The Genius of Spider-Man: No Way Home

One world, three universes

Like many of it’s franchise predecessors, Spider-Man: No Way Home has taken over both the box office and the world of film. For everyone who has seen the film, the reason why is not hard to understand.

The genius of No Way Home is that it does something that no other film brand has ever done before, and that is bringing together three different series of the same character and merging them into one emotionally compelling masterpiece of a film. Movie buffs and Marvel fans were in for a real treat when the ensuing release of Spider-Man: No Way Home was under way in late 2021. Before the debut of the first trailer most Marvel fanatics had already done their homework and were aware that several villains from director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man series would be featured in No Way Home.

Though fans were savvy to presence of villains from the two previous Spider-Man series, the jury was still out on whether or not the two previous Peter Parker actors would be making appearances as well. Many fans were hoping to get some cameos from both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in a multiversal crossover and sure enough that wish would be granted as theaters erupted in excitement when both actors made their crowd rocking appearances in No Way Home.

The three series crossover was massively successful in pulling off the impossible. Though first explored on television with DC comic's Crisis On Infinite Earths, never had the big screen seen a major crossover such as this one. When one thinks about the multiple actors who have portrayed heroes like Batman and Superman, the idea of all them appearing in the same movie together isn’t what usually comes to mind as opposed to the argument of which actor’s performance was better. From Sam Raimi to Marc Webb to the MCU, every depiction of Spider-Man on the big screen has had a positive reception in some form. That positive reception is why so many fans enjoyed the multiversal crossover of the three Spider-Men, they were able to see the melting pot of charismatic personality that all three actors brought to the Spider-Man brand over the past 20 years.

When I was at the theater on the night of No Way Home's first showing, the appearances of all three Spider-Man actors arrival on scene evoked a reaction that was one for the books. Watching Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield come through portals from their respective universes and into the MCU made the audience jump for joy in a manner that was nearly riotous. Filmmakers were smart about leaving the two actors out of the film's trailers, even though fans speculated on both actors making an appearance, so the filmmakers were very smart in executing their introductions the way they did.

The biggest display of genius in No Way Home is how it manages to redeem the negative reception that all three Spider-Man series have received as well. From the overwhelming abundance of villains in Spider-Man 3, to the underwhelming execution of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, to the belief that MCU Spider-Man lives too much in the shadows of the mentoring Iron Man, every attribute of all three Spider-Man series' have not always been warmly received. No Way Home does a great job at bringing these three arcs together, addressing their elephants in the room, and making good on the mistakes of the past. Overall Spider-Man: No Way Home is pure genius because it breaks new ground by revisiting and revising old ground for a new day. With the upcoming release of Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, I think it's safe to say we can expect more exploration of this genius coming soon in the MCU.
