The Future of the Amazing Spiderman

The return of Andrew Garfield

With the success of the newest Spiderman installment, the internet has been asking for a new Andrew Garfield Spiderman movie. Now I am in the camp of no, and that makes no sense and it's unnecessary mostly because Sony has already proven that they can’t make a good Spidey movie by themselves, however if, in theory, we were to get another Andrew movie there are a couple of storylines that would be interesting and not interfere with the current cannon of the MCU.

Andrew’s Spidey mentioned that after his Gwen died he stopped “pulling his punches” and that he got really angry and dark. Now we have all seen Peter be the friendly neighborhood Spiderman, but I think seeing dark and grieving spidey would be an interesting twist to the character and a necessary depiction to make him more relatable instead of just rehashing the same old stories. An edgier Spiderman would not only put the character in a whole new light but it would allow Andrew to show off his acting chops a bit more, I think that though all the actors that have played Spiderman have brought something to the role the thing Andrew and Toby have struggled with is playing the innocence of Spiderman (could have something to do with the fact that they were in their 30s…) and allowing Andrew to be a bit more open and free would definitely make the character more dynamic and interesting. This would also get away from the audience seeing Spiderman as a kid. Every live action story we’ve seen thus far has been high school/early college Spiderman but the reality is that most of the runs of Spiderman in the comics world he is a grown man and I think getting closer to that world opens up new possibilities for the character.

Comics to draw from:

Back in Black; even not using specific story points, this is a great comic to draw on for a darker Spidermans characterization, it takes place after Aunt May’s death which would actually be a great way to connect both Andrew’s Spiderman and the MCU’s Spiderman.

The Night Gwen Stacy Died; Now obviously a bulk of this comic has already been used on Andrew’s spiderman but what I want them to focus on is the aftermath and characterization

The end credit scenes also concluded that Venom was not from Tom’s Spiderman’s universe, which honestly makes a lot of sense however as someone who has always wanted to see Venom done correctly, meaning in the same universe as Spiderman I'd love to see him interact with Andrew’s Spidey. Sony has attempted this before and failed miserably but now that we have 2 full Venom movies and he is his own fleshed out character the team up might actually work.

Comics to draw from:

Venom; A version of this comic was followed for the Venom movie however without the interaction with Spiderman the movie missed a lot of the original comic material.

I truly don’t think we need another Andrew as Spidey movie, I think his first 2 were aggressively mediocre and outright bad at times, not his fault but the fault of the writing. And though I think he grew into the character when the entire story wasn’t hinging on him, I trust Sony not at all to be able to pull off a full Spiderman movie that isn't bad, another Andrew movie would be heavy, whichever way they went and they would need Marvel’s writers to make it coherent and Andrew would have to tap into the character long enough to make it good.
