SDCC Recap
Of course, San Diego Comic Con was the most amazing nerd experience. After about 10 years of my father and I trying desperately to get tickets, and failing, I finally got to go as press with Intermyth and Temple of Geek. I was also able to get my father a pass and made both of our nerd dreams come true. The weekend was packed and when the schedule was released I had a very difficult time deciding what we were actually going to go to.

Reviewing VC Andrews' Dawn (Part 3: "Twilight's Child")
The preview for Part 3 of VC Andrews' Dawn had me quite intrigued, and this was coming after a Part 2 that ended with such a bang. The ultimate tease was that Dawn would find herself tormented by the very monsters who plagued her immensely, to the point where she would become the very thing that she had been haunted by. Reminds me of Harvey Dent's line in The Dark Knight: "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." Speaking of movies, it's nice to see the word "Twilight" in the title of a movie that's actually good and not annoying as hell. But I digress.

The history of Yin and Yang : BARBENHEIMER wasn't the first.
In a surprising twist of cinematic fate, July 21, 2023, witnessed the release of two polar opposite movies that seemingly come from entirely different universes. On one hand, "Oppenheimer" delves deep into the life of the enigmatic physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, exploring the moral complexities and scientific brilliance that shaped his legacy. On the other hand, "Barbie" takes us on a whimsical journey into the world of the iconic fashion doll, filled with colorful adventures and life lessons. As these two seemingly disparate films hit the big screen, movie enthusiasts find themselves pondering the intriguing question: what prompted this unprecedented clash of genres and themes?

Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer releases this weekend and I thought it prudent to do some background on the real person. Historical fiction walks a fine line in Hollywood, it is either very well adapted and humanized so it feels closer and more personal to the audience, or it is a bastardization of actual events and doesn’t even resemble the real thing. Normally the good adaptations add a love story (Titanic, Pearl Harbor) and keep all historical details the same. Now Nolan strikes me as a director that does his research and so the historical accuracy of this film doesn’t necessarily concern me, especially considering that there are 32 pages of production notes. So here we go, how much effort and research went into the Hollywoodized version of Oppenheimer?

Secret Invasion
Secret Invasion has been a wildly boring disappointment thus far and as the series begins to come to a close there seems to be little to no hope for a turnaround. The penultimate episode is consistent, and therefore leaves little to praise. But here we go with the second to last episode of Secret Invasion.

Barbie Movie: Cast, Trailer, Release Date & Everything You Should Know
Over 60 years after the original Barbie was introduced in 1959. The first significant live-action Barbie film is almost here, and anticipation for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s cinematic ode to one of the most iconic toys ever is tremendous. Since the creation and success of the doll, Barbie’s intellectual property (IP) has become quite well-known.

Living in a Fantasia
A confession here: I have only completed my third day volunteering with the Montreal Fantasia Film Festival. I had promised myself to write more than the daily entry in my private journal. This was for many reasons: 1) I had never volunteered to help with a festival before, and I could think of no other way to get involved with one beyond travelling to Toronto, New York, or parts of Europe for such an event; 2) my summer was winding down and I could not bear to just plan a new course with my own calendar and outline from a new textbook (always more to learn); 3) there was not much else to distract me, besides online teaching and the distraction of my cellphone; and 4) I wanted to know what was going on behind the scenes. So…
