Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Silent Sea, including the mystery of lunar water, Luna 073, the Balhae Station disaster and the ending.

The Silent Sea begins with a frightening vision of the future. By the year 2075, Earth is facing a catastrophic water shortage. Clean drinking water has become more valuable than almost anything else, and governments have introduced a ranking system that decides how much water each citizen is allowed to receive.

Against this desperate background, scientists discover something extraordinary on the Moon: a mysterious substance that looks like ordinary water but behaves in a completely different way.

What initially appears to be humanity’s greatest hope soon becomes one of its most dangerous discoveries.

At the center of the mystery are Balhae Station, lunar water, a secret scientific project and a mysterious girl known as Luna 073.

Why the Mission Goes to Balhae Station

Five years before the main mission, a terrible disaster occurred at Balhae Station, a research facility built on the Moon.

The official explanation claimed that the station had suffered a deadly accident, with radiation contamination blamed for the deaths of the researchers inside.

But the real story was hidden.

Years later, Earth’s water crisis has become even worse. A new team is therefore sent to the abandoned station with one critical objective: recover the mysterious samples that were left behind.

Captain Han Yun-jae leads the mission, while scientist Song Ji-an joins the crew for a deeply personal reason.

Her sister had been one of the scientists working at Balhae Station and died during the disaster.

For Song, the journey is not simply another scientific assignment. It may finally reveal what happened to her sister.

The Mission Goes Wrong Before It Even Begins

The crew’s problems start before they reach the research base.

Their spacecraft suffers serious trouble during the Moon landing, damaging vital equipment and leaving them isolated from Earth.

They eventually make their way toward Balhae Station with limited oxygen and almost no outside assistance.

Once inside, however, they immediately notice something strange.

The station does not look like the site of a simple radiation accident.

There are bodies throughout the facility, but the evidence surrounding those deaths does not match the official story.

Some victims appear to have drowned.

That should be impossible.

They are inside a dry research facility on the Moon.

So where did all that water come from?

That question becomes the key to everything that follows.

The Horrifying Truth About Lunar Water

The samples the team has been ordered to recover contain what becomes known as lunar water.

At first, the substance appears harmless.

But Song eventually discovers its terrifying property.

When lunar water comes into contact with living biological material, including human blood, it begins multiplying at an extraordinary rate.

A tiny amount can quickly become an enormous quantity.

Inside a human body, the effect is horrifying.

The water continues multiplying until the victim’s body is overwhelmed. Instead of suffering from a normal infection, the person effectively begins drowning from inside their own body.

This explains the mysterious deaths inside Balhae Station.

It also explains why crew members exposed to even tiny droplets of the substance begin producing enormous quantities of water.

The discovery changes the entire meaning of the mission.

Lunar water could theoretically solve Earth’s water shortage because of its ability to multiply.

But without a way to control it, the same substance could become a biological disaster.

Humanity’s possible salvation and destruction are contained in the same sample.

The Balhae Station Disaster Was Covered Up

The deeper the team explores the facility, the more obvious it becomes that the official story about Balhae Station was false.

Restricted Level One areas contain evidence that ordinary workers were never supposed to see.

Some victims appear to have been trapped inside parts of the facility while they were still alive.

This suggests that the authorities were not simply dealing with an unexpected accident.

They were trying to contain a secret.

The supposed radiation leak helped hide what had actually happened.

Balhae Station was connected to dangerous experiments involving lunar water, and the people running the project were prepared to make sure the truth never reached Earth.

Who Is the Mysterious Girl?

As the crew searches the station, they realize they are not alone.

Something is moving through the ventilation system.

The mysterious figure is incredibly fast, extremely strong and knows Balhae Station better than any member of the new team.

Initially, the crew treats the unknown survivor as a dangerous creature.

Eventually, they discover that it is a young girl.

More importantly, she seems to be protecting the lunar water.

She does not simply attack people randomly. Her aggressive behavior is usually triggered when someone threatens her or attempts to take the samples she is guarding.

Song recognizes that pattern and begins treating her differently.

Rather than immediately attacking the girl, she tries to gain her trust.

That decision leads to one of the biggest revelations in The Silent Sea.

What Does Luna 073 Mean?

The girl is identified as Luna 073.

The number is not a random designation.

Secret records reveal that scientists at Balhae Station had moved far beyond ordinary laboratory testing.

Lunar water experiments were eventually conducted on genetically created human test subjects.

Those subjects were identified using Luna numbers.

Again and again, the experiments failed.

The test subjects died after exposure to lunar water.

But Luna 073 was different.

She survived.

Her body developed compatibility with the substance.

That makes Luna far more important than the lunar water samples themselves.

She may be the key to understanding how humans could survive exposure to lunar water.

Luna 073's Connection to Song Ji-an's Sister

The mystery becomes even more personal when Song discovers that Luna is connected to her dead sister.

Hidden records show that genetic material connected to Song's sister was used in the experiments.

This explains why the girl is tied so closely to the secret project and why Song's sister attempted to hide information before the Balhae disaster.

Song realizes that her sister had discovered how dangerous the project had become.

What began as a scientific effort to save humanity from a water crisis had turned into human experimentation.

Erasing or hiding the research data was therefore not simply an attempt to destroy scientific work.

It was an attempt to prevent the knowledge from being exploited.

Why Luna Can Survive Lunar Water

Normal humans cannot safely survive direct exposure to lunar water.

Luna can.

When she is injured, lunar water appears to interact with her body without producing the fatal reaction seen in other humans.

Instead, her wounds heal.

Her biological adaptation makes her unique.

