Chapter 6

"Okay, so now that we have a Primordial with us, passage into the Unseen will be harder to control until you get your shit together Dean," Richard says, walking a couple feet away.

"Your aura is everywhere, it's interacting with all the different correspondences around," Richard holds his hand up to his mouth and blows out a green smoke. As the smoke got closer to Dean and Erebus, it changed from a bright green color to a slick black. It kind of looked like the energy that Dean had seen come from the dragon last week, but it was more devoid of all light. The smoke floated over to Erebus, his eyes shining bright gold from behind his shades.

"I am a Primordial and as such I have no obligation to suppress my energy field like you mortals," taking a deep inhale, all the lights on the street start to flicker. On his exhale a howl rang through the shadows, his energy blanketing the stars.

"Woah Erebus, could you dial it back a bit," Dean jolts at the total darkness. "Not sure how many people would appreciate the sky going dark." Erebus condenses his energy into his humanoid form, his image fraying at the sides.

"What did that prove other than you being a righteous asshole?" Richard mutters, his arms across his chest and shivering slightly.

"Okay," Dean intersects, "what am I supposed to do to stop fucking with circumstances?"

The staff's whispers faint, Dean holds his hand out.

"In the time before the light came forth,

In the space where chaos soared,

I reach for my gagi.

The path given to my blood,

Reveal thyself to me."

Dean's hand pressed up on an invisible wall for a moment, my slight press opening a giant gateway. A black water starts to fall out of the hole in front of him, pooling at the ground for a moment. The black ooze slowly started to form a solid, turning from a puddle into a big black book, bound together with gold chains.

He picks up the book and tosses it in his hand, the weight of the book extremely light for the size of it. Flipping through the first few pages, shifting symbols and sigils flow across the pages. The pages' writings completely unknown to me, He knew that this book was something of his past.

"A person's gagi or technique is passed down through a heritage," Richard explains, "while most manifest as a book there are a lot of different heirlooms a magician can have."

Richard looks on with a mixture of disgust and awe, his nose scrunched up. "I got mine from under one of Tapio's roots," he holds a seed in his hand and a flower grows out of it. The flowers petals tightly wound, flower grew in size until it burst, a small green book with dried leaves for paper came out. Richard opened the book to the first page and twisted his fingers in a weird pose.

"Through seed and decay,

The Lord of the Wood is as my kin.

To protect what grows and flows through the woods,

Will you dance with me?

Tapio,

Lord of the Ancient Forest of light and shadows,

Give aid to your kin."

The leaves around began to rustle and swirl around Richard, his eyes focused on a section of trees.

"I'll get us a nature path in order to guide us to the Council of Light." Richard ruffled through his gagi until he came to a page, then closed his eyes and symbols in a radiant green light began to form on the trees in front of him. The woods in front of him began to sway and creek, the trees bending into an arch. As the treetops connected, Richard's magic etching symbols onto the surface of the trees, the forest settled down with his exhale.

Richard starts walking toward the treeline, his nonchalant attitude replaced with an aura of respect. As he walked on the path Dean noticed his image distorted as he walked through the arch. Looking behind him and waving back, he walks into the trees, completely disappearing through the arch.

Dean looks at the now-empty archway Richard walked through, baffled. As soon as he walked under the arch he disappeared. Dean runs up to the treeline, looking at the etchings and markings on the tree. Up close He hears a soft humming, like muted leaves swaying in the wind. His body tingling from the energy coming off from the runes, he looks over to see Erebus not as a human, but as a humanoid shaped galaxy, the sunglasses still on.

"In-between the Seen and Unseen we travel through my domain, the Abyss, " Erebus reaches his hand through the arch, causing green energy to crackle and darken.

He hears a whistle call from somewhere behind the arch, its melody distinct. Richard was somewhere in the forest in front of me, but he couldn't see him at all.

"Are you guys coming or are you going to stand there like a couple of noobs?" Richard's voice echoes, coming from somewhere up in the trees.

Nervous as hell, Dean takes a step through the arch. As his leg goes through the arch it disappears, and with a gulp he steps through the pathway.

As he walks through the archway the world slips from simple shades of green and brown to a scene he's never seen before. In front of him was a massive tree a few yards away, the ground around it filled with flowers of golden petals. Flowers from every part of the world, every deadly and delicate botanic frozen in gold.

Looking down, Dean found he was walking up a pathway that looked made of clear crystal. Where his feet touched the ground the crystal changed to a midnight purple, the path narrow. On either side of me there was an emptiness, nothing in sight except the golden grove ahead.

