[Movie Review] The Manchurian Candidate ~ Original Versus Remake: Which is Better?
What is more fun than watching a great old movie? Watching the movie remake back-to-back for contrast and comparison. One of my favorite, most enjoyable pastimes is re-watching an old movie (from back in my day - the 60s and 70s), viewing an updated version of the movie, and then debating with others for hours about which version is the best.

Nobody 2: Family Vacation Turns Deadly
### The Blood-Soaked Plot Four years after the events of the first film, **Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk)** remains a government assassin ("Nobody"), working to pay off a $30 million debt incurred from destroying a Russian bank. This relentless work strains his marriage to **Becca (Connie Nielsen)** and distances him from his children, **Brady (Gage Munroe)** and **Sammy (Paisley Cadorath)**. Seeking reconciliation, Hutch takes the family (including his father **David, played by Christopher Lloyd**) to Plummerville’s Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark – a place of cherished childhood memories . Hutch promises Becca a violence-free vacation. However, trouble erupts when an arcade employee slaps Sammy. Hutch retaliates brutally, drawing the wrath of corrupt theme park owner **Wyatt Martin (John Ortiz)** and the town’s vicious Sheriff **Abel (Colin Hanks)**. Abel, acting for crime boss **Lendina (Sharon Stone)**, orders Hutch’s elimination. This sparks a brutal conflict: * Hutch loses a pinky finger in a boat attack by Abel’s men . * He discovers Plummerville is a bootlegging hub controlled by Lendina, with Wyatt forced into cooperation . * When Lendina kidnaps Wyatt’s son Max (the boy who provoked Brady), Hutch rescues him, burning Wyatt’s final payment and scarring Abel . * The climax is a massive, explosive showdown at the theme park. Hutch, Becca, David, brother **Harry (RZA)**, and Wyatt battle Lendina’s forces. Key moments include Becca tranquilizing Lendina, David triggering a park-obliterating explosion, and Abel’s death . * The film ends with the Mansell family watching vacation footage, now accompanied by two rescued dogs . ### Returning & New Cast * **Bob Odenkirk** as Hutch Mansell: The lethal yet family-focused assassin . * **Connie Nielsen** as Becca Mansell: Hutch’s wife, who steps in to save him . * **Christopher Lloyd** as David Mansell: Hutch’s retired FBI agent father . * **RZA** as Harry Mansell: Hutch’s adoptive brother . * **Sharon Stone** as Lendina: The ruthless crime lord controlling Plummerville . * **John Ortiz** as Wyatt Martin: A theme park owner forced into crime . * **Colin Hanks** as Abel: Lendina’s corrupt sheriff enforcer . ### Behind the Scenes * **Director:** Timo Tjahjanto (replacing Ilya Naishuller), known for brutal action films (*The Night Comes For Us*). This marks his English-language debut . * **Writers:** Derek Kolstad (creator of *John Wick*/*Nobody*) and Aaron Rabin, with story contributions from Bob Odenkirk and Umair Aleem . * **Producers:** 87North (David Leitch & Kelly McCormick) and Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment . * **Production Timeline:** Officially greenlit in late 2022, filmed in 2023/2024, completed post-production by April 2025 . ### Violence & Content Breakdown * **Extreme Action:** Elevator brawls, katana decapitations, buzz-saw murders, water slide impalements, and explosive dismemberments (including a ball-pit explosion scattering limbs). Hutch’s pinky amputation and self-cauterization are graphically shown . * **Language:** Heavy profanity, including 40+ F-words and blasphemous uses of Jesus’ name . * **Themes:** Family loyalty and protection drive Hutch’s actions, though his methods are extreme. David Mansell’s line, "Believe it or not, you guys are an improvement on me," hints at generational growth amid violence . ### Reception * **Critical Response:** 82% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, praising Odenkirk’s performance and "diverting" action. Consensus notes it "measures up admirably to the original" . * **Audience Score:** 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, slightly higher than the first film’s 94% . * **Criticisms:** Underdeveloped villains (especially Lendina), superficial world-building, and underused supporting cast (Lloyd, Stone) . * **Praise:** Odenkirk’s charismatic lead performance, creative fight choreography, and effective dark humor . **Where to Watch:** In theaters now. A digital/DVD release is expected by October 2025 . **Verdict:** *Nobody 2* delivers relentless, inventive violence and Odenkirk’s compelling everyman hero, making it a worthy sequel for action fans. However, its thin villain backstories and extreme gore limit broader appeal. If the franchise continues, deeper character exploration is needed alongside its signature chaos .
