Spoiler Warning: This review contains minor plot details about The Devil’s Mouth, but it does not reveal the ending or any major character deaths.

Survival thrillers have a simple job: trap the characters somewhere dangerous, remove every possible escape route and make the audience wonder who will survive. Prime Video’s latest shark thriller, The Devil’s Mouth, follows that familiar formula but places its characters inside a dark and suffocating underwater cave system.

Directed by Jeff Wadlow, the 2026 movie stars Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor and Nico Hiraga. It follows five friends exploring a remote cave system in Thailand before their lives take them in different directions. Their adventurous trip soon becomes a deadly fight for survival when they realize that something is hunting them beneath the water. The movie runs for approximately one hour and 46 minutes and is currently streaming on Prime Video.

If you enjoy survival movies, especially shark attack thrillers, The Devil’s Mouth is definitely worth checking out. It is not a groundbreaking addition to the genre, but it delivers enough suspense, fear and underwater chaos to keep viewers entertained.

A Fun Adventure Turns Into a Nightmare

The story begins with a group of friends travelling together and looking for one final memorable adventure. They decide to enter an underwater cave system where they plan to swim, explore, take photographs and create memories.

Unfortunately, the group becomes too confident and moves deeper into an environment they do not fully understand. What initially feels like an exciting tourist activity quickly turns into a nightmare.

The cave is narrow, dark and almost completely cut off from the outside world. Their phones are useless, there is no network connection and nobody knows that they are in danger. Even finding the correct route back becomes nearly impossible.

The situation becomes far worse when they discover an aggressive bull shark inside the cave system. Unlike most shark species, bull sharks can survive in both salt water and freshwater environments, making the movie’s central threat more believable than it may initially appear.

From that moment, the friends must fight against the shark, the darkness, the limited space and their own growing panic.

The Underwater Atmosphere Is Excellent

The biggest strength of The Devil’s Mouth is its underwater atmosphere.

The cave environment feels genuinely uncomfortable and claustrophobic. The characters are surrounded by darkness, rocky walls and narrow underwater passages. There are moments when it feels as though the audience is trapped inside the cave with them.

The cinematography successfully captures the beauty and danger of the location. Even when the shark is not visible, the movie creates tension by making viewers stare into the dark water and wait for something to appear.

This suspense before the shark attacks is often more frightening than the attacks themselves. The filmmakers understand that what we cannot see can sometimes be more terrifying than what is directly shown.

The shark sequences are also visually impressive. The creature does not constantly look artificial or disconnected from its environment. Its movements inside the confined cave create several intense moments, particularly when the characters have very little room to escape.

Fast Pacing Keeps the Movie Entertaining

Another positive aspect is the pacing.

The movie does not waste too much time before placing its characters in danger. Once the central survival situation begins, the story moves forward quickly. New problems continue to appear, and the characters rarely get enough time to relax.

There are several effective jump scares, violent encounters and sudden shark attacks. Some of these moments can be predicted by viewers who regularly watch survival horror movies. However, a few scenes still manage to create genuine fear.

The movie understands its target audience. It does not attempt to become a complicated psychological drama. Its main purpose is to provide a tense and entertaining shark survival experience, and it mostly succeeds.

Predictable Story and Weak Characters

Unfortunately, The Devil’s Mouth also suffers from familiar genre problems.

The story becomes predictable in several places. Anyone who has watched movies such as 47 Meters Down, The Shallowsor other trapped-underwater thrillers may recognize the structure almost immediately.

The character development is also fairly weak. We learn enough to understand the friendships and conflicts within the group, but most characters never become truly memorable. Their personal issues occasionally add emotional tension, yet the movie could have done much more with them.

Some of the characters also make frustrating decisions. Viewers may find themselves wondering why any sensible person would behave in such a reckless manner during a life-threatening emergency.

Of course, people do not always think logically when they are terrified. Panic can force someone to make terrible decisions. Nevertheless, certain choices appear to exist only because the story needs another dangerous situation.

Is It Suitable for Family Viewing?

Although the movie is available with a Hindi-language option in supported regions, it is not ideal for family viewing.

There is some blood, shark-related violence and disturbing imagery. The movie also contains a few mature moments. Prime Video lists it with a 16+ classification, so it is better suited to older teenagers and adults.

The violence is not extreme throughout the entire movie, but sensitive viewers should still be prepared for bloody injuries and frightening underwater attacks.

Final Verdict

The Devil’s Mouth had the potential to become a truly great survival thriller. Its underwater setting, technical presentation and shark sequences are all impressive. However, the predictable story and underdeveloped characters prevent it from reaching that level.

Even with these weaknesses, it remains an entertaining one-time watch.

Fans of shark movies and claustrophobic survival thrillers will probably enjoy it the most. Viewers who have never watched many movies from this genre may find it especially exciting. Experienced survival-horror fans will recognize many familiar ideas, but the cave setting still provides enough tension to make the experience worthwhile.

It is not the greatest shark movie ever made, but it is fast, visually engaging and suspenseful enough to hold your attention.
