals the golden costume, which Gadot rocks in a way only she could.

The whole trailer brings the 80's vibe and the synthetic electro-pop in the background cements it as a period piece.

They blend great fight choreography with some comic book goodness. such as ejecting a bullet and then smacking it in midair.

Also, there's a scene where Wonder Woman (possibly aided by her father Zues?) lassoes a lightning bold.

I repeat. Wonder Woman lassoes lightning. This is going to be epic.

I can't wait.

You can watch the trailer here.
