You are invited onto the dance floor in the dimly-lit Kingfisher tent at Adelaide Fringe’s Gluttony. The three performers are spread at each of the three stages that surround the floor and then “The Gods The Gods The Gods” begins. Described as “gig theatre” - it’s fast-paced, immersive and intimate. The show encompasses music, vocals and storytelling with spoken word poetry. Twelve tracks/three stories and the overall effect is transcendent. The emotions of the audience are rattled, purged and finally uplifted. “The Gods” indeed makes you feel something. The show covers all the gamuts of human emotion: love, existence, loss, loneliness and self-esteem. Our apathy towards institutional gods is also touched on, as well as the Greek gods of old.

Both Phil and Alex of their UK based company “Wright and Grainger” are also joined by Aussie performer Megan Drury. Phil’s soaring, soulful voice paired with him on electric is sublime. Alex’s master storytelling skills of spoken word are frenetic and have to be seen to be believed, while Megan’s high energy performance on vocals and spoken word exudes undeniable warmth and compassion. The stages are invitingly lit with a sparse neon light design.

The venue allows for an immediacy and intimacy that is intended by the performers. They frequently come down from their stages, interact with each other and sing and dance among the audience members in a friendly fashion that is invigorating. Seeing audience members smiling, laughing, singing, grooving and even slow-dancing is just another element that makes the experience of “The Gods” so memorable. The interaction is encouraged but never intrusive (a massive introvert here) so that you find yourself getting caught up in it regardless.

The musical styles are spoken word poetry (really a kind of rap or slam poetry) of which their style is often likened to UK group “The Streets” according to Phil Grainger in the lyric booklet (which you can purchase after the show). Others styles include pop and electronic.

I first saw “The Gods” in March 2020 for the last day of the Adelaide Fringe. Very shortly after we all went into lockdowns. It was the last great party and I often found myself thinking back to that special experience of “The Gods” many times. Somehow three years have passed and the show is finally back with a slightly modified performance to tour the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It’s heartening and refreshing to have them back in Adelaide to delight and inspire many more newcomers.“The Gods The Gods The Gods” is ultimately uplifting and clocks in at just under 70 minutes (yet you won’t want it to end). The audience loved it. It also has the power to transmute your pain if you are in need of it. Yes, it honours the past, but it’s also about the now, the everyday and ordinary heroes surrounding us. So step up - your time is now!

I’m giving “The Gods The Gods The Gods” ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ out of five
