The Kree Will Return To 'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 5 And That's Bad News For The Team

Marvel fans were introduced to the Kree back in 2015, when actor Lee Pace played Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy. It didn't taken long for the Kree to make the transition over to the small screen, playing a minor role in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Now though, we've had confirmation that the Kree will play a major role in #AgentsOfSHIELD Season 5. Surprisingly enough, that's only the latest hint that they'll be important to the future of the wider #MCU.

Here's What We Know

Speaking to ScreenRant about Season 5, Marvel Television boss Jeph Loeb noted:

"We have the Kree to deal with. We can actually mention that and how strong they are and how blue they are. That’s one element. And then we also have aliens."

Fans had already suspected the Kree would be returning to the series. Back in August, Chloe Bennet unwittingly shared an Instagram post featuring a blue-skinned figure in the background. It was clearly an actor in costume as one of the Kree, and Bennet hastily took the video down.

As the years have passed, the Kree have become an essential part of the mythology of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. They've been locked in a millennia-old war with another alien race known as the Skrull, and in prehistoric times the Kree experimented on humans in order to create super-weapons. They created the #Inhumans, a new race of super-powered men and women whose powers were triggered by exposure to the substance known as Terrigen. As we learned in Season 3, the Kree swiftly learned that the Inhumans were too powerful to be controlled. They left the Earth, believing the Inhumans had been wiped out.

We've learned that they were wrong, and left a permanent mark on human culture. The earliest incarnation of #Hydra was a secret society dedicated to bringing the Inhuman named Hive back from the planet Maveth, where he had banished through use of a Kree transportation monolith. Many surviving Inhumans hid among the primitive human culture, and the Inhuman gene spread across the globe. One larger group of Inhumans ultimately colonized a hidden Kree outpost on the Dark Side of the Moon. That outpost is now known as the City of Attilan, and is ruled over by the Inhuman Royal Family.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 is confirmed to head in a fantastic new cosmic direction, and it's no surprise that the Kree will return. Intriguingly, at #NYCC2017 fans were given a glimpse of the first 20 minutes of Episode 1. This revealed that Coulson and his team have been captured by a mysterious group who actually seem to be alien, and have been spirited away from the Earth by use of another Kree monolith. There were even surprising hints that the series has taken the team into the far future, so S.H.I.E.L.D. may well be encountering the future of the Kree race.

But the Kree won't just be important to the future of Marvel Television. The race has been confirmed to play a prominent role in 2019's #CaptainMarvel. We've learned that the film will focus in on the Kree-Skrull War, with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers granted her powers as part of that conflict. Fans are convinced that the Skrull involvement is setup for a future "Secret Invasion" movie, which may well mean that the Kree too will return on the big screen. The success of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has left Marvel confident that the future lies with the cosmic, and we should expect the Kree to play a major part in that story.

So there you have it, Marvel fans. The Kree are set to return in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5, but that's only going to be the beginning. The future is bright for this alien race, increasingly important to the future of the wider MCU.
