S.W.A.T. Ending Explained: How Jim Street Stops Alex Montel’s $100 Million Escape
A dangerous international criminal offers a fortune for his freedom, turning a routine prisoner transfer into an all-out war across Los Angeles.

Spoiler Warning: This article reveals the complete story and ending of S.W.A.T.
S.W.A.T. is an action-packed police thriller about loyalty, redemption and the dangerous power of greed. The story follows Officer Jim Street, a talented but disgraced police officer who receives a second opportunity to prove that he deserves a place in an elite S.W.A.T. unit.
However, his comeback mission becomes much more dangerous than anyone expects when an international criminal publicly offers $100 million to whoever can free him from police custody.
Jim Street Is Removed From the S.W.A.T. Unit
The movie begins inside a jewellery store in Los Angeles, where heavily armed robbers have taken several innocent people hostage. Police surround the building and attempt to negotiate with the criminals, but the situation becomes increasingly dangerous.
Jim Street and his partner Brian Gamble are members of the S.W.A.T. team waiting outside. They are ordered not to enter until their commander gives permission. However, after hearing the scream of a female hostage, Street and Gamble believe that waiting any longer could cost someone their life.
They enter the building without authorization and attack the robbers. Their quick actions save the hostages, but the operation was conducted against direct orders.
Although innocent lives were protected, Street and Gamble are punished for disobeying their commander. Both officers are removed from the S.W.A.T. unit and reassigned to ordinary police duties.
Gamble refuses to accept the decision and angrily leaves the police force. Street is equally disappointed, but instead of quitting, he continues working. He hopes that one day he will earn another opportunity to wear the S.W.A.T. uniform.
Hondo Creates a New Team
Street’s chance arrives when experienced officer Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson is asked to create a new S.W.A.T. team.
Hondo begins searching for officers who possess more than physical strength. He wants people who can remain calm under pressure, make intelligent decisions and protect their teammates during dangerous operations.
Knowing that Street is talented and courageous, Hondo offers him another chance. Street accepts and joins a group of candidates competing for a position on the new team.
The candidates are tested through difficult shooting exercises, tactical simulations and hostage-rescue scenarios. Street demonstrates that he has learned from his previous mistakes. He does not simply react emotionally; he thinks carefully before making decisions.
Hondo selects Street for the new squad, giving him the redemption opportunity he has been waiting for.
Alex Montel Offers $100 Million for His Freedom
The team’s first major mission involves Alex Montel, a wealthy and extremely dangerous international criminal.
After police discover that Montel is in Los Angeles, several units are sent to arrest him. He initially attempts to escape in his luxury vehicle, but the police eventually surround him. With no safe route available, Montel is forced to surrender.
Montel is taken to court under heavy security. Reporters gather outside the building, hoping to capture a photograph or statement from the famous criminal.
As officers escort him past the cameras, Montel suddenly announces that he will pay $100 million to anyone who can free him from police custody.
His message is broadcast across the city. Criminal gangs, mercenaries and corrupt individuals immediately become interested in the reward. What should have been a controlled prisoner transfer is transformed into one of the most dangerous police operations in Los Angeles.
Hondo’s newly formed S.W.A.T. team is assigned to transport Montel to a high-security federal prison.
Los Angeles Becomes a Battlefield
The police prepare a heavily protected convoy. Roads are cleared, armed officers surround the prisoner and Montel is placed inside an armoured vehicle.
Montel remains strangely confident. He believes the enormous reward will motivate someone to rescue him before he reaches prison.
His confidence appears justified when armed attackers ambush the convoy. Bullets strike the police vehicles from multiple directions as criminals attempt to reach Montel.
Hondo and his team immediately take defensive positions. Despite the chaos, their main objective remains unchanged: Montel must not escape.
The S.W.A.T. officers successfully repel the first attack, killing or forcing the attackers to retreat. However, Hondo understands that the assault is only the beginning. As long as Montel remains outside prison, more criminals will continue trying to claim the reward.
The team changes routes and develops new transportation plans, but the attackers repeatedly discover their location. Every bridge, street and temporary hiding place becomes another potential battlefield.
Montel attempts to weaken the officers psychologically. He tells them that criminals from across the city are willing to die for the money and that the police will never deliver him safely.
Hondo refuses to respond. Street also remains focused, refusing to allow Montel’s words to distract him from the mission.
Brian Gamble Returns as the Final Enemy
The most shocking twist arrives near the end of the movie.
Jim Street’s former partner Brian Gamble returns. However, he is no longer a police officer or Street’s trusted friend. Gamble has become one of the people trying to collect Montel’s $100 million reward.
Gamble approaches Street and suggests that they work together. He wants Street to betray the S.W.A.T. team, release Montel and divide the money.
For a moment, Street is forced to confront his past. Gamble was once his closest partner, and both men lost their positions after the jewellery-store operation.
However, their reactions to that punishment were completely different. Street accepted responsibility and worked to rebuild his career. Gamble allowed anger and resentment to control him.
Street immediately rejects Gamble’s offer.
Realizing that Street will not betray his team, Gamble pulls out his weapon. A violent confrontation begins between the former partners.
Their fight is more personal than the previous attacks. Gamble knows Street’s training, instincts and weaknesses, while Street understands how Gamble thinks. Two men who once fought side by side are now trying to defeat each other.
During the confusion, Montel attempts to escape. Hondo and the other officers quickly stop him and return him to custody.
Gamble continues attacking Street, determined to complete his plan. Street eventually gets the advantage and shoots him. Gamble falls to the ground, his betrayal and greed ultimately causing his death.
S.W.A.T. Ending Explained
After Gamble is defeated, Montel has no remaining opportunity to escape.
Hondo and his team surround him and complete the final stage of the transfer. Montel is delivered safely to the high-security prison, where the heavy doors close behind him.
His $100 million offer created chaos throughout Los Angeles, but it failed to destroy the loyalty of the S.W.A.T. team.
The ending represents Jim Street’s complete redemption. At the beginning of the movie, he loses his position because he ignores orders and acts without considering the larger consequences. By the final mission, he has become a disciplined officer who understands teamwork, responsibility and sacrifice.
Street also receives one final test when Gamble offers him a share of the money. Accepting the offer would have allowed Street to become extremely wealthy, but it would also have meant betraying Hondo, his teammates and everything his uniform represented.
By refusing Gamble, Street proves that he deserves his place in the S.W.A.T. unit.
Gamble’s ending provides the opposite lesson. Both men experienced the same professional disappointment, but Gamble chose resentment and greed. Instead of rebuilding his life, he became a criminal and died while attempting to betray his former partner.
Final Thoughts
S.W.A.T. works because its final conflict is not only about transporting a dangerous prisoner. It is also about the choices people make when they are offered money, power or revenge.
Alex Montel believes that everyone has a price. His $100 million reward successfully attracts countless criminals and even corrupts a former police officer. However, Hondo and Street prove him wrong.
The final prison transfer confirms that discipline and loyalty are stronger than Montel’s money. Street completes his journey from a disgraced officer to a dependable member of an elite team, while Gamble’s tragic downfall demonstrates how greed can destroy friendship, honour and ultimately life itself.