Walking down the path toward the gold tree Dean caught a glimpse or two of shimmering figures, golden effigies flowing around the tree. Blurry images of people gathering around the tree, sipping ambrosia and breaking bread. The spirits deep in their display of gay abandonment, he stepped into the garden.

The spirits gathered turned from a shimmering gold to a black mass of shadow and smoke, their eyes blazing red and each pair on Dean.

The wraiths lunge at him, fumbling over one another in a frenzy. As they reach him they freeze, their ghastly fingers reaching out to touch. He stand there in awe and fear, watching their tormented and sorrowful figures reach out for me.

"They won't hurt you," Erebus says from behind. "They fell to my realm and as such are mine to command."

Dean reached his hand out to the wraiths as they cower before it, fearing to touch him. He takes a step through the wraiths, a chill flowing through my body. But this cold was nothing compared to Erebus' energy. The wraiths contorted and shifted around him body, clasping to his clothes and wrapping him in a blanket of darkness. As he looks down the shadows blanket his body like a cloth, the words of a protection spell on Erebus' lips.

"The wraiths will protect you while you remain in this realm," Erebus nods and looks around.

"You guys take absolutely forever to get your shit together," They hears Richard's voice from up above.

He looks up to see Richard swinging from the branches of the massive tree, landing in front of them with a light footed grace.

In the In-between he looked so different. His eyes glowing a steady green, in his hair vines and twigs sewed into his hair, his ears sharp and petite. His face long and thin, he held a serene and calming expression. In his hand, he had a branch from the tree above, golden leaves sitting at the tip.

"Way to take over my realm," Richard grumbles and crossing his arms, "I had those wraiths set up to guide the way through the portal."

"I sense you have weaved tremendous magic in this realm," Erebus says, glancing around at the space around.

"Well, duh," Richard twirls his staff around, the leaves at the tip whistling. The giant tree responded, the great tree ruffling its branches and its wood changing form.

A giant door formed on the tree's trunk. Richard walks toward the tree and sets his hand on the door.

"This is one of Tapio's seed," Richard says, looking back at Erebus and Dean. "When I was young, it was my duty to grow and protect this tree with my life, and in exchange it now offers me it's magic and sanctuary."

Erebus floated past him and stood by Richard. Looking first at Richard, he gently placed his hand against the tree.

Richard's eyes flared gold as Erebus touched the tree, Erebus's energy flowing into the tree. Veins of black energy flow through the bark from his hand, Richard frozen in place against the tree.

"Erebus what the fuck," Dean runs over and pull Richards hand off the tree. He flys away from the tree into , dragging Dean to the floor.

Richard's eyes flaring gold and green, shivering and mumbling in a weird trance as he fell against me. The leaves on his hair a polished black now, looking similar to horns as his eyes shut and he went slump.

"Richard, wake up," Dean shakes Richard's body, trying to get a response.

Erebus had gone to fill the tree with his energy, the clashing of black and gold energy splintering and distorting the tree. His eyes ablaze and his aura sizzling the air around him, primitive symbols began to be etched on the surface of the tree. As the tree ached and moaned against the enchantment, Dean looks down and see black veins forming around Richard's eyes.

Dean stand up and run over to Erebus, the air around him freezing. "What are you doing?" Dean yell over the tree's destruction.

Erebus tilts his head in my direction, his eyes blazing gold, flecks of green flowing around his other hand.

"I am getting acquainted with the life force of this realm of the unseen, " Erebus says, black energy billowing from his palm into the tree.

"You are hurting my friend! " Dean say, grabbing his arm, trying to yank his hand from the tree. Not budging, a wide smile crosses Erebus's face.

"He will be fine," Erebus licks his lips, "He will just be under my control now."

Dean looked up at disbelief, backing away from him. Wait, this guy that showed up in his room, blanketing the world in darkness, was really evil? He look from Erebus to Richard, who lay sprawled on the ground. Richard had warned him that he was evil, but he still trusted him.

"Erebus, I command you to stop," Dean rushes at his floating body and collide with his side, his hand finally detaching from the tree.

Erebus flares gold and black, flinging Dean off of him and against the tree. His form became much bigger and stronger, transforming into a black mass of tentacles and horns as he lost control of his form.

Dean looked in horror upon him, his voice bellowing in a language he couldn't understand in his mind. He felt the carnage and death that this creature had brought into the world, his heart filling with dread.

