Spoiler Warning: This article reveals the complete story, major twists, and ending of Suspect X.

Some murder mysteries are built around discovering the identity of the killer. Suspect X takes a much more unusual approach. The audience knows who committed the original murder, but the real mystery is how a mathematical genius creates an almost perfect crime to protect the woman he loves.

Released in 2008, Suspect X is a Japanese mystery thriller directed by Hiroshi Nishitani. It follows brilliant physicist Manabu Yukawa as he becomes involved in a battle of intelligence with his former university classmate, Tetsuya Ishigami.

The Murder That Begins Everything

Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced single mother who lives with her daughter, Misato. She works at a small lunch-box shop and tries to live a peaceful life after escaping her abusive former husband, Shinji Togashi.

Unfortunately, Togashi refuses to leave them alone.

One night, he enters Yasuko’s apartment without permission and begins threatening her. The situation becomes even more disturbing when he behaves inappropriately toward Misato. When Misato fights back, Togashi attacks her.

Desperate to protect her daughter, Yasuko grabs an electrical cord and wraps it around Togashi’s neck. Misato helps her hold him down, and within moments, Togashi dies.

The killing was not planned. Yasuko and Misato acted out of fear and self-defence, but they immediately understand that the police may not believe their story.

Their neighbour, Tetsuya Ishigami, hears the struggle from his apartment. Ishigami is a lonely but exceptionally gifted mathematics teacher who quietly loves Yasuko. After discovering what happened, he offers to help them hide the crime.

This decision changes all of their lives.

A Body Is Discovered

A few days later, police discover the badly damaged body of a man near a park.

The victim has been strangled. His face has been crushed, his fingerprints have been burned away, and his clothes have been destroyed. A stolen bicycle is also found nearby.

Evidence recovered from a hotel room leads investigators to believe that the dead man is Togashi. Since Yasuko is his former wife, she immediately becomes one of the main suspects.

However, Yasuko has a seemingly perfect alibi.

On the estimated night of the murder, she and Misato were watching a movie. The cinema tickets are genuine, restaurant employees remember seeing them, and one of Misato’s friends confirms their presence at the theatre.

The police believe Yasuko may be involved, but they cannot explain how she could have committed the murder while being seen in public.

Yukawa Meets His Greatest Opponent

Detective Kaoru Utsumi asks physicist Manabu Yukawa for help with the investigation.

Yukawa begins noticing that several pieces of evidence appear almost too convenient. For example, fingerprints on the stolen bicycle supposedly prove that Togashi rode it to the murder site.

But Yukawa asks an important question: Why would a killer carefully destroy the victim’s fingerprints and face, yet forget to remove fingerprints from the bicycle?

His conclusion is disturbing.

The fingerprints were not accidentally left behind. They were deliberately placed there so the police would discover them.

The bicycle is not evidence left by a careless murderer. It is part of a trap designed to control the direction of the investigation.

When Yukawa learns that Yasuko’s neighbour is Ishigami, his former university classmate, the case becomes personal. Yukawa remembers Ishigami as one of the most brilliant mathematical minds he has ever encountered.

He soon suspects that Yasuko killed Togashi and that Ishigami used his intelligence to create her alibi.

Ishigami Confesses

As the police investigation gets closer to the truth, Ishigami suddenly contacts them and confesses to murdering Togashi.

He claims that he killed Togashi because he was obsessed with Yasuko and wanted to protect her. Police search Ishigami’s apartment and discover a cable, knife and burner apparently connected to the crime.

Ishigami even provides threatening letters and photographs that make him look like a jealous stalker. Yasuko follows his instructions and gives one of these letters to the police.

The confession appears to solve everything.

According to Ishigami’s story, he murdered Togashi after becoming jealous of Yasuko’s relationship with another man. The police now believe that Yasuko was only an innocent woman being watched by a dangerous admirer.

However, Yukawa understands that Ishigami’s confession is simply the final part of a much larger plan.

Suspect X’s Biggest Twist Explained

The most important revelation is that Togashi was not murdered on December 2.

Yasuko and Misato killed him on November 30.

Therefore, their movie alibi for December 2 is completely genuine. They never needed to lie about where they were that night because the murder had already happened two days earlier.

After discovering Togashi’s body, Ishigami understood that simply hiding it would not be enough. If police eventually discovered the corpse, physical evidence would connect Yasuko and Misato to the killing.

So Ishigami created an unthinkable solution: he gave the police a different body.

Ishigami selected a homeless man whose disappearance was unlikely to be reported. He persuaded the man to spend time in Togashi’s hotel room, leaving behind his hair and fingerprints.

On December 2, Ishigami took the homeless man to the park and murdered him.

He destroyed the victim’s face and fingerprints so the body could not be visually identified. He then planted Togashi’s belongings and arranged the evidence so investigators would believe the dead man was Togashi.

The police compared evidence from the body, hotel room and bicycle. Because Ishigami had carefully placed everything, they arrived at exactly the conclusion he wanted.

They were not investigating Togashi’s murder.

They were investigating the murder of an unidentified homeless man while mistakenly believing he was Togashi.

That is why the apparent facts never fit together. The detectives were trying to solve the wrong crime.

Why Ishigami Sacrificed Himself

Ishigami’s plan was not merely intended to delay the investigation. He planned to accept responsibility from the beginning.

Before meeting Yasuko and Misato, Ishigami was completely alone and had lost his desire to live. Their arrival in his life gave him hope. Even their small acts of kindness made him feel that his existence had meaning.

His love for Yasuko became so intense that he was willing to destroy his own life to protect her and Misato.

He committed a second murder, manufactured false evidence and eventually confessed, knowing that he could receive the harshest possible punishment.

His devotion is what makes the ending so tragic. Ishigami is both a self-sacrificing protector and a murderer who takes an innocent life. His actions cannot be considered purely heroic, no matter how deeply he loved Yasuko.

Why Yasuko Confesses

Yukawa finally tells Yasuko the complete truth about Ishigami’s plan.

Until this moment, she does not fully understand what he has done. She knows he helped hide Togashi’s death, but she does not realise that he murdered another person and offered his own life to create her alibi.

Yasuko is devastated.

When Ishigami is being taken away, she confronts him and asks how she and Misato could ever live happily after learning about his sacrifice. Ishigami, who has controlled his emotions throughout the story, finally breaks down and cries.

Yasuko eventually confesses her role in Togashi’s death. Her decision destroys Ishigami’s perfect solution, but it also prevents her from building a new life upon the deaths of two innocent people.

According to the supplied story, Yasuko receives a prison sentence, while Ishigami faces a death sentence after the police recover Togashi’s remains.

Final Verdict

Suspect X is more than a traditional murder mystery. It is an emotional battle between logic and love.

Ishigami creates a mathematically perfect deception, but he fails to calculate human emotion. His plan accounts for police procedures, forensic evidence, timelines and witness statements. What it cannot control is Yasuko’s guilt after she discovers the true cost of her freedom.

Yukawa solves the mystery because he understands Ishigami’s intelligence. Yasuko destroys the plan because she finally understands Ishigami’s heart.

That is the cruel brilliance of Suspect X: the perfect crime is not defeated by stronger evidence—it is defeated by the one emotion Ishigami was trying to protect.
