Dear Vocal Readers,

Oh, Netflix, it's a sea full of your average storytelling but every once and awhile it is home to greatness. I found myself searching through the streaming platform tonight only to discover one of those great hidden gems. Comically enough the film The Platform may just be one of this platform's best that it has to offer. This article will not contain any spoilers for the movie as I think everyone should enjoy it and explore it for yourselves. And yes, it's in Spanish, but you can manage to read subtitles every now and then.

While I won't spoil anything I will explain the simplest explanation of it that I can. There's a prison with hundreds of different floors and two people on each floor. These floors are numbered, and with enough luck you would find yourself inhabiting one of the earlier numbers. This is because there is a hole in each floor that has a platform travel through it. This platform carries a whole table of gourmet food. Problem is, this is the only food served to each floor. So, floor one gets their pick of the litter with the food and each floor down must eat the leftovers. You must, obviously (watch the movie and you will get why I said obviously), realize there is a huge issue with this system.

The further the platform goes from floor one the less food it holds and of course due to human desires there is never enough for everyone. The inhabitants of this system know how things work as every month they switch floors. One month you could be on floor 50 and the next be on 124. Thing is, there is enough food for each floor if everyone were to ration their food. But with humanity there comes greed and of course many people stuff their faces with more than enough food for themselves instead of thinking about those below them. Each person is only here for a certain amount of time and are guaranteed to get out free if they survive. So, people become selfish and simply wish to escape and not help anyone else, even if they themselves know what it's like to have no food for a month.

There's also the issue of having a roommate, because of course people would resort to violence if they were starving enough to do it. Those on the lower floors sometimes resort to cannibalism in order to keep their own lives going. They will get a new roommate the next month, but who is to say that roommate won't kill them right away? It's a system of eat or be eaten, and it isn't going to change.

Well, that is until our protagonist comes in. He introduces a change to this wretched system and inspires hope. This is as far as I will go for the story as I really do not wish to spoil it for anyone. But this movie really had me from start to finish and that is a hard thing for a movie to be able to do. Not only was it stunning visually, it also had a mesmerizing and haunting soundtrack. Everything about this movie exudes excellence, and it didn't need a budget of millions of dollars to really impact its audience.

It's message is one we all need in times like these. It's a message of unity, and hope. If we could all work together and understand the struggles of those with less than us we could all coexist peacefully. Of course the world will never be like this because people won't change. We will always be selfish creatures who want the best for ourselves. However, not all of us are like this and these people are the ones who can change the world. It takes one person, one spark, to spark a revolution.

So, I would implore all of you reading this to take about an hour and a half of your life and watch The Platform. It inspired me enough to write an article about it, so what will it inspire out of you my little snail?

Sincerely from my extremely impressed mind,

Kacie