And suddenly Erebus was back to his former self, his form condensing almost too fast to see. He slowly walks up to his, aura completely different. He looked on with concern and fear of Dean's safety.

"I apologize," Erebus says, "I slipped into my more primitive form when you broke the incantation." Erebus reaches his hand out to Dean.

Dean scurryed away from him, the only thing he saw he a monster who killed so many messengers of light. His head tilts to the side as he looks on at his fear.

"What is the matter, master," Erebus says, withdrawing hs hand.

"You...you..." Dean's voice is breaking as he stands up against the tree.

Chapter 7

Richard groans from the ground, his eyes flickering open as he rolls to his side. Looking at Erebus in fear, Dean scurries over to Richard. Leaning over him, he lifts his head into his lap as Richard's eyes open.

"Bro, what just happened?" Richard says weakly.

Dean looks over at Erebus, his small figure floating in front of the doorway in the tree. The tree radiated with malicious energy, the ground around the tree devoid of color.

Looking back down at Richard, he touches one of the black leaves in his hair. Instead of it being a soft leaf, it seemed made of rock, maybe of obsidian origin. His eyes are faintly glowing green, his energy seeping into the ground around him.

"My tree is being used to open a portal to the abysmal plane," Richard mutters softly, looking over at Erebus.

Erebus, meanwhile, placing his hand on the door, called forth names Dean had never heard and phrases older than time. With a push of his hand the door swung open, a space devoid of light laying beyond.

There was a rumble from the tree; the runes burned on the tree, beginning to bleed a black oil-like substance. look down at Richard and see the same stuff coming from his mouth, his eyes losing all light and starting to mutter in a bizarre language again.

Erebus backs away from the door, stepping out of the way as a form starts to come from the door. A long and lean black figure walks out of the doorway, taller than the average man. As his form started to take shape, his face was the first thing to fully form. Blue fire flowed out from where his eyes should have been, his face skeletal and thin. The oily substance is flowing off him to reveal a dark blue suit, oddly enough. His hands long and sharp, he stood tall over Erebus.

His face breaks into a smile wider than his face, bowing deeply in front of Erebus.

"My Lord it has been so long since I've been in the light," he jumps high into the air, and wings of black spring from his back.

"Malik, come down here," Erebus says as another figure crawls out of the doorway. This figure walking on all fours, a creature of horns and black fur ran toward Erebus. Reaching up to pet the huge beast between his horns, Erebus looks over at Dean.

"This is Pyne," Erebus says, the beast's eyes flaming purple.

The door slams shut, the runes on the tree flaring gold as the portal closed.

"Richard is over here dying so you could call some fucking friends," Dean screams, cradling Richard's limp body.

"This was the best conduit to get our companions ready," Erebus says, obviously caring none about Richard's life.

"These are my most civil constructs I crafted while in my abysmal plane," Erebus says with a smirk.

"I thought you said you weren't the bringer of evil or whatever," Dean yells, his head pounding as he sends images of terrifying creatures crafted in the dark into his head.

"I said I wasn't the one who was driving people to insanity," Erebus's smile grows wider just as Malik fly's down to his side, "that's what my constructs are for."

"My last victim was a wise man who had a thing for his grandchild," Malik's high-pitched laugh continued. "I drove him to slaughter his whole family in one night with a whisper here and a whisper there."

Dean looked at Erebus and his friends in horror, wondering what in the hell he had summoned.

"Richard, get up," Erebus says with a wave of his hand. Richard springs off the ground, his energy turning from light green to a dark, almost black-green.

Richard looks at Erebus with deadly intent, his eyes flaring as he tries to fight the bonds set on him.

"My Tree of Light was never meant to open to such atrocious realms," Richard spits black onto the ground.

Dean stands up and picks up Richard's staff, the gold leaves turning a light purple in his hand.

"Erebus why are you summoning these evil things," Dean says, rushing in front of Richard. Dean thought that if Erebus was anything like Tapio he would be kinder, friendly. But the monster he saw in front of him did not seem like a friend.

"Relax master, I would never hurt you," Erebus says tilting his head slightly.

"I think it might be best to lock him in the abysmal plane," Malik says with a grin. "Just to keep him safe," his laugh high pitched.

"No," Erebus says, "he has free reign over his life, but Richard may need some adjustments in my playground."

Richard started walking toward the door, out of his eyes and mouth black liquid flowing. Every step looking forced, he looks over at Dean with fear in his eyes.

