the darkest minds

this is one of my absolute favorite movies. i love dystopian type movies so i thought i should write a review on it on why it is my favorite. i will explain what this movie is about first.

this movies has my most favorite actress playing the lead amanda stenberg. She plays a girl named ruby who has orange-level abilities, which means she’s telepathic, complete with Jedi-like mind control and the ability to erase herself from people’s memories.

a mysterious illness wipes out half the child population; the survivors are a bunch of evolutionarily advanced super-children who are immediately sent to camps or drafted into mutant armies once they are identified by the terrified adults.

Considered too dangerous to live, the government supposedly destroys any child who scores orange or red (fire-breathing destructors). She disguises herself as a green kid until her cover is blown during a test.

A sympathetic doctor played by Mandy Moore helps her escape, but Ruby isn’t sure she can trust her. She runs off with three other escaped children—Liam (Harris Dickinson), Charles or “Chubs” (Skylan Brooks) and Suzume or “Zu” (Miya Cech)—hoping to find a promised land where kids lively safely away from the grown-ups.

as a child Ruby accidentally erases herself from her parents’ memories. she wants to see her parents again but she is afraid they will reject her, as in not remembering her as there daughter because of what she did without meaning to.

each power a child has is on a colored chart going by whos the most dangerous color.

she travels with her companions who each have unique powers.

from least dangerous to the most dangerous colors are listed.

green: genius

blue: telekinesis

yellow: electrokinesis

orange: mind control

red: fire control

liam, also the love interest to ruby, has the power to move things with his mind aka telekinesis. he is in the blue category.

charles aka chubs, has the power of being really smart, he is considered a green category.

Suzume or “Zu” has the power of electrokinesis, controls electricity. she is considered a yellow category.

i absolutely loved this movie yet for some reason there have been bad reviews, as of which i cannot understand why so i doubt there will be a sequal to it since the ending showed there would be more.

so the group decides to travel by foot towards this secret camp specifically meant for hiding kids to keep them safe. they had a hard time finding it and to rely on clues, hints and decoded messages to find out where this camp was. it was set that way so the adults wouldnt be able to find it.

they eventually do find it and it was great at first, even some dancing between ruby and liam went on. sadly things went sideways. clancy gray is the presidents son who was supposedly tortured and experimented on is an orange just like ruby.

it turns out he was the bad guy. he was pretending it was a safe camp all the while keeping in contact with his buddys at the government to round up all the kids and have them do his biddingfor his army.

he had ruby train with him to figure out how she erased her parents memories of her so he can do the same to others.

they were practicing there powers, clancy and ruby, she was showing him what she did to her parents and then the vision changed to him ontop of her trying to kiss her, which she rejected but he tried forcing her so she punches him in the face and runs.

she runs off crying into liams arms and showed him what clancy tried to do to her which he in turn says he wants to kill him but she rejects and tells him just to grab the others and leave. they meet up with zu and chubs who they tell them what the plan is which chubs is happy about which has said he hates this place.

as they leave the tent it turns out clancy had plans to round everyone up into his army and a whole battle between him and ruby starts out which i foundreally cool because they decided to finally show the "reds" aka fire powers.

now the "reds" as they call them, when they came down from the helicopter looked scary because it seemed as if they were experimented on. i cant say for sure thats what happened to them but it sure looked it. never read the book so i cant be sure thats the case.

the reds shot fire all over the place to which liam blocked the trailer with this huge shipping container he moved in front of them his power.

clancy and ruby then fought power against power controlling the people and guards to win. then clancy tried to erase rubies memory saying he turn her into the perfect ruby, his ruby.

she then told him to go to hell and had the pilot from the helicopter crash right ontop of clancy, which just barely missed him but survived.

they run to safety but carrying a severely injured and burnt up chubs. liam then finds and joins them on the ground. liam tries saying they can take him somewhere to get help which he isnt sure would work.

ruby still had the tracker kate aka the doctor who rescued her in the beginning of the movie out of that facility so she pressed it to have them find her since she knew that was the only way chubs was going to get help.

liam did not want to see kate or there camp again because he felt they were trying to train them as an army which he despised but he stayed just for ruby.

ruby woke up in a bed with kate telling them chubs is in critical condition but he should recover. they start arguing about this camp trying to train them as an army but kate disagrees. kates friend rob was a huge jerk to which ruby used her power on him, making him say hes an a-hole and then forced him to leave.

she asked kate to let liam go and she will help and join her in the war. she agreed and in turn as she kissed liam, sadly erased his mind of her completely which you could clearly see it break her heart to do it but she wanted to keep him safe and make him leave.

with his memory gone, he didnt know her at all to which he looked at her and said she had to be like 16 years old, why is she working for the league which is what kate's group calls themselves.

so liam left and ruby walked into a stadium and put some orange powder on her forehead and raised her hand in agreement as the screen panned out to the whole stadium filled with kids of all colors joining together to help.

the end.
