The whole world splits into two sides whenever a comic book movie hits the theaters and we really can't blame people for it. The rivalry between Marvel and DC dates back to the 1960s when Stan Lee released the Fantastic Four comics. Today, the rivalry is still intact with both these companies releasing epic blockbusters and busting down the box office time and again. However, some movies really just has it all and irrespective of the company behind them, they are appreciated by fans all over the world. Joker is one such masterpiece.

Individual Brilliance Versus A Cinematic Universe

It's a known fact that when it comes to solo movies, DC has led the way with some absolutely fantastic movies like the Batman trilogy and most recently, Joker. Nevertheless, when it comes to establishing a cinematic universe, Marvel is light years ahead. Christopher Nolan's Batman was sheer brilliance. Joker was a masterpiece, featuring a Oscar worthy performance from Joaquin Phoenix and the perfect fitting music by Hildur Guðnadóttir . However when it comes to establishing a universe for the long run, DC has sadly let their fans down. The solo movies had been good, but the disastrous run of Justice League showed that DC wasn't yet ready to handle a long showdown.

Fans claim that the alleged version of Zack Synder's Justice League was a better direction than the one released. Zack left DC before the ultimate re-shoots of the movie were done which is why his cut wasn't released leading to the famous #ReleaseTheSynderCut on social media platforms. Marvel on the other hand focuses more on the long run than individual performance.

Most of the movies contained in the MCU are average so to speak, but as a whole the universe (MCU) has swept people as well the box office away. Avengers Endgame is now the highest grossing movie ever with a box office gross of $2.797 billion. Marvel has been building this universe since 2008 and their hard work has paid off. They make great solo movies too, like Captain America: Winter Soldier and Thor: Ragnarok but their power lies in the links between the movies.

Consistency

Consistency is where Marvel is slightly ahead than DC because of the same reasons again. DC has some beautiful pieces of work but they can't keep up with it. Movies like Joker and Wonder Woman come very rarely from DC. It's like a roller coaster where occasionally DC brings out some wonderful movies from their bag and sometimes they just release average ones. They are responsible for pulling up their standards so high that they fail to keep up with it. While some of their movies are Oscar worthy, others feel like they have been rushed to the theaters.

Marvel has always kept their standard at a height which they can easily achieve, all the while providing their fans with the desired cinematic experience. They focus on the bigger picture which keeps fans yearning for the consequent movies because they need closure. For comic book studios, consistency is a real issue because the brand name itself attracts people to the big screens.

While taking nothing away from the masterpiece, Joker's release shall not be much of a threat to Marvel if they can keep focusing on the bigger picture. You gotta do what you can do best.

Marvel's next release is the Black Widow on May 1, 2020 while DC is set to release Birds of Prey on February 7, 2020. Stay tuned.