"Erebus stop," Dean yells, swinging the staff at him. Pyne moves in the way, biting the stick and snapping it in half.

"Don't worry I won't let him die in there," Erebus says from behind Pyne.

The door swings open again, this time a stairway leading downward appearing.

"Make your descent and don't stop until you reach the bottom," Erebus chuckles.

Dean rushed over to Richard and tried to push and pull him off course, but he continued onward. As he passed through the doorway, couldn't follow. An invisible force stopped me from going with him.

Richard looks back at me, his face smeared with the oily substance, glares at me with a hurting smile.

"I blame you," he says as the door slams behind him.

Chapter 8

Erebus floats into the air, his eyes flaring gold from behind the shades. He floats over to Dean, placing his hand against his chest softly.

"He was just in the way," Erebus says with a smirk, a blast of freezing energy rippling through my body. He falls to his knees in front of him, his touch paralyzing him.

"I can make you stronger, give you every power you could dream of," Erebus says, looking over at Malik.

"He was a lost soul who fell into my realm," he sends images of a weak and battered spirit roaming in the darkness. "I turned his soul into a conduit of darkness, not bound by good or evil," Erebus looks down at Dean's face, his eyes hidden.

"Why are you even doing this?" Dean says through gritted teeth, his hand holding up his face.

"I want to give you the world master," Erebus glances at the broken and shattered tree.

"This realm is only a small part; the druids who locked me away will experience true horror as they watch all their forests tainted with my divine abyss," Erebus growls as he lets go of him.

Dean slumps over to the side, his body tingling as he looks up at him. Erebus floats over to Malik. "Now that we have formed here, let's rebuild what we once ruled," Erebus glances around at the destruction.

Dean looks over at the black book that he summoned, crawling over to it and opening its pages. He was thinking of a way to stop Erebus from destroying everything, the book's symbols coming to a rest. The pages glowing bright purple, Erebus turns around to see the book in my hand.

"I command the Primordial of Darkness, the Lord of the Abysmal plane, to stand before me and heed only my call," Dean yells as his Aura flows into the book's pages.

Erebus floats over and bows before him, the book in his hands the only thing keeping him from flying away.

"Bring Richard back," Dean screams at him, the book flaring.

"Richard has slipped into my realm, and there he will stay," Erebus whispers, his head held low.

"Well, then what the fuck," Dean yells, "how do we get him back?"

Pyne stood in front of Dean, the book's pages flipping until it rested at a picture of him alongside a submission incantation.

Dean felt the space between his eyes throb as he read the incantation.

"The beast born from hatred and fury,

Given breath by the vices of man,

I bind you to the Will of thy master.

The workings of God for all to see,

I grant you the gift of my command,

fierce demon of the abyss."

Pyne screeched out and bowed before him. The forces of the spellbind him and Erebus.

"Master, this tree is connected to the forces of Yggdrasil, and as such, the higher realms know of my presence in this world, " Erebus says with a deep scowl on his face.

"Those foul Nephilim sniffing their aura into this realm is the last thing we want, " Malik declares from above, swooping down and slashes at Dean's left arm. The wraiths leap at Malik, grabbing at his nails. His mind going blank as another blast of raw energy radiates through his body, his head throbbing.

Dean drops the book, the spell on Erebus and Pyne breaking. Pyne rushes over and grabs the book off the floor, running back over to Erebus. Erebus holds the book from Pyne, and Erebus wipes black drool off it.

"Good boy, " Erebus says, his hands wrapped tightly around the book.

Erebus looks from Dean to the tree, both battered and abused. His eyes flare gold from behind the sunglasses, the tree igniting into a shadowy flame. The ground around the tree lost all light; the fire ran up the tree, setting the branches and leaves in a black smokeless flame. The tree crumbled and withered, all the life flowing from the tree.

As all the light was bleeding from the tree, charred and aflame, Dean stared in despair. His best friend had just gone through a tree, and that tree was now in flames. In a matter of hours, he lost his best friend and managed to summon three massive evil forces.

As Dean lays on the ground, he looks around to see the realm that Richard had spent so long building in ruins because of me.

"Time to go," Malik says in a sing-song voice.

"Grab the Master," Erebus says, "we can't let him die in here."

Malik walks over to Dean and hoists him over his shoulder, the pain from his wound causing him to grit his teeth.

