The Snow Girl, (aka La chica de nieve), is a Spanish crime thriller that stars Milena Smit as Miren Rojo, Aixa Villagrán as Belén Millán, José Coronado as Eduardo, along with Loreto Mauleón and Raúl Prieto. It is based on Javier Castillo’s novel of the same name. The Netflix series is directed by David Ulloa and Laura Alvea, and the screenplay is by Jesús Mesas and Javier Andrés Roig. There are 6 episodes of approximately 45 minutes.

The series is dubbed in English and also has English subtitles. The synopsis reads, “When a little girl goes missing during a parade in Málaga, a young newspaper journalist becomes fiercely determined to help Amaya’s parents find her.”

Five-year-old Amaya disappears during a Christmas parade in Málaga and the case catches the attention of Miren, an intern at the local newspaper.

In 2016, six years after Amaya vanished, a mysterious video reopens the case. In 2010, the police investigate a family friend with a suspicious past.

The crime drama becomes a trigger watch with the subplot of Miren’s past. She had been through horrific experiences before she became a journalist. Hence, she is profoundly dedicated and worried for Amaya much more than others.

Diario Sur publishes the video of Amaya after Miren strikes a deal with Millán, leading to a flood of new tips and a potential suspect.

James Foster gives Miren disturbing information that opens up a new line of inquiry. In 2019, a second video appears, making Ana fear the worst.

While The Snow Girl may not be a groundbreaking tale, it is a solid watch thanks to the contrasting approaches of Miren and Belen as they navigate the case at hand. The series maintains a consistently unsettling atmosphere and throws in unexpected twists that keep the viewer engaged. If you're looking for a crime drama with an edge, The Snow Girl on Netflix is worth checking out.

The past nine years look very different from the perspective of Amaya's kidnappers. And as the search intensifies, they grow increasingly desperate.

Miren herself becomes a target of suspicion but refuses to give up on the search for Amaya, even when it takes her into serious danger.

Flaws in an Otherwise Solid Series

While The Snow Girl has its strong points, it is not without its flaws. From my experience watching Spanish shows over the past three years, I've noticed a tendency to overdo certain elements. This is the case with The Snow Girl as well, where the number of time jumps and the emphasis on Miren's past become excessive and distracting. Despite this, the series remains a solid watch with engaging characters and unexpected twists.

Milena Smith, as Miren Rojo, has done a commendable job. Her character isn’t much of a talker, breaking the stereotypical portrayal of journalists in many movies and shows. She isn’t always the ray of hope we look for in such dark stories. Aixa Villagran’s cop character Belén Millán is an apt contrast to show how two people act differently towards the same situation. However, in the last 3 episodes, Belén appears as a forgetful side character.

Final Thoughts

The Snow Girl: A Disturbing Crime Drama

This Spanish series takes you on a journey filled with mystery and unpredictability, leaving you on the edge of your seat until the very end. While the story may be disturbing and devoid of hope for the characters, it will keep you hooked from start to finish. This show is not for the faint of heart, as it delves into the darker aspects of crime and drama. However, for those who enjoy binge-worthy, unsettling dramas, The Snow Girl is definitely worth a watch. It should be noted that there are some time jumps that may be confusing, but they add to the overall suspense of the story.
