If you have been eagerly anticipating a return to the sullen world of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, you are in luck. If you've been holding your breath to see #DanielCraig and #RooneyMara in their respective roles with #DavidFincher directing, unfortunately you will have to resume breathing because they are not returning.

Prepare For An All New Everything

#SonyPictures announced that an adaptation of The Girl in the Spider's Web, which is the fourth book of Stieg Larsson's Millennium series and originally written by David Lagercrantz, will release on October 5th, 2018 opposite Warner Bros.' #Aquaman starring #JasonMomoa. The director of last year's surprise #horror hit Don't Breathe, #FedeAlvarez is set to direct the project and production will begin in September.

The film will feature an entirely new cast including a recast of the titular Lisbeth Salandar, the role in which Mara starred and earned her first #AcademyAward nomination for performing.

The Girl in the Spider's Web was written by Lagercrantz following Larsson's death in 2004 and follows super-hacker Salander and investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (originally portrayed by Craig) as they find themselves at the center of a tangled web of spies, cyber-criminals and corrupt governments.

Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch made the announcement Monday at the London Book Fair and expressed his adoration for Salandar and the series:

“In all of contemporary literature, Lisbeth Salander is completely sui generis — probably one of the greatest female literary characters of all time in my view... Modern punk defiance personified, she is unforgettable in every incarnation, truly one of the most compelling characters we’ve seen in recent years. David Lagercrantz’s brilliant work in continuing this remarkable series honors Stieg Larsson’s masterpiece.

He praised Alvarez for his direction and referred to him as the "perfect choice" for helming the adaptation:

We at Sony are so honored to be part of this series with Yellowbird, and we’re so excited to be making an original film of The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Fede Alvarez is the perfect choice to direct. Fede is an amazing director with a unique vision of the world. In particular, his talent and skill in creating psychological intensity will bring Lisbeth Salander back into popular movie culture with a roar.”

Alvarez made a statement on joining the project and seems eager to find the next Salandar:

“I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity. Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part — finding our Lisbeth.”

Announcement Confirms We Will Not See A Fincher Sequel To His 2011 Film

Fincher's adaptation of the first book in the Millennium series grossed $233 million worldwide, but was deemed too expensive for a hard-R film due to its $90 million budget. The studio had options on Craig for two sequels, but the actor was said to want a pay raise, making his return impossible given the studio's mandate to make Spider's Web at a much lower cost.

Fans of the Fincher film have been eagerly anticipating a sequel/adaptation of The Girl Who Played With Fire directed by him and starring Craig and Mara for years. News of his potential sequel surfaced as recently as a few months ago.

Audiences have seen what Alvarez can accomplish with the horror genre in Don't Breathe and hopefully that translates on-screen when we return to the world of Lisbeth Salandar... If anything, we'll always have the Swedish Trilogy starring #NoomiRapace to satisfy our Dragon Tattoo trilogy cravings.