Erebus lets out a wave of shadowy energy, swirling in a pool at his feet. Pyne jumps through the portal first, Malik carrying Dean forward.

From behind, Dean hears loud horns, the sound causing Malik to look behind him. He saw a white light shining from above, golden symbols forming an intricate circle. People in brown robes walked through the shimmering light, shimmering into existence.

"Erebus," a female voice bellows from in the crowd.

Erebus twirls around with a wave of his hand. A giant wave of shadows flowed toward the crowd, the ground rumbling and cracking apart.

The wave of darkness reached the crowd but did not touch them. The light pushed against the dark energy, delicate images flowing from the clash of auras. Symbols of gold and black etch and burn on the surrounding area, ancient magic clearly at play.

One person walks out of the crowd, the white aura radiating from them. They bring their hands up to their hoods and pull them back. A woman with hair red as fire and eyes shining silver stood tall in front of the crowd. A wave of light pushes Malik back, but Erebus stands his ground.

"Erebus, " she says again, lifting a hand that held a shiny trinket. Dean's eyes were buzzing from the clash of lights, the auras settling down, smoke flowing from her hand. Her mouth moving too fast to figure out what she was saying, flashes of silver rippled through the mist.

"You do not belong in this realm, " she said, two people from the crowd coming forward. The silver smoke slowly wrapping around the people, their forms distorting and contorting. Bones were cracking, and groans of pain from within the fog. Their shape fell on all fours in pain.

Howl's ring through the collapsing realm symbolizes the moon shining brightly above the girl's head.

"Oh, Artemis, " Erebus yells, "I missed your moonlight on my cold flesh."

"I wade through your abysmal realm and have kept your boundaries for centuries. I was the first star in your sky, guarding all from you and your family's destructive forces."

Malik groans and throws me to the side, my body still tingling from the ghoul's magic.

"Master, " Malik says, black talons extending from his fingertips, "let me handle this."

Erebus looks over at Malik and shrugs, floating back a little from Artemis.

Malik cracks his neck, strolling toward Artemis. As the silver fog settled, two white wolves sprang out, snarling at Malik.

With a chuckle, Malik spreads his wings and talons out.

"Your werewolves have been a pain in my abysmal existence for centuries, " Malik springs into the air as the wolves vault at him, grabbing one by the neck as the other latches on to his leg with its jaws.

He was flying high in the air, a mass of fur and wings in the air, Malik slashing and stabbing at the wolf in his grasp. Blood and hair fly everywhere, Malik twirling in the air; he kicks the wolf latched on to his leg, sending it right off the edge of the realm. A loud whimper is heard from the space below, the mob of monks or whatever ducking.

Dean started to crawl away from Erebus, focusing intently on the woman as her aura flowed silver. Dean looks over at the passage he had taken to get here, seeing it broken and collapsing. If he ran, he might be able to get back to my house before the pathway closed.

Malik came swooping down, slamming the wolf at Artemis's feet. As she looked down at the hound, her eyes flare silver, and she tightly wound hair falling from its bindings.

"The Children of the Night have kept you from these realms for millennia, " Artemis glares at Malik, her aura flaring off of her.

One of the monks comes from behind her holding a silver spear, holding it out to Artemis. She grabs the spear and spins it in her hands, pointing it at Malik.

"You will not leave this realm unscathed, " Artemis yells and lunges, slashing the spear at Malik's chest.

Malik flies out of the way, his wings colliding with the next strike. Artemis pressed forward, a silver flurry of mayhem slashing at Malik.

Malik's wings batting away the onslaught, an aura of dark blue started to flow from his fingertips.

"Without Apollo, you have no chance of defeating me in my physical form," He weaves his hands into intricate symbols, jumping several feet back from Artemis. Slamming his hands on the ground, dark blue energy cracking and rippling through the ground below him.

The already crumbling ground below wholly broke in half, Artemis jumping back, her monks grabbing her from the broken ledge.

Dean ran toward the portal he came through, not looking back as he flew through the archway. Dean falls out onto the sidewalk, looking back in time to see the archway's sigils flare brightly green and then disappear.

Dean looked down at himself, his clothes covered in dirt and ash. The metal case still on his back, alone he walked back to his house, his mother in the kitchen as he ran past her up the stairs. Simultaneously, having just lost his best friend and had a connection to the Lord of Evil. He had no idea about what was outside, full of danger and horrors. And apparently, he had summoned the worst horror of all.

Dean shoved the metal case under his bed and once again tried to forget what happened.
