The Outsiders Reboot: Why It Needs to Happen and Who Should Be in It

The Outsiders is one of the greatest books of all time, and it deserves a movie with the right actors to do it justice.

Why It Needs to Happen: One thing everyone can agree on is that The Outsiders is one of the greatest books of all time, and has influenced teenagers everywhere. The movie, however, was one of the worst things I've ever laid eyes on. Yes, there is an all-star cast of future legends in this movie, but it had terrible writing and did not go by the book enough. I feel as if the movie had potential, but not at the time it was made. Modern day, however, is the perfect time for an Outsiders movie, and we have some of the most talented young actors to be in it. Let's take a look now of what the cast could be like...

Liam Hemsworth as Darrel "Darry" Curtis

Darry Curtis is the oldest of the Curtis brothers, and is very muscular and sporty. While Darry is supposed to be 20, a 25 year old Hemsworth could very well pull off the role. He has the perfect build for the character, and I know I would have no problem believing him as the head Greaser of the gang.

Dylan O'Brien as Dallas Winston

This might be controversial to some, but just imagine O'Brien's darker moments from Teen Wolf. We know that Dally is the darkest character in the story, and does some pretty cruel stuff, but I think that O'Brien has enough range to play the character. Usually being happy-go-lucky and borderline geeky, he may seem like a bad candidate, but I'm willing to bet that he would nail role.

Tye Sheridan as Ponyboy Curtis

Ponyboy Curtis, the main character of this story, was given an easy to forget performance by an easy to forget actor. Tye Sheridan could cure this bad memory. He's 18, so a little older than Ponyboy is, but isn't everyone a little older in Hollywood? Not only does he look like how Ponyboy was imagined, but he's a terrific actor, about to make a big step in his career by playing Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse. I believe that this role would be in safe hands with Sheridan.

Asa Butterfield as Johnny Cade

If Asa Butterfield isn't going to be Spider-Man, then we at least deserve him as Johnny Cade. The youngest and most fragile character in the story, Asa could appeal to both the weaker and the stronger sides of Johnny. We see him as a weak and meager character in the story, until he saves Ponyboy's life by killing one of the "Socs " that was trying to drown him. And of course if you've ever read the story (which I'm sure everyone has), you know that he's the most important character in the story, and deserves to be played by an actor as good as Butterfield.

Zac Efron as Sodapop Curtis

Am I the only one that thinks Zac Efron could be the next Rob Lowe? Sodapop is the middle child of the Curtis brothers, and even though Efron is 27, he could pull off the young pretty boy. Although this would only be a supporting role, it would be a supporting role for a movie adaption of one of the best books of all time, and I think Efron would take it despite his current status as a credible movie star (finally).

Nick Robinson as Steve Randal

You may recognize Robinson as the older brother from Jurassic World, and even though he's 20, he was believable as a teenager in that movie already. It doesn't take much to pull off Steve, and a role like this would be perfect to influence Robinson's career even further.

Tyler Posey as Keith "Two-Bit" Matthews

I know, there should be a rule against using two Teen Wolf actors in the same fan cast, but Posey is a really good fit for Two-Bit. I feel like he could pull off the hustler feel perfectly, and anything to get him away from TV roles should be welcomed in his career.

Bella Thorne as Cherry Valance

I really wish I could back up my decision to cast Bella Thorne as Cherry Valance, but in all honesty she's a hot redhead I wouldn't mind seeing more of. She hasn't done a role quite like this one, but the bar isn't set high for any of these characters, and she truly is a great young actress.