Song later experiences another important clue after being bitten by Luna.

When Song is exposed to lunar water herself, she initially suffers symptoms similar to previous victims.

But unlike the others, she survives.

The implication is that something transferred from Luna may have protected her from the otherwise deadly effects of lunar water.

This makes Luna potentially the missing link between humanity and a substance that could otherwise be impossible to control.

The Traitor Inside the Mission

The situation becomes even more dangerous when the crew discovers that not everyone came to Balhae Station for the same reason.

A member of the team is secretly working for another organization that wants to obtain the lunar water.

The mission therefore turns into a struggle between several competing interests.

Some want the samples returned to the authorities.

Others want to steal them.

Song wants to uncover the truth.

And Luna simply wants to survive.

The traitor eventually steals a sample and attempts to take control of the station.

During the chaos, lunar water is released.

Because of its extraordinary ability to multiply, the situation quickly becomes uncontrollable.

Balhae Station begins filling with water.

The same substance humanity desperately needs on Earth is now destroying the people trying to escape with it.

Why the Government Wanted the Truth Buried

One of the darkest revelations is that the original Balhae Station disaster was not handled as a rescue mission in the way people had been led to believe.

The authorities understood how dangerous the lunar water project had become.

They also understood what would happen if the public discovered that secret experiments had been conducted on human clones.

Keeping the project hidden became more important than saving everyone involved.

The real horror of The Silent Sea is therefore not only lunar water.

It is what humans are willing to do when they believe a discovery is valuable enough.

The water crisis gives governments and organizations a powerful justification: if lunar water could save billions of people, how far should scientists be allowed to go?

The series never presents that question as simple.

Captain Han's Final Sacrifice Explained

As lunar water spreads through Balhae Station, escape becomes almost impossible.

The station's systems are failing, and the only way to prevent the massive flood from reaching the escaping survivors requires someone to remain behind.

Captain Han makes that choice.

He orders Song, Dr. Hong and Luna to escape while he stays behind to operate the gate.

For Captain Han, the decision is especially painful because his personal motivation for joining the mission was connected to his daughter.

Earth's water crisis was not an abstract problem to him.

Saving the mission offered hope for his own family.

Yet in the final moments, he chooses the lives of his remaining crew over his own chance of returning home.

His sacrifice transforms him from a commander determined to complete his orders into someone willing to challenge the consequences of those orders when human lives are at stake.

The Silent Sea Ending: Why Luna Walks on the Moon Without a Spacesuit

The most mysterious image in the ending comes after Song, Dr. Hong and Luna escape from Balhae Station.

Once outside, Luna does something that should be impossible.

She removes her protective equipment and steps onto the Moon's surface without the protection a normal human would require.

She appears capable of surviving the freezing, airless lunar environment.

This final revelation shows that Luna's adaptation goes far beyond simply surviving lunar water.

Her biology has fundamentally changed.

She may represent a new form of human adaptation capable of surviving conditions that would instantly kill an ordinary person.

That is why Luna is ultimately more valuable than any capsule of lunar water.

The sample can demonstrate what lunar water does.

Luna demonstrates what humanity could potentially become.

Is Lunar Water Humanity's Salvation or Destruction?

This is the central question behind the ending of The Silent Sea.

On one side, lunar water offers an almost unbelievable solution to Earth's greatest crisis.

If scientists could safely control its multiplication, a tiny quantity might theoretically produce enormous amounts of water.

For a planet suffering from extreme shortages, that discovery could change civilization.

But the risks are equally enormous.

The substance multiplies uncontrollably when it interacts with living organisms.

In the wrong environment, one leak could become catastrophic.

And if powerful governments or private organizations gained control of it, lunar water could become something far more dangerous than a source of drinking water.

Luna may provide the answer.

Her immunity suggests that biological compatibility with lunar water is possible.

But the horrific experiments used to create that compatibility reveal the moral cost of reaching that point.

What Luna 073 Really Represents

Luna is not simply the mysterious creature the crew discovers inside Balhae Station.

She represents the consequence of humanity trying to control nature at any cost.

Scientists wanted a solution to Earth's water crisis.

Authorities wanted control over that solution.

Secret organizations wanted possession of it.

But Luna was the person who had to suffer for those ambitions.

By the ending, the audience's perspective has completely changed.

At first, Luna appears to be the threat.

Later, we understand that she is actually one of the biggest victims of the entire project.

She attacks because she has learned to defend herself and the only thing connected to the world she understands.

Her survival also provides a small possibility of hope.

If her adaptation can someday be understood without repeating the cruel experiments that created her, lunar water might still become useful to humanity.

The Silent Sea Ending Explained

The ending of The Silent Sea deliberately leaves the future uncertain.

Balhae Station's secrets have finally been exposed to the surviving crew.

They now understand what lunar water really is, what happened during the original disaster and why Luna 073 is so important.

Captain Han sacrifices himself so the others can escape.

Song learns the truth about her sister and the experiments.

And Luna reveals that her mutation allows her to survive conditions no ordinary human could endure.

The final image of Luna walking across the Moon is therefore more than a shocking science-fiction moment.

It represents evolution, survival and uncertainty.

Earth is dying from a lack of water.

Lunar water could save it.

But trying to control that discovery has already caused death, deception and horrific human experimentation.

Luna stands between those two possibilities.

She could become the key to humanity's survival—or proof that humanity has crossed a line it was never meant to cross.

That unresolved tension is what makes the ending of The Silent Sea so fascinating. The greatest discovery in human history may also be its greatest danger, and the answer may lie not inside a laboratory sample, but within Luna 073 herself.
