Supernatural Ends After 15 Years

After 15 years on the air, the hit CW TV show Supernatural finally came to an end on Nov 19th, 2020. With it, we said goodbye to Sam and Dean Winchester for good.

Supernatural began in 2005 and it has outlasted most TV shows to date. It has seen 3 presidents come and go, the invention of the first iPhone and many other momentous events that are too numerous to mention. Few other shows have this kind of longevity and even fewer in this genre. It is also one of the few shows where they were able to go out on their own terms rather than being cancelled.

The premise, when it began, was simple. Two brothers, raised as hunters of the supernatural, set out to find their missing father, while battling evil along the way. Early episodes had them fighting local urban legends such as Bloody Mary and the Hook Man. As the show progressed, they expanded on the show’s mythology, touching on other cultures, religions and ideas. In their time, they have fought vampires, werewolves, demons, monsters, the devil himself and even God himself!

The brothers have been killed and resurrected multiple times over the years and every big bad of the season has been worse than the last. So how do the writers choose to send Sam and Dean out? With an old school episode, which feels like it could have been lifted from a much earlier season. With all their problems wrapped up in the previous episode, season 15, episode 20, was about saying goodbye and letting go. Whether we wanted to or not.

***Possible spoilers ahead *** Stop reading if you have not watched the final episode yet.

In the end, Dean went out the way he always imagined, leaving Sam to have the life, Dean always wanted for him. It was gut wrenching, sad and a fitting way to say goodbye. Not everyone liked the ending, but given everything we know about them, could it have ended any other way? I would suggest that if you were unhappy with episode 20, there is an alternative, stop watching after episode 19, which offers a different ending where the brothers carry on like they always have. It is rare that a show will give us the opportunity to do this, but I think it is a way to appeal to all fans.

The show will remain popular, continuing to be watched on streaming channels, mostly due to the amazing acting from the lead characters and their generosity and kindness in real life. They have always tried to give back to the fans and supported them where they could. There are hundreds of fan stories available online about their encounters with Jensen and Jared, all positive.

In their time on the show, they have both married and become fathers three times over. Their wives have both had guest appearances in the show and in real life, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are as close as brothers. While they both move on with their acting careers, Jared as the new Walker Texas Ranger and Jensen as Soldier Boy in the upcoming series of The Boys, I suspect they will always be remembered for their roles on Supernatural. The legacy and message they will leave behind is to always keep fighting, that family does not end with blood and of course, driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole.

We have laughed, we have cried, we have had our hearts ripped out by this show, but it will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Carry on our wayward sons…
