As a long time cosplayer, I have found it extremely aggravating when people want to cause trouble and drama at conventions. I have seen way too much of it and quite frankly, I am sick of it. My friends and I are in the agreement that these conventions should be our escape from reality.

Greetings, Vocal readers. The month of February has arrived and it's not only Black History Month, but it's also a month celebrating cosplayers of color. Since 2020 is a leap year, black cosplayers have an extra day in the month of February to share their cosplays to everyone on social media. A year ago, I wrote an article about the hashtag #28daysofblackcosplay and asked a few cosplayers what it meant to be a cosplayer of color. I took part in that hashtag and posted my own cosplay pics. In case you're unfamiliar with that hashtag, it was started by a woman named Chaka Cumberbatch, also known as Princess Mentality Cosplay. It's basically when black cosplayers share a pic of their cosplay each day to their followers. At the time I wrote that article around this time in 2019, #28daysofblackcosplay had over 25,000 posts on Instagram. As of this article, #29daysofblackcosplay has over 1,000 posts on Instagram. Representation matters, because I believe that we don't get a lot of recognition and props for our cosplays. While you may have a bunch of positive comments on your cosplay, there are others who want to tear you down and make racist comments. If you're a black cosplayer, you've probably heard comments like these from others such as the following:

2019 has been full of great con adventures and moments for me. Now that we’re almost a couple of weeks into the new year, I have some new cosplays I’m excited to debut. In this article, I want to show some love and appreciation to all cosplayers in Arkansas. I believe in giving people credit and props for their cosplays, regardless of the number of followers they have on social media and whether or not they’ve made their costumes or bought them. I’ll be mentioning some cosplayers by name who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in people’s lives. I’m not saying that our cosplay community is better than anyone else’s, but at least we’re passionate about what we love to do.

1970s-1980s. I used to attend New York “Star Trek” and comic conventions either by myself, or with a friend or relative. I dared not purchase a “Trek” uniform, as I saw how a classmate was mercilessly teased for wearing his to class and I was loathe to share his fate.

Greetings, Vocal readers. This article is for all the Spider-Man fans out there. On this day a year ago, the most amazing thing happened to me that it almost didn’t become a reality. I’m talking about one of my cosplays: Captain Spidey. On November 21, 2018, I got my very first Spider-Man suit from Zentaizone, which sells different kinds of suits, including Spider-Man suits. It took me a while to customize my suit and choose my measurements, such as the size of my waist, feet, and arms. Luckily, I got the hang of it and ordered it. I had to wait a few weeks for my suit to arrive. On the day it was supposed to arrive to me, there was a problem. It was sent to my old address as opposed to my new address. So I had to go to the leasing office of my old apartment complex and pick up my package. I opened my package and when I tell you, my eyes lit up. I couldn’t believe that I now owned a Spider-Man suit. I posted pics of it on my social media pages and did a live stream, receiving positive feedback.

Are your Spidey senses tingling? Good, because this article is about our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man. I recently asked people to submit their photos to me on Facebook, showing off their favorite suits. They were amazing and I can't wait to show them to everyone. I'm more of a DC fan, but I do respect Marvel fans and I watch more Marvel movies than I do DC. The first Marvel cosplay I debuted last year was The Human Spider from the 2002 film, Spider-Man. I attended a Halloween festival in my area two weeks later, wearing that same outfit. Then the day before my birthday, a loss that crushed Marvel fans everywhere: the death of Stan Lee. Finally, I received something amazing: my first Spider-Man suit. It arrived in the mail before Thanksgiving and when I first tried it on, I was giddy and couldn't wait to show it off to my friends. So I posted pics and videos on social media and received positive feedback. Over two weeks later, I went to see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and yes, I did see that movie in my Captain Spider-Man suit. I've now had my suit for almost a year and have been going to cons and other events in it since. I do plan on buying another suit soon, most likely, Miles Morales. I didn't know that there were around 40 different kinds of Spider-Man suits before today.
